Hidden Jungle Beach House: where nature lovers can socialize around the kitchen table or enjoy solitude in a quiet spot on a hammock.
You fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake to the chattering of a million tropical birds.
Hidden Jungle Beach House is a typical Caribbean style wooden house with three levels. The kitchen is on the first floor. The bedrooms are on the second. And the third floor is my room, I'm the owner, Lisa, and I live here, too. The first floor kitchen is spacious and open, with jungle all around. The grocery store is only a short jaunt away so you can buy what you need and cook it here. The shared bathroom with a hot shower is on the first floor.
The second floor of Hidden Jungle Beach House has four bedrooms and a living room with cable TV. It also has a shared bathroom with a sink and a toilet. The bedrooms are simple. Three bedrooms have double beds and one has a single. Each room has a place to hang your clothes, shelves, desk or table and chair, mosquito nets and a fan, along with clean sheets and towels.
We are a simple place: The windows have screens but we use mosquito nets, too; no A/C just fans and jungle breezes. We love animals. We have two German shepherds (and a cat) to guard the house and entertain the guests. Smoking cigarettes is allowed only outdoors in the yard.
Hidden Jungle Beach House is truly Puerto Viejo’s hidden treasure. You’ll love it’s relaxed and friendly vibes. You’ll sleep cozy and comfortable in the arms of mother nature. You’ll wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys, cute little geckos and a million different kinds of colorful birds.
Helpful suggestions on where to go and what to do are provided by your delightful host, me! I have lived on Costa Rica’s Caribbean for five years and can give you lots of good advice.

I'm a writer with a website telling you all about my experiences living in Costa Rica for seven years. I'll give you all the details on your options to get here from the airport, along with photos and instructions. I can book your transportation and I also offer personal guide service. Once you have made your reservation, Airbnb will allow me to give you the link to my website.
When you arrive I give a little tour of the place, showing you where everything is. I am happy to give guidance or recommendations and help you find what you need.
Life in the jungle! Our closest neighbors are sloths, often seen in the trees just outside our windows. Stunning Blue Morpho butterflies and colorful hummingbirds flit by as you sit on the patio. The mornings are chirpy and bright with a million melodic bird songs. Afternoons are quiet and peaceful under the cool of the jungle canopy. And the evenings are exotic with the heady fragrance of jasmine, white ginger and ylang ylang and the curious calls of our nocturnal animal friends. This is truly the place to refresh the mind, nurture the soul and release the stress of everyday living.
It is easy to get here. From the airport you can take a bus, a private shuttle, a rental car or you can even take a rafting trip! I'll give you all the details and book your transportation, if you like.
Once you are here you can access most everything on foot or by bike. The public bus system works well and there are taxis at your disposal.
Other Things to Note
IF YOU HAVE A CAR: If you are coming by car, please let me know at the time you make your reservation. Parking is limited so I have to make sure there is space for you. Thanks!
DOGS: We have one cat and two German Shepherd guard dogs. They are very sweet. The dogs do not bite. But they do bark to protect the property from intruders. When you arrive the dogs and cat will greet you as part of the family. Most all of my guests love our pets and the pets love the guests as well.
COUPLES: Our place is small and the four rooms are close together. You will have complete visual/physical privacy but you may not have the audio privacy that some couples prefer. Noise at the level of quiet normal conversation is not heard by others in the next room but our walls are not soundproof.
1. Window shutters and doors must be locked when you leave the premises.
2. Smoking allowed only out in the front yard.
3. Quiet before 9:00 a.m. and after 10:00 p.m.
4. No outside guests allowed without advance reservations. Reservations for having an extra guest in your room must be made in advance. This is solely for security reasons.
Lisa made us feel very welcome in her house. We booked last-minute the night before and she responded first thing in the morning. She was not there herself when we arrived, but made sure a friend was there to check us in and show us around the house. She arrived the first evening of our stay and gave us great suggestions on places to eat and things to do and see. She was very helpful in providing information and advice. The house has a beautiful view and surroundings, it's pretty much in the jungle, and yet only a 5 minute walk from the beach. The only downside to not staying in town is that it may not be very safe to walk back at night and so per Lisa's recommendation we took a taxi back to the house at night. However, the tranquility, beautiful surroundings, and sounds of nature (and the ocean) are worth the ride / walk. Thank you for your hospitality and recommendations, Lisa.
We would definately recommend a stay at Lisa's.
She is a wonderful, interresting and especially a really good writer as well. We found our stay in her hidden jungle house perfect. The rooms are clean and nice and we where met by sloths inthe trees
Lisa is a lovely caring host and is the go to girl to get information on what or where or with who to deal with in the Puerto Viejo area.
Lisa was great! Her and her boyfriend were so nice and welcoming, Christian (her boyfriend) even helped me find a sloth! Lisa is very interesting, I would reccommend asking how she wound up in Costa Rica. Overall great stay, already talking about coming back in December and would stay with Lisa again.
Lisa is very accommodating host. Felicia and I showed up early and everything was ready for us. There are multiple rooms and a house in the front. The house is about two blocks from the center of town. Lisa gave very detailed instructions about where everything was located in the house. She is very personal. After finding out that we were interested in live music she told us all about the local scene. I would definitely recommend the Hidden Jungle Beach House.
Lisa was very helpful and kind during our back and forth emails through airbnb. My friend and I made a mistake on the reservation dates and couldn't change it, but she was kind enough to accept our stay on the right days. Though she was very kind, she has a lot of rules to abide by throughout the stay in her home. Signs are posted around her house, reminding you of what to do and not do, which was a bit strange. As soon as we arrived, she wanted to take us on a little tour throughout the house even though we were exhausted from our travels. When we got back to our room, we wanted to rest, but couldn't because half of our bed and pillows were wet from the rain, because the windows were open. We decided to go out for a bit to let things dry and closed the windows because it was still pouring outside. When we got back, the sheets, pillows, and bed were still wet so we asked if we can change them. She agreed but asked us if it was because we left the windows open, so my friend explained that it was because the windows were open before we got there. Although there was a little annoyance, the house itself is nice and the location is even better.
Michelle have you ever had a bad day? I have them now and then, not too often, fortunately. But the day you arrived was a bit rough. I had lots of work in the house. I had laundry on the line. I had opened the windows in your rooms to make it fresher and more comfortable for your arrival. Then we had a sudden downpour - hard, pummeling Caribbean rain! I ran for the laundry on the line. I ran to close the windows, but I forgot to close yours. Then on top of that I forgot I had left yours open and asked you if you had done it. How embarrassing! Again I apologize.
As for the rules and signs. Often people compliment me on how organized the place is and how helpful the signs are. I wish I could please everyone.
The house tour: I say the same thing to everyone on arrival. "I would like to give you a little tour around the house to show you where everything is. We can do it now or if you need time to get settled in, use the bathroom or whatever that would be fine." All you had to do was say something. I understand that traveling can be tiring and that is exactly why I offer to wait to give the tour.
I am glad you found the house and it's location acceptable. And I hope you never have a bad day.
Our stay at the Hidden Jungle Beach House was great. Lisa was a great help in any need we brought forth, she was quick to answer all my questions. The location is perfect, the town is just a couple minute walk away but the beach is even closer. We even saw a sloth in the backyard! The house was colorful and cozy, and the company was friendly. It was truly a Caribbean getaway.
What a wonderful review, Dani. The idea of a Caribbean getaway is something busy people in cold climates often dream about. I know how meaningful a simple vacation can be and how precious is the time away from one's daily life. And I try to do everything I can to assure some very nice memories from my place. I'm glad you enjoyed your Caribbean getaway!

About the Host, Lisa
I’m Lisa Valencia, a writer and Costa Rica guide who has lived in Costa Rica’s Caribbean since 2007.
I believe in following your dreams and living life to the absolute fullest. I believe in giving without regard to what you get. I try to find the balance between being in the moment and planning for the future. I work on keeping judgment in abeyance. And I am thankful, grateful and appreciative of almost every little thing in every moment of life.
One of my greatest feats, since moving to Costa Rica has been that of learning to reinvent myself. In the past I worked as a mural artist and an interior designer. I’ve continued my art work in Costa Rica, but only to a minor extent. To my own surprise my creativity took a turn to the literary, as I recounted my Costa Rica new life experiences to my friends. In September of 2009, I wrote a book about my first two years in Costa Rica, coming here as a woman alone. My book, “If She Can Do It, So Can I!” is available on my website as an AUDIO BOOK an EBOOK and the paperback version is available from Amazon.
My love for literacy and language sparked another idea. I became certified to teach English as a second language and taught locally for a year. As my writing continued it stimulated more reinvention. Due to readers extensive inquiries about Costa Rica living, I developed a Guide Service and a Consultation Service for those interested in Costa Rica.
Three years ago life brought another new way to share my Costa Rica experiences and to reinvent myself. I am the happy owner of a sweet little guest house in the jungle. Although I carry on my guiding and consultation, my realm of service has extended to providing lodging at Hidden Jungle Beach House. It seems things have come full circle. My book was written to inspire others to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. Now I can help those who dream of travel to Costa Rica by providing guidance and an economical place to start their own adventure.
