  • The good:
The flat is centrally located, walking distance to most things downtown. Liberty Village shops have everything around the corner. It looks as it does in the pictures with windows at one end & lots of light. We did not hear our neighbors.

    The bad:
The bed is a murphy bed with an extremely firm mattress. This was one of the most uncomfortable beds I have ever slept on and I've done a lot of travelling. If you're going to offer a place to stay as a holiday rental, offer a real bed. The murphy bed itself is meant to be "designer" (it is actually designed by Manny himself), but unfortunately it does not hold a candle to a real mattress and box frame, which is what you need after travelling and what you expect from a holiday rental. It is also covered the mattress with a noisy plastic sheet, which is unnecessary regardless of how expensive the mattress may be...we aren't toddlers.
The temperature was quite hot upstairs - we were unable to adjust the thermostat or open a window to cool the space down. Sleeping was incredibly uncomfortable.
Other inconveniences/things missing - detergent for the laundry, a kettle, oven gloves. It didn't seem like an inventory was done in between guests.

    The Ugly:
We didn't contact Manny mid-visit because 1/ we had a really busy stay and were travelling with international mobiles so were only connected inside the flat, 2/ it was the holidays and we didn't know if he was available, given that he wasn't there to check us in. After our stay, I emailed our feedback to him privately, and was promptly informed that he was "disappointed in our behavior" in that we didn't contact him during our stay and we didn't confirm until one day later that we had checked in. He said if we had the "decency to call" we could have sorted out the issues. He accused us of inconveniencing him and future guests by trying to adjust the thermostat and "unplugging cables" (which we did not do, we only noticed open wiring behind the sofa when we tried to pull out the futon looking for somewhere cool and comfortable to sleep!)
Perhaps he could have come by and made our stay more comfortable, we'll never know. What I know for sure though is that Manny does not know how to treat his guests like guests - immediately turning defensive and accusing us of all of the problems. His response to a cupboard hanging off the wall was, "I imagine you wouldn't like a repair man visiting during your stay, would you?" as if we decided ourselves it should be like that. When we didn't respond immediately to his text about checking in, he called us "unprofessional and rude." We were very respectful guests, even tidying up the flat before leaving so this was totally uncalled for.

If you want a good night's sleep and a drama free host, look elsewhere.

    Response from Manny:

I don't feel it's fair to send a list of complaints to someone after it's to late to do anything about it when no effort was made at the time to advise of your issues. It is very disappointing that Sarah and Paul chose not to communicate with us during their stay to indicate any of the issues they were unhappy about and allow us to make their stay more comfortable. My partner and I are very proud of our space and go out of our way to maintain it above standards. The simple fact that none of these concerns were addressed while they were staying at our suite makes it impossible for us to correct any of the issues and allows us only to address what has turned into a list of complaints after the fact.
I never got a chance to meet Sarah and Paul personally and only can review them by their online communication. It's unfortunate that they did not choose to use the open lines of communication available to them, such as a free wifi and a free phone lines to express their concerns. It could not have been made any clearer from day one that I was at their disposal and they shouldn't hesitate to contact me at anytime during their stay with us.

  • What a fantastic experience. Gorgeous place, perfect location (even nicer than the photos if you can imagine!). Everything was perfectly prepared for our arrival, we would definitely recommend this place.
    Thanks, Manny!

About
I'm an Interior Designer and business owner from Toronto- I also distribute and manufacture my own line of small space furniture, The Machado Home Collection. I Love NYC and I am currently seeking to expand my company and designs into the city. I travel extensively between Toronto and Montreal for business and now would like to add NYC as my 3rd point in my perfect business triangle. I am in a relationship, however our work sometimes keeps us apart, therefore I like to get as much rest as I can when traveling without my partner. I love animals, I'm raising two kitty kats- Pistachio and Cashew, who are the love of my life. I'm very courteous of other people's spaces and as an Interior Designer I love to understand people through their environments. As I believe the place you call home is one of the most important factors in your life. As such, I'm also very specific as to where I stay and where I'll call home, even if it is for only a few days.
