A cosy rustic old Icelandic house with wild views of ocean & mountain. Ideal creative retreat and a home from home.
This is a vacation rental with a story. Our characterful home dates from 1902 and has been restored with love and colour by our own hands. It overlooks sea and mountains to the front and a wild valley to the back. We have maintained the character of the house and it has traditional wood panelled walls throughout.
The house is spread over 2 floors. Upstairs: main bedroom (double mattress at floor level with goose feather double duvet) with an opening onto the living room, hallway, toilet, fully equipped kitchen. Downstairs: another double bedroom (real double bed), bathroom/ laundry room (bath, shower, washing machine).
This house is a retreat from the crazy world out there. Beautiful and comfortable but without too many modern trappings.
Bed linens & towels are included.
There is electric heating but also, unusually for Iceland, a wood burning stove for those cosy winter evenings! There is plenty of outdoor parking, even big enough for an RV.
You will have the deepest sleep here. The most common sounds are of birds and the waves breaking.
At 66 degrees north, it is the land of midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter so whatever the season you will find magic here.
Often, the northern lights can be seen dancing from the comfort of our living room.
There is a huge wildflower meadow garden for kids and adults to run around in, and depending upon the time of year and how diligent we have been with gardening, rhubarb, herbs, strawberries and tomatoes to pick. And of course in autumn the hillsides are covered in bilberries, blueberries and crow berries and the woods full of mushrooms.
Please note there is a trapdoor leading to the staircase between floors (the front door is on first floor). We detail safe use of this in our house rules. If you have mobility issues we would recommend that you enquire further with us before booking. There is a back door entry that can be arranged.
Interaction with Guests
We, apparently, are absolutely lovely hosts! We're an English/ Icelandic duo with lots of stories and tips for an unforgettable stay (though we will not be in the house when you stay). We want guests to go away with magic in their hearts. The key is kept in a key safe for ease of check in. Orri or one of his relatives are a phone call away & will take care of any problems. In summer we are around irregularly. We can let you know when you book and will be happy to meet with you to share advice if we are in town.
There is great hiking and biking right out of the door, and the Westfjords in general is one of the most beautiful places on earth to explore, with natural hot springs to boot! Being on the coast there are also many possibilities for fishing, whale watching, sea kayaking and boat trips to nearby islands and the Hornstrandir nature reserve.
The house is located in the hamlet of Hnifsdalur, halfway between the Westfjords capital Isafjordur and the fishing village of Bolungarvik (10min drive to each), both of which have supermarkets, banks, restaurants, swimming pools (&hot tubs & saunas). There is a bus stop right outside the house, with services to both towns. Isafjordur is a 7hr drive or 40min flight from Iceland's capital, Reykjavik. An airport shuttle bus can drop you outside the house.
Other Things to Note
If coming in winter (late Sept - early May) please check road conditions on vegagerdin - dot- is, before making plans to drive up. We cannot refund last minute cancellations because of bad weather. It is part of coming to the Arctic Circle.
We have a cat, who even apparent non cat lovers end up loving. If you are booking a stay of more than 2 nights and wish to have her not present this can be arranged on request.
This is our home. Please treat it with love and respect.
Please absolutely no smoking inside the house, and no pets.
As it is a wooden house we'd prefer you didn't burn candles. If you must, keep them enclosed and do not leave unattended.
Do not overload the wood burner. Keep feeding it a bit at a time, otherwise the pressure might blow the system.
You will find the house clean when you arrive, so please leave it clean when you depart. Our minimal cleaning fees are only for basic cleaning between reservations. If it is found unclean on your departure the security deposit may be withheld.
Whatever the weather, make sure you go outside and explore the wild nature!
A perfect cottage with a stunning location and views of fjords and mountains. Not far from Ísafjörður and all its amenities, but remote and cosy enough to feel at the end of the world.
sarah and orri are perfect hosts, communication couldn't be better! they are really charming, open and supernice, with a lot of interesting storys to tell.
if you want to feel like living in iceland, this cosy and beautiful old house is the perfect place to be, a house with charme and a history and the most beautiful view you can imagine. you won't miss a single thing. i can highly recommend both hosts and cottage for a unforgettable iceland experience. i'm pretty sure to rent this place again!
by the way: the cat is a fantastic host, too! we were happy to had it during our stay, since it was an option. if you like cats you will meet the perfect one
Our stay was all the things I have come to expect of Hnifsdalur, this house and the fjords: magical, nourishing, soul-calming and so big!
Sarah and Orri were everything I know them to be: caring and thoughtful, generous and uplifting. Orri is versed in song, story and all the sights of the landscape; perfect to ease us intruders into the wild North.
My friends who joined me were moved to visit such a rare place peopled by such rare hosts. We were blown away and will surely be back. Now that I have filled my cup with Iceland's Westfjords, I will be mulling for months to come...
Thank you so much to my friends, Sarah and Orri!
A house that you can feel full of love! Orri a very nice and helpful, thanks for providing useful information and advise to us! Highly recommended!
Sarah and Orri helped us to get through a glitch in the airbnb system. When our booking was finally confirmed, everything went great. The given directions were precise and easy to find and the house really has its charme. The interior ist extraordinarily custom and rounded up by original art of the hosts.
We had some really beautiful days in the westfjords.
Sarah and Orri's place is great. Exactly what an AirBnB place should be. Homey, warm, inviting and quirky ( It's even got a sweet trap door!). They've got an amazing view out the front door and were incredibly accommodating (even sending us back some clothing we forgot, thx Orri!). If you're headed to Isafjordur, make sure to check if this place is available.
Orrie is an extremely charming man and it's hard to hold on to any concerns once you meet him. This place is unusual...my daughter called it "hippie", and yes, it does seem so. It grows on you and we were comfortable here. If you like "home-style", different. and bold in decor and taste, you will also enjoy your stay.
