Located in the valley close to the Mendenhall Glacier. We keep the house clean and quiet. WIFI is available through out the property and a large flat screen TV with cable is setup in the living room. We are only 5 feet from a beautiful salmon stream.
Better than a Juneau Hotel - one room, double-sized bed, next to bathroom, in a quite home next to a salmon steam in the valley of Juneau, Alaska. The room is clean and comfortable with a shared kitchen and all the housing amenities.
The house comes with a wood burning stove and strawberry patch out front. Lots of space for your car, boat or whatever you might bring along. Lots of hot water for long showers or baths.
We're in a residential neighborhood just minutes away from Mendenhall Glacier and Lake. Shopping centers and airport are also a few minutes' drive away, and there are good biking trails and a bus stop nearby.
The coho salmon jumping about in the neighboring stream outside your window can attract bears sometimes, so be sure to check the area before leaving the house!
For something to do, I am a part time whale watch captain. Check out this site for an idea of what it's like: Whale Watch (website hidden). You are welcome to borrow my bicycle and head to the Mendenhall Glacier if you like, if I am not using it, just let me know and I can give you the code to the lock - if you break it please fix it. It is an amazing trail to the glacier from where we live.
The movie theater is also not far away, less than 2 miles. Safeway and gas stations are 3 miles away as well.
Down town is 7.9 miles away where there is a tram, another movie theater, and tons of shopping and bars. The capitol building is there as well as numerous docks and beautiful boats to look at.
You can find out more about me by checking out my movie which is showing on PBS called Smokin' Fish and we sell copies for $20.
Please consider our warm cozy home when looking for a Juneau hotel. You won't be disappointed.
Guests have access to WIFI and the kitchen and parking along with all the homes amenities. Guests can use the kitchen and often end up cooking for others staying with us which makes a wonderful cozy evening when we have a fire lit.
Interaction with Guests
I have gone hiking, whale watching, and canoeing with guests.
Our neighborhood is quiet and clean. Our neighbors keep an eye out for anything that might go wrong or could. Bears are out and enjoying the salmon. We do our best to keep them at a distance but sometimes it is a great photo opp.
The public bus stop is a 6 minute walk from our house. It is called Capitol Transit. I offer rides occasionally. Once in a while I loan my car out if it works with my schedule.
No smoking inside the house, dogs must be cleaned up after. Don't litter cigarette buts around the home either please. You clean your own dishes and have full use of the home. We have a washer and dryer. Please remove shoes, but not enforced. This is a nice quite clean place is all.
No hard drinking or drugs please. A 6 pack of bear or a bottle of wine is fine, but not much more. Quite time in the house around 9:00 PM as guests and me want a nice quite place to dream about salmon swimming near by.
Bicycles are free to borrow any time if available.
The house is quiet and extremely well situated, in the Mendenhall valley, close to the famous Mendenhall glacier, and is a perfect base to explore Juneau area. We were extremely welcome, and could share several meals with our host, Cory Mann, who was quite pleasant and, thanks to him, we learnt a lot on the area, its history, and the traditions of smoked salmon (so good!). We would like to visit again.
Cory was an attentive and gracious host. The accommodations were modest, but very comfortable. I especially liked the brook running outside my bedroom window. The views of the mountains are terrific. I got a much needed rest. I slept well. Thank you Cory.
Communication before arrival was great. Cory was very prompt and accommodating. In the end this was the WORST experience my wife and I have had traveling abroad. Upon arrival things were not as they seemed. The warnings of home conditions are generous. There were people residing in the home which we were not made aware of. The temperature in the home was typically lower than 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The final straw was when an individual, likely intoxicated, staying in an RV parked next to the house attempted to barge into our private room, while my wife was home alone. Thankfully the bedroom door was locked and our dog was with her. I ran home pulled all of our belongings out and headed to a Juneau Hotel. No compensation for conditions nor early departure was even considered. In the end the Juneau Hotel was a MUCH better option. I fear this experience has ruined our hopes to participate in future airBnB adventures.
Please only consider this if you are a single male comfortable with being extremely flexible with an open door communal living style. Camping in a tent is likely a better option though. Regardless of season.
The house is located in a quiet neighborhood close to a salmon stream but with easy access to the main road. I took public bus there from airport. It's easy with one transit at Nugget Mall. Cory is out of town but he managed to inform me all the necessary info I need to know. The room is just as described. It a very comfortable stay. The next day I actually walk to mendenball glacier. It's a 45 mins walk with nice view.
Overall, the experience was 50/50 positive and negative. The house needs A LOT of upkeep. There are several unsanitary details in the kitchen, the dish rack had a disgusting brown crust developing, which I cleaned the second night since it wasn't going to be cleaned by itself. The hallway to the room I was assigned was dirty and soil was obvious. The bathroom tub had crust developing as well and hairs and soil piling up on the drain. Jake, the tenant was awesome and very helpful and wouldn't put any of this on him as my exchange and supposed contract was with Cory. Cory was not there the entire time of my stay nor did he bother checking in. I would think a B&B host would be more thorough on how his/her property is presented...but at 50 bucks a night, could you really complain? Again, I'm very gracious of Jake going out of his way to take me around town and even cook dinner on my arrival and departure. But this place is booked for all next summer so the host is doing something right or people dont know what they're getting themselves into. Take previous reviews to heart; this host really needs to run a tighter ship.
Cory was very helpful and accommodating. We landed on the ferry late and had to leave the next morning, so we didn't have too much interaction, but he was very helpful through email before we got there. The house is a nice space by a little stream, and close to Mendenhall Glacier. I would definitely stay here again next time I'm in Juneau!

I have been traveling with a movie I made called Smokin' Fish. It is a documentary about me going to fish camp with my family and putting up traditional food It is a great comedy like myself.
I love the outdoors and being on the water.
