Nikolaos was very friendly and helpful. The apartment is even better than you can see on photos. It's near the town center so you don't need to use your car or take a cab. We had a filled fridge when we arrived and everything was nicely decorated and clean.
Thank you Nikolaos and Nina for this great experience.
This apartment is situated above a very busy traffic circle, one of the worst in downtown Thessaloniki, with at least 7 roads funneling into and out of it. Cars frequently honk their horns and motorcycles rev their engines-- at all hours of the day and night. The balcony, bedroom and living room all overlook the traffic circle, so there is no escaping the noise from anywhere but the kitchen. (The dining area is in the same large room as the living area.). The glass doors that overlook the traffic circle are single paned. As a result, we found it very difficult to sleep in this apartment, and never once could sit on the balcony. Similarly, the clothes that we hung out to dry (no dryer- as is true with many apartments in Greece) smelled of exhaust. I have lived in a number of different apartments in Thessaloniki in or close to the center, and never experienced traffic noise like this. Some of the occupants in and around this building (the exterior and immediate vicinity of this building are not great-- though a few blocks away is fine) were also not what you would hope or expect -- we witnessed fights, frequent screaming, and one man left his dog on the balcony nearby to bark between 11 pm and 2 am for several nights, eg. The inside of the apartment is cozy, though, and it is very well stocked with what visitors might need. The towels and linens are nice, and Nicholas kindly brought us some groceries when we first arrived.
At the beginning we are sorry bacause you didn't enjoy your stay in Thessaloniki.
However in our previous e-mail communication you didn't mention in that you have such a serious sleeping problem. It is undoubtfull that in the apartment's description, we don't say that it is placed in a quiet location in fact, it is reported that the facede looks to a square.
We think that traffic and noise in our vicinity is the same as in the other downtown of the city; and it is getting worse this period because of the construction of Metro.
As for the some unconscious drivers, we believe that they exists everywhere.
Eric & I stayed at Nikolaos's apartment for 2 weeks. The apartment was just like its advertisement. We found it comfortable and located close enough to the city for us to walk there comfortably.
Nikolaos is an extremely generous host - the apartment was well stocked with supplies of food and other goods, we were given travel tips and advice about anything we required and were made (email hidden)anks to you, Nikolaos, we had a very enjoyable time in Thessaloniki.
Nikolaus helped to make our stay in Thessaloniki perfect. He made us feel well in his confortable apartment, where we had all that we need. I must say as well that the view from the balcony was a very interesting feature of the apartment. I have no words to say how good our time in this apartment was.
Amazingly beautiful apartment in a good section of the city. It's far enough from the center to be reasonably quiet but close enough to walk down to where the action is. Nikolaos was a wonderful hosts and made sure our stay was comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with food and drink, he had maps and literature about the area available and he has his own cafe down the street where we could relax and watch the world go by.
Our apartment in Thessaloniki was one of our best experiences. Nikolaos communicated with us and organised for us to be picked up from the station. Our bus was late and Nikolaos's wife waited patiently for an hour still greeting us with a smile and like family. The apartment is in a great central location making it easy to walk to most sites of interest. Plenty of food markets, cafes and restaurants. Once there no need for buses or taxis. The apartment is an unforgettable experience. It is/was Nikolaos's mother's apartment and it is like visiting your dear old aunt's home but she is away with everything still in place including food in the fridge (thank you Nikoloas) and family photos, etc. such a warm, generous and homely stay. Not one we will forget easily and would love to return.
Thank you kindly.
