The studio was fine for one night, but at 8 pm when we arrived in Santa Barbara, our host was completely unaware that our booking was for that night (he thought it was the next night?) and the apartment was not ready. We had to wait about an hour while it was cleaned, which was frustrating as we were very tired from a long drive. Apt is also not quite as pictured. Not as bright or clean as it looks in photos.
The apartment was as expected - plenty of space for two of us for the long weekend. It was easy walking distance to downtown, but far enough away so it felt totally safe and quiet. And though it looks like the freeway is close to it on the map, we had zero freeway noise (my husband is the world's lightest sleeper so he would have known if there was even the slightest bit of noise). Easy street parking just around the corner.
let me preface this by saying i've been an airbnb member for years, and i love it. i've always had overwhelmingly positive experiences and have met lovely people, both in the US and internationally.
so, i'll start with the positives: the apt is very centrally located, within easy walking distance of downtown SB and all the main attractions. the studio also has a lovely balcony which was great for coffee in the morning or a drink in the evening, and the king bed is also ridiculously comfortable. oh, and rafael let us use his parking space for the duration of our stay, which came in very handy.
however, a few comments/things to note, in hopes of improvement for future guests:
1) a few reviews specified that the pictures don't accurately reflect the decor, so i'd contacted rafael asking him for more updated photos, which he did not provide. having now stayed there i can see why - the apt is far more cluttered than it appears in the listing, and many of the furnishings seemed old/dusty/mismatched. it also appeared that rafael uses the place as a personal storage facility, with a number of appliances and furniture items just sitting around taking up space.
2) there was a dizzying assortment of left-over food products (both pantry and fridge items), none of which seemed particularly fresh and which rafael made no mention of, so we didn't know if we could/should partake or not. there was an equally dizzying array of left-over, half-full toiletries strewn throughout the bathroom, most of which were old, half-full, super random, etc. all this added to the existing clutter and just general feel of a not-completely-clean, ready-for-guests apt.
3) the bathtub is in bad need of draining. almost immediately upon turning the shower on you were ankle-deep in water. not pleasant.
so overall, the place needs a bit of an overhaul, and for some old furniture/bedding/cosmetics/food to be cleaned out. unfortunately i can't say i would recommend this place to another airbnb member; it just wasn't up to the same level as the other places i've stayed. also i like to be left alone by the host, but this was somewhat exaggerated - rafael literally exchanged 3 words with us upon check-in (and that was only because i couldn't find the key), and that was it. would have been nice to feel a bit more taken care of, frankly.
Cute studio in downtown SB. Stayed with a friend overnight, attended the concert at SB Bowl. Bed was bigger than I thought, and very comfy. Cute little balcony. 90 min street parking starts at 9am...we had two cars so this could have caused an issue if we stayed more than one night, or planned to walk everywhere. Rafael was very nice to deal with. Would stay here again.
Great location, clean and comfortable space. High ceilings, patio terrace a plus. Easy dealing with manager. Recommended!
We had such a great time in Santa Barbara! The studio was just what we needed, walking distance to state street and only a $5 cab ride at night to go out :) the studio was quaint and clean. Would definitely stay there again!
