If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of touristy areas, we invite you to stay with us for a taste of rural island life.
You will find us on the eastern, and more lush, side of the Big Island of Hawaii, just 20 miles south of Hilo (between Kea'au and Pahoa in Hawaiian Paradise Park). We are centrally located, an excellent base for visiting the world’s most active volcano, lovely botanical gardens, thermal hot pools, black sand beaches, tropical rainforests, spectacular waterfalls and much, much more. It is just minutes to picturesque lava cliffs perfect for whale watching and turtle sightings, to little known hiking trails, or to the historic village of Pahoa with its quaint shops and choice of ethnic restaurants. Our family, long time residents living on site, will be very happy to point you in exciting directions.
Three comfortable, one bedroom and studio size, family style cottages, a beautiful, forty foot, saline pool...a private regulation tennis court ... a picturesque gazebo..and a mini playground, all on our six acre estate, are available for your family’s use.
KAHALEKULA COTTAGE, which sleeps up to five guests, is set amidst large lawns, graceful palms and an assortment of fruit trees. It is next to the playground with swings, monkey bars and a half sized basketball court , It has a fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, cableTV/DVD player, private phone, ceiling fans and a full bath. All linen is provided. The dining area is a private lanai. Barbeques are available.
Children love us and are very welcome (We run a homeschooling program August to May)..... Sorry, pets are not. However, we are happy to share our large assortment of animals with you. Our favorite garbage disposal is our large sulcata tortoise, Nunui.
Please leave the cottage neat...wash dishes, strip beds, take away garbage. No animals are allowed inside. If you smoke, please do so outside only. Our property is for registered guests only. Pick any flowers or fruits that you would enjoy.
They provided some welcoming products like eggs, jelly, fruit and bagels etc. which was a special touch. We were able to spend time visiting with them at the end of the day which made us feel very welcome. We would love to bring our grandchildren back knowing they would thoroughly enjoy the grounds, the animals, and the swimming pool.
A very nice location! Because you are in a cottage, away from the other cottages you feel very private. The cottage is a nice place to do some stargazing, because it got really dark at night. It's only about 20 minutes from Hilo. The house was simple but fine! We enjoyed our stay and were very disappointed we had to leave two days earlier because of hurricane Iselle. Things could have been a little bit cleaner. Cynthia and her husband were thoughtful and helped us even late in the evenening when the power went off.
Cyndie and Mike's farm is an experience like no other. Their gracious warmth and the ease of accommodations is singular; I relaxed completely from a stressful mainland life in less than a day. The pool is a dream, the animals charming and friendly, the food Cyndie provides is fantastic, and the proximity to Hilo and Puna is wonderful. We snorkeled in 30-minute-away lava tidepools, visited charming Pahoa (10 minutes away) and made frequent trips to Hilo (20 minutes away). Cyndie provided excellent guidance (who knew toothpaste cures the itch of mosquito bites?) and I would stay here again in a heartbeat. I'll miss terribly the chirruping of Puna birds and the exotic sounds of little tree frogs. This is truly a "get away from it all" place. Believe all the other 5 star reviews: this destination is the real deal.
This cottage in paradise truly captures the spirit of Aloha. We had a fantastic experience here. The cottage was extremely comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. We loved eating breakfast on the lanai, where we'd often be visited by chickens and cats! The location is great too - far enough from the main roads to give a sense of peace and quiet, but nevertheless convenient to all of the great things on the Hilo side of Hawaii. If we come back to the Big Island, we'd definitely want to stay here again!
The estate is very aptly named 'Paradise'!
Waking up to bird songs, and going to sleep with the sounds of the 'night bird'...they are actually tree frogs, but you would never have guessed. Both Cyndie and Mike are warm and helpful. They are also a font of local knowledge. We had a great time! We highly recommend this place!
Thank you Cyndie and Mike for a lovely (website hidden) and CK
Our family of 5 loved this rental. In addition to the full cottage (kitchen, bath & washer/dryer), we enjoyed the pool, tennis court, basketball, swings, fruit trees, animals and exploring the property's beautiful rainforest landscape. The hosts were friendly, wonderful with our kids, helpful, kind, and generous. They even provided us with eggs, fruit, juice, jelly, bagels, cream cheese, butter, coffee, tea, etc. The area is private, quiet (no traffic/neighbor noise) except for birds at nighttime (which we enjoyed). Definitely hope to visit here again!
Well, what can you say.. staying in a place called Paradise pretty much says it all. Cynthia and Mike were very pleasant to talk to and we had a few very nice conversations. It is very quiet at night and that was nice for the three of us. The only reason we can't give the unit 5 stars is the internet connection from the school house did not reach us.. we had to go to the school and use the internet there. This we did twice, and it was not a problem. The unit was very clean and the beds were nice to sleep on. The yard and whole space is very well kept and very pleasing to the eye. LOTs of hard work went into this space and we feel very lucky to have been able to stay there and share in it. RENT a car for those of you traveling here as there really is no better way to see the island and get around. We had a great stay.

I grew up here in Hawaiian Paradise Park. My dad and I were the first residents, in 1960. Hawaii was a wonderful place to grow up. I raised my own four children here.
Today I enjoy running a small alternative elementary school. My husband and I are delighted to share our knowledge of the area with you.
