Judy was the sweetest host!! The cottage has everything you need and is super comfortable :) Would definitely love to stay there agaiN!!! Judy is super knowledgeable about the island and was always willing to give us some advice. And she has the cutest grandson that we loved meeting! Thank you so much for everything, we will be back!! Mahalo~ <3
Judy was very kind and accommodating, she had originally not meant to have the dates available that we wanted to stay, but made an exception and allowed us to come anyway, I'm very glad she did! She was especially patient when we did not have service the 3 days prior to arriving; we weren't able to tell her we were coming until an hour before hand and she was very understanding and available to show us around anyway. Her cottage is very clean and looks even nicer in person than in the pictures. She thoughtfully provides many complimentary items such as sunscreen, boogie boards, and beach mats. There was also a bit of food stocked, just random odds and ends really, but a pleasant surprise and extremely convenient when my husband and I didn't have time to go out our first night in Kona. We found a can of baked beans and some popcorn and juice and were quite content to eat that and and take a warm shower and get some extra rest in her comfy bed before our last full day on the island. Breakfast was bagels with cream cheese one day and apple cinnamon oatmeal the next. It was so nice to have that already taken care of so we didn't have to spend time shopping for breakfast food. She even had chips and granola bars and we took those as snacks on our day out snorkeling. We flew in from Hilo and stayed on that side of the island before exploring Kona and staying with Judy, however if you are flying into Kona, her location is quite ideal, so close to that airport! I would definitely stay with her again and recommend her. She is really a very nice person and keeps her place so clean. She is very welcoming and helpful. The only thing that wasn't perfect was accidentally stepping in cat poo my first day, as there are quite a few feral cats. That's is simply an issue on many parts of the island though, and probably can't be avoided, but even still she showed me where the hose was and that took care of that.
Overall, the quality and cleanliness of the cabin and host is very high, and the price is very reasonable and I would highly recommend!
Thank you for a very lovely stay!
Just an amazing private house in a good location. Really handy for exploring the north of the Big Island. Minutes from the airport yet private and quiet.
Judy was a brilliant host too and even got us a bottle of wine to celebrate our honeymoon.
Book this place now!
The accomodations are very clean, the back deck provides cooling mountain breezes in the afternon and evening after a morning/day at the beach and the host, Judy, is a class act. She is green if that is important to you and the cottage and house are almost at the end of the road bordering a nature preserve. Extremely peaceful. We will return.
Judy is a very considerate host, with lots of extras in the Ohana (separate apartment), including a very well-equipped kitchen. We view the kitchen as essential in Hawaii, due to the high expense and generally mediocre quality of restaurant food. A few exceptions include: Ippy's (great quality and low prices by a competition chef), Killer Taco (fairly tasty, nice attitude, low price), Habaneros (Kehou shopping center -- very tasty, great pastor tacos).
When on the island be sure to snorkel at 2-step (the Place of Refuge), night snorkel with the manta rays, and hike the amazing trails along the coast lines -- be sure to have sturdy shoes with you (in addition to Teva sandals), needed for some of the lava fields, etc.
Judy's little cottage was a wonderful place to stay on my first trip to Kona. It's very private and quiet, with the exception of birds singing in the morning. We had everything we needed, the place felt like a functional home rather than just a guest cottage. It's the kind of place I would like to live if I were a Kona local! Sitting on the little back deck drinking coffee and listening to birds in the morning was truly a little slice of paradise :)
What a cool place!! Great neighbourhood, close to tons of sights, restaurants, activities, etc, etc. Judy has thought of everything you could possibly need: towels, toiletries, flashlights, umbrellas...you name it.
The cottage is absolutely amazing. Everything needed was there and it was conveniently located. We would love to come back one day, but if word gets out about this hidden gem I am sure it will be fully booked until eternity!
And just a small thing but it always makes me so happy: the towels in the bathroom smelled fresh, as if they were just washed.
I'm so glad you had a great time in Kona and loved the cottage. I love it too. And I do hope you can come back to visit, anytime would be great. Thanks for the nice Review. You were a Great Guest. Thank you for coming to Kona and staying at Kalaoa Cottage. Hope to see you again. Happy traveling. Keep Happy, Healthy & Safe. Merry Christmas/MELE KALIKIMAKA & HAUOLI MAKAHIKI HOU/Happy New Year. Mahalo, Judy
We enjoyed stay in Judy´s cottage. There was everything that you could need, amazing breakfast in lanai behind cottage:). Judy was great, make lot of tips. Close to airport, beaches, good point to explore west part of Big Island. Merry Christmas!:)
Lovely home near airport and Kona but on the mountainside in the jungle. Loved sitting on the deck and visiting with birds and the cats. Judy was a wonderful host. Had a nice visit. House feels very private even though we were around other homes. Backs up to a reserve so many trees and birds.
