Two of us (large, heterosexual, retired, professional males) shared the room for three weeks. We found Martina to be very friendly and sociable. The area seems safe. The number of restaurants within walking distance is remarkable. The free shuttle bus to the Metro is very convenient; it runs every day but Sunday, but for us the 7 a.m. starting time was about an hour later than we would have wished. In better weather than we had during out stay, one could choose to walk to the Metro in 10 minutes, passing a convenient grocery store en route. The brick apartment building is old and the walls are thin, and having lived in a detached home for years, earplugs helped us a lot. The room is too small to comfortably host two men not sharing the bed (I had agreed in advance to sleep on Martina’s examination table). We would have welcomed a dresser with a desk lamp and chair, and a light in the closet. Martina keeps the apartment very clean (shoes come off at the door) and has decorated it nicely. Wireless internet (1.2 mbps) is shared by the TV, laptops, notebooks, and other devices. The router gets the signal by antenna, not cable or phone line, and is quite sporadic. With three concurrent users, the TV went into “buffering” mode at times. I take full responsibility for not having read the description carefully and thus didn't realize that we two men and a woman would be sharing the same bathroom next to the bedrooms, which was a bit uncomfortable for me. That being said, I would recommend this apartment for an individual or perhaps a couple (sharing the one bed) who would be staying in the NIH/Bethesda area.
Martina was a wonderful host. She readily helped me manage all my luggage (and keep in my mind I had a lot to move back to my home country after a year in the US). The room is very spacious and was kept clean, the bed was very comfortable. Location was simply perfect for me, walking distance to NIH and to great places to eat and hang out in Bethesda. She was very understanding of my going in and out of the apartment all the time, considering I was leaving the country and had a lot to arrange. I would certainly stay again with her, I only regret not having had more time to chat more over coffee!
I spent a week in Bethesda, working at NIH. Martina's place was super convenient, approximately 5 minutes walk from the campus and with a shuttle stop directly across the street from the apartment. Martina was very friendly and we shared several similar interests. This made for interesting discussions on a broad range of topics including sustainable lifestyle, wholesome food preparation, the value of exercise and removal of reactive molecules from our cells. Martina had plenty of maps and even offered a Metro card. The major drawback for me was the lack of a desk and work chair in the room.
Very pleasant and hospitable host.. Conveniently located about 15 min from the metro. I would recommend staying with Martina anytime.
I really enjoyed my stay. Martina was very gracious and hospitable, and she went out of her way to be helpful and accomodating. It was the perfect spot for me, in such a pleasant neighborhood, and I look forward to returning!
Wonderful location! A nice quiet bedroom with a twin bed. The apartment is clean, neat and quiet. Martina is a super friendly lady and always willing to help. If no car, the place is withing walking distance from 2 metro stations, plus bus is outside the building. Great dining options withing minutes walking.
Thank you for everything!
Everything was as advertised, Martina was an amazing host, she provided a tour of the nearby area, and had great suggestions for dining options. Definitely ask about the french bakery. The room was nice and comfortable, with ample closet space, also the walk to the metro is not too far, I hardly used my car at all. Martina has a wonderfully outgoing spirit, always a source of good conversation. I recommend this cheerful room if you will be staying in the area. I am new to DC and stayed here while waiting for longer term housing details to be worked out and I am glad I did.
Martina was a wonderful hostess and her place is exactly as described. Very clean and airy. Great for one person. I was travelling on work so didn't have a lot of time for leisure, but I found Martina to be very knowledgable about the area and can offer great recommendations on places to eat or things to do in the area. I will certainly stay with her again when I need a place in Bethesda. If you are planning a visit to the DC area, Martina's "Cheerful Room" is a good value. Bethesda is a very safe community and provides easy access via public transportation to all the attractions in the area.
Martina is fabulous: helpful with directions, quick to respond, really warm person. Room is cheerful, quiet, comfortable and with lots of nice touches (carafe of water, maps, etc.) Quick walk to NIH, Walter Reed and Metro. I will stay here again!
Martina is a great host, really friendly and helpful. The room's great too, it felt like home in no time. I'd recommend this place to anyone!
