The Space

Our Victorian house is on a quiet, leafy street in one of Toronto's most lively neighbourhoods. Waves of immigrants often land here first, bringing with them energy and creativity, opening the small businesses that help make this a great place to live. Doesn't hurt that more established Canadians have also been flooding the area looking for interesting, old houses at (relatively) cheaper prices... many are artists, writers and film people and/or young people starting families.

Old hotels have been renovated into hip, art-filled spaces. There are fantastic bars and clubs (The Drake, The Gladstone, Parts and Labour, Salvador Darling, etc, etc) and tons of restaurants within a short walk of our house. You can have Mexican at Grand Electric, Nova Scotia comfort food at Hopgood's Foodliner, Italian at Local, and just plain good stuff at The Westerley, The Ace, Chantecler, and dozens of small ethnic restaurants (sushi, rotis, spring rolls, falafel) and laid-back coffee shops.

There's a ton of night-life, and live music, if you want it, and lots of galleries, and second hand and antique shops. Also, local designer clothing at Frock, Shopgirls and Imelda, amazing jewelry at Made You Look, a farmers' market at the park on Mondays, nearby liquor and beer stores... you get the idea.

The space is a bright, self-contained basement apartment with its own entrance. It's well-equipped, comfy and cool. The sofa converts into a really comfortable double bed with a feather mattress that sits on top.

We're animal lovers, so well-behaved dogs are welcome... a five-minute walk up the street will take you to the local dog park, and another fifteen will take you to the long boardwalk along the lake or to High Park, the city's largest (with its largest off-leash area). There a friendly dog and a cat living upstairs with us, but they won't be in your flat!

We're happy to give you the scoop on Parkdale, Roncesvalles Village (aka Parkdale, heh heh) and Toronto in general. There's cheap permit-parking available right on our street. The Queen streetcar is two blocks away, and one block away is the bus to the subway.

We've lived in Parkdale for most of the past thirty years (with a few years overseas) and know pretty well what's what. If you need advice on what to see and what to avoid, we'll give it to you. If you want to be left on your own, you will (website hidden) In case this is important to you... although there's a TV in the apartment along with a DVD player, we don't get TV. But The Film Buff – one of the city's great movie rental shops – is a 10-minute walk away. And, of course, there's WiFi.

  • Our stay in Parkdale was as we expected and more!
Meredith's "pad" was very comfortable (oh, the bed!) with everything one would want.
The transaction was seamless with Meredith and we felt right at home.
We have recommended the place to our daughter as it is so close to our son's apartment.
Thanks Meredith for a great place to stay.

  • Beautiful space in a wonderful neighborhood! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

  • The place was just as described. Very clean and cozy with everything we needed for our stay. Also, it was very private. Meredith was very nice and helpful.

The street is quiet and we did not have any problem to find a place to park. But you need to purchase a parking permit on line before you get there. You can get it for 1 day, 2 days or 1 week. I got the 1 week and it cost $22.00.

There is no subway close by, but there is a bus down the street that will take you to the subway. They will also give you a transfer at the bus, so you don't need to pay again at the subway. I don't know if we were lucky, but with one paying fare ($3.00) per day and with a transfer in hand we went all over Toronto and back to Meredith's place.

I would definitely stay there again and would recommend the place to anyone.

  • Meredith's place was just as it was pictured. It was quiet and well kept. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed exploring the surrounding neighborhoods. The area was quiet and street parking was easy with a temporary guest pass from the city.

  • This is a great place and we enjoyed our stay very much. The basement studio is all we needed and its in a very nice neighborhood too. It's easy to get around, go downtown, to the waterfront or high park. Meredith helped us with Parking permits and made our stay at her place very comfortable! Thanks again

  • The apartment is very clean and convenient. Meredith was not here but she asked if everything was okay. The neighbourhood Parkdale is really nice. There are a lot of nice bars and shops in the area. We had a great stay at Meredith's house.

  • And one more positive review!

  • The apartment was nice and quiet, and pretty close to the center. Parkdale is a nice neighbourhood, with plenty of cool shops and restaurants (and there is a binder that provides helpful recommandations).

  • My boyfriend and I, along with our dog, spent the weekend at Meredith's apartment. The place was impeccably clean when we arrived and was very cozy. We greatly appreciated the breakfast goods that were provided as well as the milk and coffee in the fridge! All the basic necessities were available(bathroom/kitchen stuff) which was nice because it was just one less thing to worry about. I was skeptical about the pull-out couch initially but it turned out to be quite comfortable! The neighborhood is quite but is walking to distance to some pretty great places to eat nearby and public transport close by made getting downtown a piece of cake. Finding long term parking was a little rough, but that seems to be the case everywhere. We had a great stay for our first time in Toronto and would definitely go back!

    Response from Meredith:

Hey Susan. Thanks for the review! Next time, we'll have to get you a temporary parking permit which allows you to park on our street. Sorry, I just assumed you had got one!

Writer of novels and other stuff. Surf Scoter is my summer retreat. I love Nova Scotia! But Toronto's pretty good, too.
