Enjoy a rural farmhouse in a mediterranean landscape with an Aegean background! Beautiful and serene, away from touristy spots. Our Rural Kea House stands as a remembrance of rural architecture in Kea, 100 years ago. A stone farmhouse, traditionally built and yet modern. A place to come to and relax, enjoy a glass of wine under the stars or contemplating the view.

The space
A special and unique place ! Used as a filmset for the annual Lacta chocolate TV advertisement filmed on location in Kea and in our house, which was specifically selected for its unique atmosphere.
Staying in this house is an experience! A traditionally built stone house, dating from the 19th century, tastefully refurbished and cosy to stay in.
Situated in Ellinika, on the east side of the island at 500m. above sea level, it is within the area of Natura 2000, a Paneuropean network of protected natural habitats in 15 countries (URL HIDDEN)
The house is sheltered from northern winds and has open views to the Aegean from its patio.
In the middle of a valley of acorns, olive trees & farmers' orchards it is a Cycladic landscape with a more “green" feel.

Built around a “stegadi", traditionally a sheltered outdoor space, the house offers comfortable living headquarters for 4 people and can sleep 5: 2 bedrooms, a bathroom with shower and a living room with open kitchen & dishwasher.
No TV or wifi, as it is designed as a "getaway" for those who want to get away from it all. It is quiet, away from the noise of cars and civilization. In fact, you need to walk for 200 meters from the road on a stone path, to get to the house.

Inside, the house features two bedrooms (one double queen size bed and one with two singles, a living/dining room with a wood-burning fireplace, an open, fully- equipped kitchen and a bathroom with a shower. A wood stove in the foyer keeps the house warm in the cooler months and is also wonderful for baking. Skylights let the sunlight stream in.

The house is ideally suited for four guests, but can sleep up to five.

Guest access
The house is built off the road and access is from an ancient footpath almost 200 m. A 7-9 minute walk.
It is suitable for grown up children over 7-8 years old but not for toddlers or babies, as there are steps, unfenced areas, rocky ground etc.
It is a good idea to bring a back pack, instead of suitcases and to prebook a car at the airport, since it will come in handy, in order to get to the supermarket, beaches and points of interest.

Other things to note
If you love walking, this is a perfect home to stay in, as it is on an ancient footpath (No3), which leads to the Ancient Temple of Karthaia. There is a network of ancient footpaths, with signs, which are calm and beautiful, full of oregano, sage and other plants. In any case, bring a good book, your favorite music, and stock up on some locally produced wine and delicacies to enjoy on the patio, in order to take full advantage of your rural paradise. As you retreat into a simpler way of life, your cares will surely melt away.
Also ideal for adventurous children, who love to explore, climb trees & be outdoors in a preserved natural habitat, protected as a Natura 2000.

Neighborhood highlights

The view from the house includes a calm valley of oak trees and olives, with the Aegean Sea in the background. You feel as if you have travelled back in time, to Greece of the 1960's, when civilization had not invaded our lives, farmers used donkeys & carried water from water sources. Near the house, there is an ancient water source, still used for drinking water, as well as traditional washing basins where women brought clothes and kilims to wash.

ON KEA & OUR AREA
Kea is an island of the Aegean archipelago, inhabited since prehistoric times. Approaching it by ferry, there is nothing to impress, apart from the large natural harbor on the left, Vourkari, one of the safest in the Mediterranean and a site of prehistoric findings. One hour ferry ride and less than 2 hrs from Athens airport, it is very close and at the same time very far from civilization.

There is the fashionable Kea and our Kea, the primitive and rural one, a place where you can still “peek” into a long forgotten Greece. If you leave the main port and head to the Central Eastern side, the local farmers use donkeys for carrying water from water springs, they grow tomatoes, zucchini and eggplants, which they sell, as well as high quality thyme honey. There are cows taking a stroll (sometimes on the road), sheep and goats grazing and jumping here and there, like naughty children. You can see sparsely populated villages with stone houses “kathikies”, which blend into the landscape, some populated and others deserted.

Both sandy and pebbly beaches circle the island and one can always find peaceful waters, regardless of the wind’s direction (Sykamia, Spathi, Koundouros, Kalydonychi, Xyla etc.) Some have trees or caves offering shade, while others offer sunbeds or a seaside taverna.

For the hiker and lover of wild nature, the area of East & Southeast Kea is included in the European NATURA 2000 network, as a place of supreme environmental significance. Within this area, there are Vallonea oaks, herbs and rare indigenous plants, such as mandrakes and hemlock. One will be walking among the oak trees, wild orchids, buttercups, lichens, irises, wild roses, hyacinths, wild gladioli and wild mushrooms which grow in abundance in the most fertile inland areas, especially in spring and fall. Small animals like ferrets and hares, often appear in the open and birds such as hawks and eagles can be seen in the sky. Even the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus Monachus nests by Kea’s more inaccessible shores.

The island has a wide network of walking trails, ideal for nature lovers and hikers.

This is what you will discover if you go off the beaten track and stay at our house, located in Ellinika, centrally and south east at 500 m above sea level. You will never be hot, as the climate is always cool up there and the stone walls keep the heat out.

Lives in Athens, Greece
I live in Athens Greece and I really love my city! I am married and have a son. My job takes most of my time, but I love it, although I wish I had more time for my family (close and extended), as well as for the mediterranean way of life. I would not trade living in Greece for all the riches of the world! For me, Greece is a sunny place where history created miracles in ancient times, a place where people love life & the moment, a place of friendship & warm feelings & joy! In my free time, I love to drink coffee or cook for friends, have long discussions on dreams, politics and life. I also enjoy spending time with my husband decorating, cooking & drinking wine. Finally, I love travelling and my favourite cities include London, Istanbul, Paris, Vienna & Berlin. If I had a motto, it would be "enjoy life" and "know thyself".
