Cozy 8 X 15 North Oakland cottage. Just several steps away in the main house are your private full bathroom with sink, toilet, shower, fresh towels, and a lovely, large shared eat-in kitchen. There is complimentary tea and coffee for you in the kitchen. The cottage has a mounted flat screen tv, a very comfortable queen sized bed, internet and cable (December 2013 - installed a new router in the cottage, guests report the wireless connectivity is more than adequate), plenty of books and New Yorker magazines if you feel like reading, a comfy leather chair, and a full sized dresser for your clothes. Enjoy the sunny, plant filled backyard deck just outside your front door. There is a private entrance alongside the main house that leads back to the cottage.
If you like community gardens, the lovely one acre Dover Street Park is just around the corner. You can also walk the few blocks to Temescal shopping, excellent restaurants and cafes, art spaces, public library, post office, etc.
We do offer instant booking, but please contact us prior to arriving.
Guests have access to their cottage, their own private full bathroom in the main house, a shared kitchen and laundry room.
Whatever seems natural. Sometimes quite a lot, other times not nearly as much. This is often dictated by how much our guests are even here at the house. They generally spend a great deal of time enjoying the Bay Area.
We are working most days, very easy to get along with, enjoy meeting new people, but also happy to respect our guest's privacy.
Easy access to everything in the Bay Area, great neighbors, excellent restaurants, coffee houses nearby. Easy to walk, bicycle and enjoy our usually great weather.
Parking is easy on our tree-lined residential street, and we're within walking distance of 3 BART stations (MacArthur, Ashby, and Rockridge), multiple bus lines (18, 12, 1R, and 1) into Berkeley, downtown Oakland, San Francisco, etc. The transbay bus line (F) takes 20 minutes to arrive in San Francisco from the stop 3 blocks from our house. This line runs every 30 minutes from about 5 am to 12 pm. It's easy to get anywhere, whether you have a car or not.
Clean, quite, and very affordable. You do have to go to the main house to the bathroom right through the kitchen, but the place is well worth the money and the host's were very sweet and accommodating.
Chris and Barbara are very gracious hosts and the cottage is a truly lovely retreat.
It was quiet, cozy, clean and safe.
The neighborhood is perfectly situated to all the great neighborhoods. Ashby, Telegraph, Antigues on Adeline etc.
I needed to work during my stay and the Actual Cafe on San Pablo was a perfect breakfast/hangout and work spot. Piedmont Ave, also just a short drive away with a great movie theatre.
Would definitely stay with Chris and Barbara again and highly recommend the Private Backyard Cottage :)
The cottage is in a safe & quiet neighborhood, with convenient access to public transportation and proximate highways. Things are exactly as described and depicted in the photos and description. Chris and Barbara are friendly and laid-back hosts, and their two dogs and cat are adorable! Truly an excellent outpost for exploring the Bay Area.
We loved our stay! The room was exactly as pictured and very clean. Chris and Barbara (and their pets, Ace, Rudy, and Smokey) made us feel at home and respected our privacy. The bathroom was only a few steps away and not an issue. We would happily stay again. Not pictured is a gorgeous lemon tree!
Peaceful, quiet, and pretty space.
Chris and Barbara are very nice! I will see them again!
A Peaceful and comfortable sleep in the garden cottage to the sound of wind chimes.. Barbara and Chris's place is a quiet backyard sanctuary in Oakland.
We especially liked the well stocked bookshelf, and would have liked more time to work our way through it in the sunlit garden.
The location is convenient, the kitchen and private bathroom (in the house) are great, and Barbara and Chris were helpful and friendly. Their cottage is so reasonably priced and is a lovely spot to land - especially because of their gorgeous cat and friendly dogs.
This was our first airbnb experience, but it won't be our last! The host description was very accurate. The backyard cottage was cozy and quiet and very private. It was exactly what we wanted. We appreciated the separate and secure entrance since we had late night musical events to attend, and were able to come and go without disturbing our very gracious host. The location was perfect for our needs. We were within easy walking distance of my daughter's place and to public transportation into San Francisco, which we enjoyed. Our encounters with Chris and Barbara were brief but very pleasant. We look forward to getting to getting to know them better when we are in town again to visit my daughter. Our only regret was not signing up for a longer stay. When we inquired about extending it, we found out it was already spoken for. All of the communications we had during the process of booking and staying were prompt and clear. Our Amtrak train came in very late in the evening. Our host were able to accommodate our late arrival, and helped us to feel welcome. Linda and Jim
Chris and Barbara are friendly and welcoming hosts. The little backyard cottage is private and aesthetic. It was easy to get from the cottage to the private bath inside the house. The location was safe and centrally located between Oakland and Berkeley. Chris was very quick to respond to our reservation request and pre-visit questions. The cottage was very reasonably priced.
The word that kept coming to mind was "thoughtful". The incredible library of books in the cottage-- thoughtful! (I could have just holed up and read the entire time.) The delightful grapefruit scented soap in the bathroom-- thoughtful! The shampoo selection-- thoughtful! Lovely experience all the way around. Having the bathroom in the main house was no big deal. Chris & Barbara are so welcoming and, well, thoughtful. (And their pets are terrific! Rude-y the beagle BAROOOOOOOOOOO BAROOOOOOO! Ace the adorable white puffball puppy of love and joy. Anonymous kitty who owned me just as she owns the neighborhood. Bliss!)
Great location. Convenient to everything in Oakland / Berkeley. I rented a car & parking was okay-- but the ability to drive to things was definitely appreciated.
Very nice two weeks at the cottage. Our schedule had us leaving early in the AM and returning late at night (catching the F bus across the Bay bridge into San Francisco to see our son and his family), so we saw very little of Chris and Barbara, but very much enjoyed talking with them when we managed to catch them. The neighborhood is lovely, and we enjoyed our walk to the bus stop each morning and evening. Great hosts, very pleasant place to stay.
