Other things to note
The building was originally constructed in 1940 as a one-story building to house the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department (Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department [CBVFD] 2016). In 1952, a second story was added to the firehouse, resulting in the building that exists today. A historic photo depicts the building as originally having two truck bays on the east-facing façade that provided access to the fire engines (Coates and Shinn 1999:34). The CBVFD occupied the building until a new fire station was constructed in 1961 (CBVFD 2016). In the 1990s, the building served as the Colonial Beach Police Station.

Colonial Beach began as a small community of fishermen and oystermen who trawled the nearby waters. In 1878, entrepreneur Henry K. Kintz purchased White Point Farm with the intent of developing a river resort and residential subdivision, although it was not until 1882 that the first lots were platted. In 1883, the Colonial Beach Improvement Company was formed with the express purpose of acquiring and selling real estate in the vicinity and to construct hotels, wharves, and places of amusement, to establish a means of transportation on the Potomac River, and “otherwise to carry on a place of summer resort.” Located less than four hours from Washington, D.C. by steamboat, Colonial Beach appealed to urbanites who sought to escape the stifling summer heat.

During the first half of the twentieth century, the Potomac waterfront and adjacent boardwalk were lined with numerous grand hotels, boarding houses, restaurants, and small concession stands. Assorted amusements included a Ferris wheel, rollercoaster, bowling alley, and dance halls. In 1949, Charles County, Maryland, legalized slot machines. Although gambling remained illegal in Virginia, resourceful entrepreneurs built gaming parlors on piers that projected into the Maryland side of the river. The casino era was relatively short-lived, however; in 1958, the Maryland legislature required all gambling operations in the state to be accessible by foot, effectively ending the casino business in Colonial Beach. Located in a “high risk” hurricane zone, at least 38 hurricanes and tropical storms have been recorded at Colonial Beach since 1930.
