About this listing
A lovely (and tiny) bed 'closet' in a beautifully appointed home in the best area of Chicago. Close to the lake, transit, exciting nighlife....not to mention complete with an overly friendly cat named Angus and a rather outgoing host.
Since I am notoriously wordy to begin with, and writing a description of my own flat makes me nervous...forgive me if this comes across as rather too enthusiastic. I will refrain from using any exclamation points.
If you choose to stay with us, you give to experience something that straddles the lines of a little too perfect, a little too quirky, a little too posh, and a little too Martha Stewart. The flat is in a creeky-old, yet very typical, Chicago building. It is on the 8 step elevated ground floor and is blessed with broad expanses of windows that face into a courtyard.
It is commonly home to one friendly young black cat, well groomed, who may or may not be present depending on the whims of the guest.
The ambiance of the flat is something else entirely. The space is filled with beautifully painted serene rooms that are home to a well curated collection of French and American furniture from the 1940s to the 1970s. A rotating collection of modern 20th century fine art and pottery keeps the rooms fresh and interesting. One note about the furnishings; folks who are terribly allergic to wool or adverse to cow hides and taxidermy will find the interior stuffed with enough wool kilims, mohair upholstered things, and fuzzy animal hides to perhaps be uncomforatble.
The room that is being rented started out life as a closet. Literally. 6' by 6' by 9' tall. It has a large window, and walls that are clad in vintage shiplap paneling that has been lacquered a greenish grey color. There is a ceiling fan, nightstand, lamp...it is a super comfy room to sleep in and we love having guests milling around the flat.
The room actually reminds people of being in a train sleeper car or a berth in a ship, which is sort of what I was going for.
Although the glory of this description most likely has you panting to come and stay...there is a little bit more. The hosts!
Host A self admitted gay fellow and is a white collar professional with perfect taste, a stellar sense of purpose, and a writing style / sense of humor that can only be described as unique and self assured. If you need cultural information or any product that is home related, he is the guy to turn to. Hosts B, and C are three more happy gay fellows, all in their early to late 20s and white collar professionals.
We actually occupy what was once four seperate apartments that have been combined into one living space, so everyone has their own spaces in the home.
The basics of the flat include a proper bath, living room with TV and comfy sofa, a real kitchen, a cocktail kitchen, a dining room, a sitting room, and lots of room to spread out in the lower level as needed. Wifi is everywhere.
If needed, guests can have access to professional cooking appliances (8 burner stove, Subzero fridge, Dornbracht fittings) and a dining room that comfortably seats 6 to 8 people around a modern table.
The location is stunning. Literally a two minute walk from the red (main) line train, a 10 to 15 minute stroll to the lakefront parks, so close to Wrigley field you can sometimes hear the roar of the crowd, and so close to the booming nightlife of the 'boystown' gay clubs and the sports bars up and down Clark....all of that is outside of the front door but the street is quiet. Within a minute of walking you can be at a nice coffee shop, and there are well over a hundred places to eat (and three grocery stores!) within a 15 block radius.
Common sense abounds. Tidy up after yourself, don't track in unspeakable things on your shoes, coasters under sweaty glasses on wood surfaces, and attempt to not hula hoop whilst showering. It is an old building, so noise will travel up to the neighbors (email hidden) keep the TV at a normal level, try to not shout into your mobile, and (much as we do think they are adorable) this is not a child appropriate dwelling. You are welcomed to use the kitchen (goodness knows we don't) and even entertain...we just ask that you return everything to it's tidy state when you are done.
Did a 4 days stay at David's place. A very cosy well-decor and clean apartment in a safe and friendly neighborhood. Train stop is just a stone throw away :) Did'nt have much chance to interact with David as he was traveling. Nevertheless , I had a very relaxing stay over there. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a accommodation in Chicago.
David , thanks again :)
David made me feel very welcome in his home! Red line CTA is a 5 minute walk, Wrigley Field is a block and a half away and lots of bars nearby. He's very responsive to communicating any worries or questions I had. What you see in the pictures is what you get. I felt very safe in the neighborhood and appreciated his hospitality. Best AirBNB experience by far -- 5 STARS
A great place to say if you plan on going to a game at Wrigley Field. Only a block and a half away. Small room as described, but perfect for my needs. Bed was very comfortable. Never met David during my visit, but others around the house were very nice. David left great directions to get to and into his place. I hope the next time I go to Chicago the room is available.
My stay with David was quiet, relaxing and convenient. While there was an issue with my key accidentally being misplaced during my arrival, the situation was handled quickly (within only 15 minutes or so) and didn't interfere with my stay at all. I was only in town for the weekend, and while I spent most of my time on the town, this apartment was the perfect place to rest and retreat to. I would recommend the beautiful Posh Flat to anyone staying in Chicago.
Seamless process, and very comfortable. David is a fantastic host, friendly, engaging and very hospitable. Brilliant location for transport, house was as in the pictures. Room was comfortable and cozy!
When I arrived, I completely forgot that David had left the keys and whatnot at the designated area and I rang the doorbell instead. Alex graciously greeted me and helped me settle in. The room itself is small, yes, but cozy and the bed was comfortable :). I was basically free to roam around the first floor and do whatever I want and I didn't feel the need to tiptoe around when others were present. The kitchen, bathroom, living rooms were all clean. When I finally got to see David later on the night, he was welcoming, friendly and had suggestions for activities to do in Chicago. The location was so close to the transit and eateries, I couldn't believe how convenient it was. First time using AirBnB and the bar has definitely been set! Thank you David! :)
Great location. The room is small but very comfy. The TV has Netflix which is also a plus. David himself is a wonderful host: communicative, considerate and very friendly. All the housemates are very nice as well. A great value!

About the Host, David
In a nutshell, I am a fun 30s fellow who lives in Chicago and does high end interior design work.
I have always been interested in showing hospitality to others. Before airbnb this was mostly done by inviting friends and others over to my home for dinner or cocktails....but I find it equally rewarding to be able to host a traveler and know that my home with influence their trip for the better.
As I am getting older I have decided that I really want to travel and see more of the world...but limited finances (coupled with my refusal to sit int he back of planes) as well as a desire to really get to see how people live and just not how tourists are treated makes this a great option for me!
I have quite a few different interests, but I am very into anything design related (architecture, shops, urban life) and am an avid collector of mid century furnishings and love modern art from around 1910 to 1960. I am happy to have one black cat (I like cat's but one is just enough to keep it interesting) and love to entertain friends often. I am also a sucker for British TV, and you will often find BBC America in the background.
I was lucky enough to have the New York Times recently devote two entire pages to me in their home section, making me sound much more interesting in print as compared with in reality and publishing some lovely pictures of my life.
Oh, and my favorite color is that of a wet seal.....greenish gray and shiny!
