The Space

If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of touristy areas, we invite you to stay with us for a taste of rural island life.
You will find us on the eastern, and more lush, side of the Big Island of Hawaii, just 20 miles south of Hilo (between Kea'au and Pahoa in Hawaiian Paradise Park). We are centrally located, an excellent base for visiting the world’s most active volcano, lovely botanical gardens, thermal hot pools, black sand beaches, tropical rainforests, spectacular waterfalls and much, much more. It is just minutes to picturesque lava cliffs perfect for whale watching and turtle sightings, to little known hiking trails, or to the historic village of Pahoa with its quaint shops and choice of ethnic restaurants. Our family, long time residents living on site, will be very happy to point you in exciting directions.
Three comfortable, one bedroom and studio size, family style cottages, a beautiful, forty foot, saline pool...a private regulation tennis court ... a picturesque gazebo..and a mini playground, all on our six acre estate, are available for your family’s use.
NAKUKUI COTTAGE, our lovely studio and perfect for two guests, is set amidst large lawns and graceful palm, near the solar heated pool and tennis court. It has a half sized but fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, cableTV/DVD player, private phone, ceiling fans and a full bath. There is a king sized bed in the single room as well as a sitting area. All linen is provided. The dining area is a private screened lanai. Barbeques are available.
An assortment of breakfast delights including fresh eggs laid by our chickens, an assortment of local fruit as well as an assortment of tea, coffee, or fresh juice will be stocked for your enjoyment.
Children love us and are very welcome (We run a homeschooling program August to May)..... Sorry, pets are not. However, we are happy to share our large assortment of animals with you. Our favorite garbage disposal is our large sulcata tortoise, Nunui.

  • This little studio-cottage sits on a large property with the host's house, a couple of other guest houses, a private home school, and some sheds and barns. The place is great for kids as there are animals on the property: roosters and hens, several sheep, dogs, and cats. My kid played with them for hours leaving me in peace, which was an unexpected bonus. Cindie had a thoughtfully prepared folio with info about the local attractions, places to each, flora and fauna. We got a 10% discount at Kaleo's in Pahua when mentioned we were staying at Cindie's Paradise. There is a very nice pool on the property and a tennis court with the wall. (It could use some upkeep, but unless you are a pro it works fine. The cabin could also use a few upgrades: furniture, carpet, window shades, e.g.) There is so much to do for kids, and feels so peaceful for an adult, that we felt like spending a few hours on the property every morning before venturing out to see places.
This location is great to explore the Puna corner of the Big Island as it is centrally located in this south-east corner of the island.
Cindie and Michael are great hosts. They let us book on a very short notice and probably had to scramble to get the cottage ready for us. At the moments notice she gave us another pan when I asked for one (having not found the one already in the kitchen right before me.) She left papaya, a dozen eggs, coffee, cream cheese and bagels for us in the kitchen. (The latter is a rather tiny kitchenette, well stoked with everything one may need. But the scarce counter space makes it a bit of a joggling challenge to cook there.) The bed is huge, and easily sleeps three. There is a TV with cable, wicker loveseat, and a recliner armchair. The dining space is just before the entrance, enclosed with a bug screen; it's a very nice place to seat.
The cabin has a washer/drier right outside, which we much appreciated and used - after having spend over a week on the island. Not every place has this luxury.
The WiFi was there as advertised but the internet connector was patchy because of the local telecom company experiencing problems.

I highly recommend staying with Cindie and Michael in one of there guest houses. Next time I would try to book an adjacent house, which is more spacious.

  • We just got back from our vacation in Hawaii, and while we only had 3 nights this cottage, they were fantastic! The location is really good and the property was just beautiful. So lush and full of friendly faces - both the oweners and all the animals. The chickens even run up to you to say hi, and if you feed them they will let you pet them - that was fun.
Having fresh eggs, fruit, bagels with toppings, coffee and tea was also a nice added bonus. The cottages themselves and furnishings are a bit dated, but everything is clean and comfortable.
This was a fantastic base for exploring this side of the island and are planning to stay here again when we go back. I have already recommended it to friends, it is a great option!

  • Beautiful grounds plus cute and cozy cottage. It was roomy and I appreciated all the fresh fruit and eggs. I would stay there again. The pool was refreshing.

  • We loved our little cottage in the private 6 acres of Cynthia. Paradise park was a lovely area. Not too far from Hilo, Pahoa, or some great snorkeling and ocean views. My husband and I loved the privacy and quiet in the evenings with the ability to be close to the "hot spots" during the day. The pool was lovely for evening swims since it was dark at about 6:30 pm while we were there.
Cynthia was very friendly and helpful when she was needed but otherwise let us keep to ourselves which was lovely.

  • This was such a fun, hidden gem of a place. The cottage was just the right size for two people. There were a bunch chickens on our porch to hang out with us in the morning. The pool was nice and clean, and not crowded. It was cool to see all of the kids going to school in the mornings.

  • Cyndie was a very kind and thoughtful host. Her instruction and map to the cottage were very clear and detailed. Cyndie also prepared a binder at the cottage full of useful information and recommendations. This was so helpful to us for navigating around the area, as well as the entire island, for sight-seeing, shopping, eating, etc. And the cottage was just perfect for the two of us! It had all the amenities we needed. I especially enjoyed the nicely firm bed, comfortable couches, and the dining table on the porch. The porch was small but cozy, and fully bug-screened. I could just sit there and enjoy the sunlight, breeze, and the sounds of nature all day. Cyndie also has a lot of animal friends at her place - chickens, dogs, a tortoise, and many more! Cyndie kindly offered us the eggs from the free ranged chickens. I had a lot of fun feeding them as well. There are also a tennis court and a saline pool at the site, which are both very well maintained. The location of the cottage is also very good - it is close from Hilo (and the famous waterfalls) and the volcano, and not very far from the Mauna Kea mountain and the beaches on the southern shore (we spotted a lot of sea turtles!). I would definitely go back to Cyndie's estate and recommend the place to all of my family and friends traveling to the big island of Hawaii!

  • Our stay in Paradise with Cyndie and Michael was wonderful! We had a great time. The place is great for kids and fantastic for stargazing! The breakfast basket was such a treat. Everything was exactly what we were looking for. This is precisely why we opted to do Airbnb versus a hotel. Great hosts in a great place! Even our five-year-old expressed disappointment in leaving the cottage where we "lived" for a week. :)

I grew up here in Hawaiian Paradise Park. My dad and I were the first residents, in 1960. Hawaii was a wonderful place to grow up. I raised my own four children here. Today I enjoy running a small alternative elementary school. My husband and I are delighted to share our knowledge of the area with you.
