About This Listing
Private, inexpensive, and in an extraordinary setting and location! Cream of the Hudson Valley, and setup especially for guests!
So its a garret, and its above the garage and you have to walk by the gardening tools and up a flight of stairs, but...Its minutes to the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park...Four miles to High Falls and Stone Ridge, the High Falls Food Co-op, restaurants (The Egg's Nest, The Kitchenette, or vegetarian @ The Rosendale Cafe), little shops (check out vintage country furniture and other wares @ "Downtown" in Accord from 12-5 on weekends), antique stores, three fabulous family-run farm stands, and a three season flea market (in High Falls on Sundays from April thru October)...Three minute stroll down to private Rondout Creek access...Two minutes to scrumptious views of the ridge from the lawn...AND its cheap, beautiful, very friendly and private at the same time... Has a mini kitchenette, bath with shower (no tub), and most things you might need! The Garret is about 500 square feet of open living space with WIFI, a king size bed, Moroccan carpet, pickled pine floors, lofted ceiling, AC, warm in winter, big comfy velvet covered couch, just a few pots and pans and utensils, two burner stove (no oven), under the counter fridge, and big wall of windows with view of Minnewaska in winter. All this on 30 acres minutes from hiking/climbing/biking in the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park.
We are located just 90 miles from the George Washington Bridge in NYC. Off exit 18/New Paltz on the New York State thruway, it is a twenty minute scenic drive over the Shawangunk Ridge, just past the famous Mohonk Mountain House and trailheads for the Mohonk Preserve.
Although we do definitely offer one night stays, it is for last minute availability or mid-week stays mostly (Sunday through Thursday). Generally we like a two night minimum stay on the weekend and for some holidays, three nights. Contact us and we would be happy to see what will work!
We have three other rentals which might interest you! On this property but in another building is The West Wing, an 850 square foot apartment for two, no kitchen, but lots of comfort and style. Located just .6 miles down the road, (as seen on the (website hidden) map below as Catherine Harnden House) and across the creek, we rent out two houses, the 1840 Carriage House and the 1840 Greek Revival, both on the same 10 acres.
This is a non-smoking rental.
Pets are allowed with prior consent only, and must be truly people friendly with excellent indoor manners. No jumping on the furniture with muddy paws or territorial marking behavior please! We also ask that dogs not be allowed to run in the garden beds. Please pick up after your dog in the areas immediately around the buildings.
We ask that guests leave dishes washed and things left in a respectful order. No extra cleaning required, just relax!
Swimming in the creek, or wading is at your own risk. At certain times and in certain spots, there can be a surprisingly strong current, even in shallow depths. No other visitors are allowed on the property except those for whom the original reservation was made, without consent directly from the owner.
Please respect the retreat atmosphere of this country rental.
Our stay at the Garret was so lovely. Sterrett was so accommodating and the space was so beautifully decorated with such beautiful energy filling it. The surrounding area was breathtaking and absolutely what we needed for a getaway from the city life. Also the suggestions by Sterrett of what to do and where to eat during our stay was wonderful! We had a perfect stay!
Sterrett is a warm and welcoming host, smooth communication from the beginning. The apt is spacious and filled with light, decorated with great taste. I can't wait to go back to her beautiful home!
The photos of The Garrett don't do it justice. This loft-style apartment space is meticulously and lovingly maintained, and the location is incredible. As soon as we entered, my husband and I felt a sense of complete peace. I was staying here while working (I'm a photographer, and I was covering a wedding), and even in the busy pressure of covering a wedding, we felt a sense of rest and calm while there. Sterrett is incredibly helpful and a warm/welcoming host without being overbearing. We knew there was no microwave in this space, but she was kind enough to lend us a Breville convection oven, which is all we needed to heat some food we brought with us. The bride's family was staying in another of Sterrett's rentals, which was also immaculately kept. From the care and beauty in these spaces, it's clear to me that these rentals serve as an extension of Sterrett's very nurturing spirit. We feel very fortunate to have discovered The Garrett, and will definitely be back for a personal getaway at some point.
Sterrett welcomed us warmly and went through everything we needed to know. The studio is beautiful and comfortable. Reading lights on both sides of the bed. We were visiting family, so didn't spend much time there, but would have loved to. Great star-gazing.
nice and peaceful. Very nice host. clean room, comfy bed and beautiful views.
This was a wonderful end stop on our 10 day swing through the North Country. If we'd known just how beautiful it was, we'd have planned on staying longer. Sterrett was a fantastic host, and the garret was beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean, private and spacious. We can't wait to return.
Sterrett's properties offer the best retreat - a true retreat - in the Hudson Valley! Beautiful, happy, sunshine, peaceful, inspiring, clean, friendly, comfort. Thank you Sterrett!

About the Host, Sterrett
I am first of all a painter but have found myself over the years building and renovating, something I truly enjoy. My husband is a writer and also director of a graduate program in NYC. We made the critical decision years ago to move to the Hudson Valley in order to have the space we needed for our large library, painting studio, and land for a vegetable garden and fruit trees.
