  • I was quite ill-prepared and disorganized before leaving Mumbai for my first-ever holiday in Egypt. I had only fixed for a few days of stay and sightseeing with Mohamed. I had no idea what I will do after my time is up in Cairo. But Mohamed came to my rescue. He met me on the first day of my arrival and we hit it off well. I liked him instantly as a person and developed respect and trust in his as a guide. He not only organised tour of Cairo over three days he also made quick arrangements for the rest of my tour to Alexandria, Nile cruise and Desert Safari. He was helpful, decisive, knowledgeable and polite. I found him to be professional and honest and indeed friendly. With Mo you are in safe hands
    Cheers

  • Not only he prepared the place to stay at but he organised my tour to go to pyramids and sphinx with his guide. He knows so much about Egyptian history and the background of the places I visited. He is kind and clever enough to make the trip interesting one.
If I have a chance to go to Egypt, I'd like to ask him again!

  • When I arrived at the property, Mohamed was not there (and I accidentally confused him with the person at the desk), but he had taken care of everything for me, and I had a nice temporary (I had requested an early check-in because my plane landed from Bangkok in the early morning) triple room, which I could eventually keep for my two nights. To "compensate" for his absence, he invited me to an Egyptian dinner (a "koshery" mix of noodles, lentils tomatoes and spices) in a nearby restaurant patronised by Egyptians. I thoroughly enjoyed it (I do not know if I enjoyed more the dinner, the place, or Mohamed's company...)

  • The Tonsy Hotel is located just off Midan Doqqi, from which it's just a short walk to Zamalek or downtown. My room was a clean but tiny twin (I was by myself, so could put my suitcase & clothes on the bed, but there's no way two people would have been comfortable). The bed was very comfortable, the satellite tv worked, but the fridge didn't. Tiny window overlooking the exposed shaft of the lift. Breakfast was basic - boiled eggs, jam, fuul, bread (some days a bit stale), nescafe/tea - but adequate. The hotel itself was very quiet, which suited me fine.

Staff were friendly but slightly bumbling. For example, one time they relentlessly called me to tell me my cab had arrived. But two problems: (i) I hadn't ordered a cab; and (ii) it was 4 in the morning. They also kept forgetting to tell me when the lift was broken, so I had to traipse up 4 flights of stairs only to come back down again and use the lift next door. But otherwise they were very nice.

From the ad, I had originally assumed that Mohamed was the hotel manager, but from what I can tell he's a tour guide who uses this accommodation. If you're just looking for somewhere to stay, without offers of tours, it's probably better to reserve your room directly with Hotel Tonsy. `If you're looking for somewhere clean & decent (albeit no frills) for a budget price, this isn't a bad option.

    Response from Mohamed:

    - the room he had was sgl room and its has 2 beds but we do have other rooms for dbl and trbl and its bigger size.
-the called he received was by mistake and we apologized for that .
-daniel was never offered any tours as we offer it to CST upon request so i don"t know why he mention this !!!
-iam a tour guide but i have a partnership with this hotel so i don"t understand why he makes himself busy with that !!!

  • I stayed here for a week. The hotel is quiet, clean and hassle-free, which counts for a lot in Cairo. The guys who run the bar and restaurant upstairs are lovely, and the roof terrace is brilliant with relatively cheap beer and a view across the whole city.

The breakfast is a bit of a horror show, sure, but the place is really very cheap. The location is great, walk left and you are five minutes from local restaurants and an all-important off-license (just after the metro station, on the left hand side of the road). Zamalek (the nice bit) is half an hour walk up the Nile, Tahrir is maybe 20 minutes on foot.

As for Mohammed, I was here on business so couldn't take him up on his offer to see the sites, but he is very friendly and organised and a good host. I will certainly stay here again, and would recommend it to others looking for a cheap, friendly and clean hotel in central Cairo.

  • The hotel was great, unusual layout with ground floor reception, and all the rooms on level 16. All the staff there were really nice and easy to deal with, and the rooftop balcony was ace as well. Mohamed is able to help show people around who don't know Cairo well, so if it is your first time, he is the guy for you.

  • The hostel very well located (just near to Sheraton Hotel close to the Zamalek island and Tahrir square by walking distance) and amazing view from the room to the Nile river. The price include a standard breakfast as well from the sightseeing view terrace with a free and strong WIFI.

Mohamed very helpful and honest host and guide (which is really important in a different type of country) with a strong historical knowledge. You can get a self tailored help/guide and can see with him the standards: the Pyramids, Egypt museum, Coptic district, etc... and you can discover Cairo "secrets" by yourself as well at the afternoon (e.g.. the local food, the local cafes, just watch the life and the people in the streets...)

The value is far the best for this price.
I can warmly recommend this hostel based on my experience and based on that I am also operated an airbnb apartment an other country and I can see this from the other side as well.

  • My schedule was changed last minute, but Mohamed was friendly and easy to work with. Hope to stay with him soon
