House - Private room · Pje Esmeralda, Cusco, Cusco, Peru

The Space

The house is a classic design 2 bedroom on a residential area in Cusco. It is bright and clean with hardwood floors. It is tastefully furnished and located in a well maintained residential area of Cusco. This is a pet and family friendly area.
This guest bedroom for one is offered for 2 day minimum stays. You'll be enjoying a lovely room on the first floor, which includes a private room. This space is fully furnished with a twin size bed, cotton linens, cotton towels, two nightstands, and a chair. If you rather prefer having a desk/table with chair, please let me know. I will take the big chair out and place a desk/table for you. The room has a facing window with dark curtains for better sleep. In addition, you'll also have access to the rest of the house space--kitchen, bathroom, living room, dining area, and patio.
Your room is small but very comfortable. Intended for young individuals or single traveler. It is for one person only.
The kitchen is vintage style, and it is well equipped with a gas range and aluminum sink. The microwave and fridge are newer. The refrigerator is huge so storing your food should not be a problem. There is no automatic dishwasher.
The living room is large and comfortably furnished.
High speed wireless internet (Wi-Fi) is available throughout the entire place. Utilities are included and respectful use of power is requested (e.g. turn off the lights in your room when you're going to be out).
Houses in Cusco are not steam heated but all rooms have curtains and I provide cotton sheets, two alpaca blankets, a feeder comforter and an extra cotton blanket per bed, for extra warm at night. Temperatures drop at night, but it never gets too cold like in other countries.
The bathroom is right outside facing the bedroom. High pressure hot water shower is available 24/7 in the shower and in the sink. I will always provide towels.

Interaction with Guests

My reviews speak loud and therefore you could have a sense of how comfortable you would be by staying in my house. I am careful at not invading your personal space and privacy and therefore, after our initial informative meeting at check-in time I try to not interfere too much so you could feel at home and comfortable. However I take care of my guests and their comfort and if they need anything I try to help as much as I can within my possibilities. I live in the house, so I am available for whatever you may need.
For those in need of touristic option (including Machu Picchu) I offer a guide and provide help getting everything ready for you. Simply requested it from me, if this is your case, prior or right after your arrival date.
Breakfast is yummy. I provide with an American Breakfast served around 8am, daily (coffee, tea, herbal teas, omelets, local bread, juice made of local fruits), butter and marmalade. I often like to add something different to it and occasionally I like to switch the omelets for a fruit salad with yogurt and honey.
If you need pick up from the airport, let me know. I provide with detailed information with the directions to my house, but often, I received this type of requests. Coming to a foreign city like Cusco could be anxiety provoking to some and therefore I understand if you request that I go to pick you up. Simply provide me with your flight company, arrival time and I will be there. Please note that you will have to pay for taxi going there and coming back from the airport (approximately USD $15).

The Neighborhood

The house is in a cul-de-sac, therefore it is super safe. Not that the neighborhood is not safe, but it feel just extra safer having to access a gate to enter in the street in which my house is located.
My house is not right in the busy touristic center but neither too far, it is just six blocks away (walking distance). If you are like many of my previous guests, living in this part of the city will make you feel more “involved” in real local life than if you were to stay in a crowed youth hostel near Plaza de Armas. As well, there are plenty of places all the same, for tourists who like to drink beers and go to Starbucks for coffee. .
There are two supermarkets half a block away from the house, and plenty of local businesses (pharmacies, bakeries, restaurants).

Getting around

I will provide you with a detailed sheet of directions (in English and Spanish) to get to my place. The airport is only 10 minutes by taxi from my house. The bus station is 8 minutes away by taxi.
A taxi from the airport should cost between 15 to 25 soles, but always inquire around and bargain the price down if possible. Prices vary considerably from person to person.
A taxi from the bus station should cost around 6 soles.
Please note these prices are for up to 2 or 3 people. Larger groups incur in higher prices.

  • Monica is an amazing host and person. She goes beyond what is expected of a host. We had several problems with train tickets to Machu Picchu and she came with us to the station to sort out the problem. She is amazing! The house is super clean and our bed was so comfortable. The breakfast was great, an omelette with bread and fresh fruits smoothies. Monica is so friendly and really makes you feel at home. Thank you so much for incredible stay in Cuzco!

  • I stayed with Monica for 4 weeks while taking spanish classes in Cusco and I really can't say enough wonderful things about my stay. First, from the very first email Monica was extremely responsive. As soon as she learned that i was there to learn spanish and preferred complete immersion our email exchanges and conversations became entirely in spanish. She even helped me with my homework! Monica is knowledgable about the best places to see, things to do, and of course where and what to eat in Cusco - things you would never find in guidebooks. The house itself is situated in a cute little gated neighborhood very close to downtown. There are Cusco municipal police at just about every corner directing traffic and always felt safe, even at night. A big super market is five minutes away and pharmacies just around the corner. Monica prepares a wonderful breakfast every morning - usually an omelette with plenty of bread from the local baker, freshly prepared fruit juice, and tea or coffee. To help you get over any effects of altitude Monica keeps a supply of coca tea on hand. Monica's shower has plenty of hot water, a rarity in Cusco (most Cusqueños think tepid water is warm water). All in all, it was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend staying with Monica in Cusco!

  • My husband stayed with Monica recently and he could not have been more pleased! Monica was an excellent host and very enjoyable company! She was extremely helpful and organized! He really appreciated all the extras such as early morning airport pickup and complete arrangements for his trip to Machu Pichu with a very detailed itinerary! The accommodations, breakfast and location were great! We have no hesitation in recommending Monica as an exceptional host!

  • Monica is a wonderful host and a great person!!! I very much enjoyed staying at her beautiful home. The house and my room was very clean and decortated with a lot of taste! It's in a very quiet area and not far to walk to the center of Cusco. Monica' breakfast was yummy! As my stay at Cusco was rather short (4 days) Monica helped me to get the most out of it. She is absolutely great in organizing things for you!! Valentina, Monica's cat is very charming and people friendly. Thanks for a great time in Cusco!! I can just recommend to stay at Monica's home!!

  • I stayed with Monica for a total of 5 nights and I would certainly recommend her room to other solo travelers! Monica is very warm and genuinely interested in your travels and personal welfare while abroad. Her room is just off the beaten path a bit about 15 minutes walking to the Plaza de Armas. My favorite part about staying with Monica was our conversations over breakfast where I would receive small tid bits about Peruvian life.

The care and thoughtfulness that Monica demonstrated to me made me feel as though I had a family member with me abroad. Upon my initial departure, my overnight bus was canceled to Arequipa and Monica was nice enough to translate for me with the representatives from Cruz del Sur since I had no idea what was happening. She even arranged for me to stay with her neighbor that night since her available room was already reserved. Monica's neighbor also helped me book a day long tour through the Sacred Valley. It was a wonderful tour and I met great people that I ended up traveling with throughout the remainder of my trip in Peru. I can't say enough wonderful things about Monica!

  • You could not ask for a more wonderful host, convenient location, fantastic accomodations, incredibly delicious breakfasts, super friendly resident cat, Valentina, and all in the beautiful city of Cuzco. Monica is warm, kind, artistic, knowledgeable, reasonable, and a generous individual, full of great ideas, recommedations and help, to make your time in Cuzco a memorable one! I feel so grateful to have been able to stay in her lovely, art filled home. As a single woman, traveling alone, I felt safe and supported. I plan on coming back and staying longer. Definitely THE place to stay in Cuzco!

  • Monica was a great host, and offered some good advice on getting around town. The main square is only about a 10 minute walk from her apartment. Taxi to the airport was only S/.6 when catching it off the street next to her apartment.

  • My stay at Monica's place was superb! Besides a very comfortable and clean bed, her demeanor was awesome all around. She was instrumental on helping me get a great tour of Cusco, Sacred Valley of the Incas; and of course Machu Picchu. I got a good taste of the local culture visiting Mercado San Pedro and eating at the places she recommended. I also enjoyed very much the conversation with Monica and Liliana, diversed and interesting topics and many good laughs! Monica, I hope to see you soon. I would like to go back in the next couple of years with my family!
