No on-property food service on the weekends, although our communal kitchen is always available for your use, and less than a mile away is a variety of great restaurants. Our farm-to-table vegetarian meals are prepared from the land by our gourmet chef. Expect dairy free, nutritious tropical smoothies with farm fresh eggs and exotic fruits for breakfast, THEN organic salad greens, savory plates, and creative stews for lunch. We offer many raw food options and are passionate about health, vitality, and returning to the source of our foods. We feel so happy to share this with our guests.
Interaction with Guests
We are a tropical permaculture farm and retreat center, so there will be various people (staff, interns, outside community members visiting for permaculture, yoga or hula classes) on property. Though, due to the large amount of land that we have, you can be as private or social as you'd like.
We are located on a 44-acre tropical farm sanctuary on ancient Hawaiian lands in the Puna District, one of the last undeveloped magical coastal regions on the Big Island of Hawaii. The farm is on the windward side, 21 miles Southeast of Hilo - a culturally diverse university town - and less than 1 mile from Pahoa (easy to bike or walk) - a historic town with excellent restaurants, grocery and health food stores, post office and library. Our guests love how close we are to town and how it can feel like we are worlds away from the modern world, yet a gourmet dinner in town can be quick and easy.
This district is known across the globe for its cultural richness and uniqueness. We are mere miles away from an active volcano, of which you can go on lava hikes to see real flowing lava when the flow is good. We are a short distance to warm tidal pools, waterfalls, clothing-optional black sand beaches, natural steam vent saunas from the nearby active volcano, surfing, swimming with dolphins, and lots of sweet community events– farmer's markets, ecstatic dances and culture.
There is some public transit, but it is not exactly convenient or reliable. Your best bet is to rent a car. Hitchhiking is very easy around here for those that are experienced and comfortable with the adventures that hitchhiking brings. We are walking distance to Pahoa town, and just a half hour by car from Hilo airport (ITO).

The place was great, even better than described! Everyone was very nice and welcoming even though I did to stay very long. This is a truly authentic place and an experience out of the ordinary in a peaceful environment. I only took breakfast there but the food was phenomenal and 100% vegan. I would totally recommend the sanctuary and hope I will be back! :)
A lovely experience and stay. The farm is totally beautiful, the "Ecopods" clean and cozy and a short walk to the bathrooms with the flashlights I brought. My son said it reminded him of our local Breitenbush hot springs, since they are also based on intentional community. The first night the jungle sounds were something to get used to, our first night home we were missing them. The breakfast and lunches were lovely, just loved that buckwheat granola the first day! And the community kitchen was a wonderful resource for the meals we wanted to eat in. We did not get to enjoy the classes as my son wanted to get out to the beach, but would have loved to participate more in the permaculture classes.
This is one inspiring and peaceful plot of land! We only stayed a night but got a great feel for the community and set up. We would def. come again, and are even interested in volunteering on the land in the future. The staff and volunteers had only wonderful and supportive things to share. We loved waking up to the sounds of the jungle and starting our morning with an outside shower/hot tob time. Check this beautiful space out if you have time!
