About this listing
Our historic, art-filled home is close to the UW campus and hospital, but is located in a quiet and pretty neighborhood. We'd love to comfortably accommodate you throughout our whole home.
Our house is pretty, cozy, bright and clean. We're on the desirable near-west side in quiet College Park, at the foot of historic University Heights, right on the bus line to downtown (about 7 mins.). Built in 1936, we have three bedrooms (and a sofa bed) and two bathrooms. In all, we can accommodate six. Our house is beautifully decorated with art and antiques and maintained with lots of attention to detail.
The three bedrooms consist of one king bed; one twin in the office; and one extra-long twin in the third bedroom (all with down comforters). A full-sized sofa sleeper (with an optional feather-bed to make it comfier) in the living room can sleep two.
You may reserve our house for weekends and sometimes longer stays, we'll try to accommodate you! Please check our single-room listing if its only one of you who needs a room. It is available for a nightly rate of up to $79 most any time. If that's the case, we'll set you up and leave you alone!
In the house, you'll find a great wi-fi connection; a flat-screen T.V. in the kitchen and master bedroom (plus VHS/DVD player); iron/ironing board and hair dryer. There is a stereo with iPod hook up in the living room (no T.V. there, for peace and quiet)!
Kids, we have games and books for you! We live one block away from Stevens Park, a recently rebuilt neighborhood playground with basketball hoops. We're a busy family of three who love art, music, travel, and locally sourced food and would be glad to help you find what you're looking for while staying in Madison.
Footnote: the view from the (website hidden) map from the street is not Kendall Ave. Also, Madison Airbnb hosts are now required to pay sales and lodging tax and we are in compliance with the State Health Department's laws.
Enjoy the entire house. The screened-in porch and patio are great for warm summer evening meals. The kitchen has everything within reach. Your organic breakfast will include fresh fruit, English muffins, breakfast beverages, and French-press coffee or tea (unfortunately, State of WI laws prohibit us from offering perishables such as dairy). If you'd like to use the garage, feel free, and laundry is in the basement. Since this is our primary residence when you're not here, please use the empty drawers or luggage and clothes racks provided outside of our closets.
Interaction with Guests
We will definitely connect through Airbnb or email to confirm plans. If you are new to Airbnb a connection over email or the phone is nice. We'd like to know of any special requests to make your stay terrific! When you rent the entire house, we will not be there although we may meet at check in if it works for all of us.
We will help you with your itinerary or restaurant recommendations. You may even want to cook while you're here (we're very close to Whole Foods and other grocery stores).
Our neighborhood is tree-lined and excellent for strolling. It's quiet but near the UW hospital and campus. Madison is also a great place for foodies! Visit one of three near-by farmer's markets on a Saturday morning for amazing cinnamon rolls, fresh goat cheeses and hickory nuts. If you like to run or walk, go to picnic point on Lake Mendota or through the beautiful UW Arboretum's gardens or wooded trails. Frank Lloyd Wright's Unitarian Meeting House is within walking distance for architectural history buffs. Of course, you can always catch some kind of Badger game, too!
We are very close to the UW-Madison hospital (12 minute walk), and a short bike ride, bus ride or 30 minute walk to campus (through a pretty neighborhood). 20 minute walk to Camp Randall to see a UW-Madison football game. We are two short blocks from a major bus route (University Ave.), which can take you to the Kohl Center, the Capitol Square (for the Monona Terrace or Ironman), shopping at Hilldale or at boutiques along Monroe Street or just about anywhere else you want to go. We also live on a designated bike route, Kendall Avenue. Bike to campus or bike paths that take you to the beautiful city trail. You can park in our garage (one car) or on the street. Street parking is limited to 2 hours on weekdays and Saturdays, but we can help you figure it out. From the airport, you can take a short cab ride to our house, about 15 minutes.
Other Things to Note
The Sunday NY Times is delivered to the house, so feel free to enjoy it.
Please no smoking or pets. Treat our house kindly as there are many interesting artworks, rugs and artifacts. We would be grateful if you would remove your shoes upon entering the house. Please be mindful of keeping windows closed when the heat or A/C is on (or turn it off and open the house).
The house was perfect and impeccably clean. Nice and well-decorated rooms with everything we could need, included a perfectly stocked kitchen. The house is located in a great walkable neighborhood, and it is still close to everything. Sam was very welcoming and available. We truly felt at home.
We again had a very nice stay at Samantha and Bruce's house. It is just the right size for our family of 4 and the place is amazingly clean when we arrive. The house is also conveniently located close to the University and events downtown.
Great place to stay. Good location with a nice park for the kids around the corner. Very accommodating hosts. They were easy to communicate with and answered any questions promptly. Parking for a second car was a little more of an issue than I expected though. Overall highly recommended and I would consider going back if I returned to Madison
My husband, toddler son, and I spent an entire week (7 nights) at Sam and Bruce's lovely "Artist's House" while we were in Madison for my high school reunion. From our very first communication with Sam when I inquired about renting her home, we felt like we were taken care of extremely well. She was eager to meet all of our needs, down to providing toys and dishes for our toddler and offering suggestions about water parks where we could take him on a hot day. (I don't think we would have ever found the fabulous Fitchburg "Splash Pad" without her! :) She is incredibly responsive, friendly, and has a high attention to detail -- exactly the qualities I look for in an rental house owner.
The home itself is very welcoming and cozy -- we ate most of our meals on the 3-season porch, and we loved all of Bruce's beautiful prints lining the walls. The location is ideal for someone wishing to explore the best of Madison -- you're only about 10 minutes away from all of the good stuff (State Street, Picnic Point, the Capitol, the UW Union Terrace, Vilas Zoo, Monroe Street, and on and on). It was an especially ideal location for parents with a toddler because the Stevens Park playground is just around the corner.
My parents joined us for the final three nights of our stay, and although it made for close quarters (Mom slept on the twin in the office and Dad slept on the very comfortable pull-out couch in the living room), it was still quite comfortable.
This was our first Airbnb rental (after renting MANY houses on VRBO over the years), and if our experience in the Artist's House is indicative of the quality of Airbnb rentals, we will definitely be back.
Lovely place. Great location. Loved the porch. Sam could not be there in person but was extremely responsive.
Excellent host and beautiful place to stay- easy to get to UW by bus. Loved the side porch!
I cannot remember an AirBbB experience I've enjoyed more. Sam & Bruce were completely flexible about arrival & departure, meeting us after 10pm when we arrived, exhausted, from a long day of travel. They showed us around then left us to collapse into the extremely comfortable beds.
Sam & Bruce's home is cozy and full of gorgeous art. They went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and felt welcome - even chocolates left with our towels! Sam checked in frequently to make sure we had everything we needed. Breakfast in their sunroom was something I could do every day!
The house is in a lovely, quiet, residential neighborhood, but convenient to the university, downtown and shopping. We were able to get about easily by bus and driving. It was nice to be able to head out into the bustle of campus and the city, then come back to their quiet home and watch the goings-on of the neighborhood.
I will be looking for reasons to go back to Madison so I can stay here again!
