Impeccable accommodations situated halfway along the mile between Downtown Charlottesville and UVA's lawn.

The Space

Butternut Cottage is a small, urban, well-appointed home halfway between the University of Virginia and Charlottesville's Downtown Mall, just off West Main Street. It's an easy walk to both, about 5 blocks in either direction. The free trolley stops just a few blocks away as well and can help you get to UVa, Scot Stadium, JPJ Arena, and more.

Just up the street, West Main is chock full of wonderful restaurants: Maya, Bella, Continental Divide, Orzo, Blue Moon Diner to name just a few right around the corner.

The cottage is fully furnished and outfitted for your stay. There is wireless internet, cable TV, radio receiver, 5-CD player, and a DVD player with surround-sound audio/video. Additionally, there is off-street parking, A/C, iron and board, and other amenities for your comfort. This is a non-smoking residence. Pets may accompany guests with advanced permission and a cleaning fee of $50.

Your continental breakfast will include a minimum of coffee, teas, orange juice, bananas and other fresh fruit, bread and/or rolls, freshly made granola, oat cereal, yogurt, and milk. If there are any substitutions that would be helpful to accommodate allergies, I do my best to meet these needs.

NOTE: the rent amount INCLUDES 6% local sales tax!

Guest Access

The entire house, grounds, and driveway (along with a tag for street parking for a second car) are included in the price/rental.

Interaction with Guests

I learned some time ago as both a guest and a host that it is more fun to experience the rental without interference. Therefore, I've set up an easy lockbox arrangement so guests can check in whenever they arrive in town.

The Neighborhood

I'm just one block off West Main Street and 1/2 mile from both the Downtown Mall and UVA. My neighbors are all great and ready to help if anything comes up. We have artists here, world-class fiddle players, IT experts, moms and babies, retirees, students, PHD candidates, you name it. I love the eclectic, friendly vibe here.

Getting around

Just a block up, on West Main Street, a free trolley travels back and forth between UVA and the Downtown Mall. It runs every 15 minutes Mon-Sat and every 30 minutes or so on Sundays:

  • The Adorable Butternut Cottage is everything and more! It's a truly lovely and obviously well-loved home. Charlotte, the owner, spares no expense to ensure her guests have a wonderful experience. From the locally made granola, yogurts and fresh fruit stocked for our inclusive continental breakfast to little extra toiletries and plush towels in the bathroom, these touches really made the difference.

The beds are very comfortable and the decor is so charming - and SPOTLESS. We had no problems with the free wi-fi and the walk to the University of Virginia was a quick 15 minutes (past a fantastic cupcake shop no less!)

I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend the extremely adorable Butternut Cottage to anyone looking for a special place in Charlottesville.

    Thank you, Charlotte!

  • I loved staying at Butternut Cottage. The house was nicer than I expected, even nicer than the handsome pictures available online. This was my first time using airbnb and I was a little worried that the pictures might be old and outdated and that the place would be a little rundown. That was the furthest from the case. The house was immaculately clean, beautiful, and decorated in excellent taste. Everything inside worked and was elegant. Charlotte, the owner, provided clear, timely instructions and everything was exactly as she promised/instructed. She also provided a delicious, homemade granola mix, fresh fruit, and fresh, homemade bread. the house is located between UVA and the Mall and was an easy walk to both. I highly recommend this place and would stay here again.

  • Simply 5 stars ....very much a home from home ......Charlotte has given a lot of thought to the experience she wants you to enjoy ...from the quality continental breakfast items to the practical post-it notes on the TV & HI-FI.

We have moved on to another AirBnB location which, while beautiful, lacks the je ne sais quoi Charlotte brought to Butternut Cottage.

  • Charlotte's Butternut Cottage made for an ideal stay this past weekend. Perfectly situated, beautifully furnished and a terrific "home base" for our visit. Compared to the variety of quite lackluster hotel options near grounds (all outrageously priced for football weekends), this one is a complete no-brainer. Thanks again Charlotte and look forward to staying again for the next visit.

  • I visited Charlottesville as a UVa alum to show my fiance around in the hopes he'd fall in love with the town like I had. Staying in this cottage certainly helped- walking distance to downtown, blue moon diner, albemarle baking company- perfect! The house itself was just sweet, had everything we needed, and more! Charlotte even provided a lovely breakfast with fresh berries and friend-made granola, it was a full service deal. If we come back to Charlottesville we will certainly be checking to see if Butternut cottage is free.

  • This cottage was a lovely place to stay. Very clean and comfortable property. A very friendly, responsive, and flexible host that was a pleasure to work with and made for a smooth experience. Went above and beyond to make her guests feel welcome - we especially appreciated all the little touches like soap and shampoo, breakfast items, plush towels, and flexible "check out". Thanks, Charlotte!

  • Charlotte's home is wonderful and she made us feel very welcome to her home and to Charlottesville. Highly recommend her place whether you're a family visiting Charlottesville for a week or a recent (website hidden) alum looking for a place near campus for the weekend.

  • Fantastic location walking distance from both grounds and the downtown mall. Allowed us to enjoy both some fun reunion activities at UVa but also go down to the farmers market and festival on the downtown mall. Charlotte was a wonderful host and we will definitely try to book this again when we come through Charlottesville.
