The Windermere area
You'll discover fine varied walking country around Lake Windermere, at the heart of the Lake District. Hire a boat and take to the lake itself, or use the network of footpaths to reach the best high-level views. There are lots of options for places to visit, including Ambleside Roman Fort and Troutbeck Park, which was once owned by Beatrix Potter.
Enjoy this beautiful region and unwind amidst breathtaking scenery at any time of the year. Ramble through some of the best walking country in Britain; get out your mountain bike and go off road or simply enjoy the pleasures of the delightful towns and villages dotted throughout the lakes and Cumbria.
The railway arrived in 1857, making the area much more accessible to visitors and with this demand grew a wealth of Lake District Hotels and a multitude of natural and 'built' attractions. The railway still exists today and brings people from all over the world to this special area of the Lake District National Park. As well as being a sustainable way to travel, most of the Windermere hotels are only a short walk from the station, or at worst a five minute taxi ride.
In terms of attractions, Lake Windermere is well known as England's largest Lake at over 10 miles long and is also the deepest at 65 metres. There are numerous outstanding viewing points within easy reach either by car, or by short walk. Gummer’s Howe is probably the most famous being situated at the south end of Lake Windermere. You can drive most of the way, leaving only a 30 minute walk to marvel at the panoramic views over Lake Windermere and across to Morecambe Bay. To see the Lakes from a different perspective, Arnside Knott rewards those who take this gentle climb with stunning views of the Kent Estuary and Morecambe Bay; simply head for the viewpoint. For a more challenging, but still enjoyable walk for most, take the 2 hour round trip to Brantfell and Post Knott. Take the camera, as there are wonderful views of Windermere, the stunning Langdales and maybe even the Lake District Hotel you’ve chosen. Hope for a clear day and always check the weather forecasts before heading out. Suitable footwear is always important, even on these more leisurely walks.
Around Lake Windermere you’ll find an array of villages and hamlets to enjoy. While the drive will be slow around the twisting back roads, you’ll discover:
+ Fell Foot Park [National Trust] where you can enjoy an ice cream and hire a boat;
+ Aquarium of the Lakes and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway at Lakeside, both being attractions you can enjoy on a sunny or rainy day;
+ At Graythwaite you can enjoy Graythwaite Hall Gardens, which are particularly impressive in the Spring;
+ Head up towards Sawrey and visit ‘Hill Top’, a 17th century farmhouse where Beatrix Potter weaved her lyrical magic.
+ At the north end of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is a Mecca for walking enthusiasts and you can take a lake cruise back to your hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere;
+ Visit the Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere

We loved our stay at Mysty. The place is small but was clean, quiet, and comfortable. It served as a good launching point as we found ourselves walking down to Bowness for pubs and food instead of eating in Windermere. The place had a parking spot which was nice since we had a rental and didn't need to worry about parking. We rented from the 4x4 just up the street and would recommend it to anyone wanting to go out in the countryside if it's raining too much for a walk.
Wow what an amazing hideaway, absolutely everything you need for a comfortable and cosy stay in Windermere. Sharon has thoughtfully adapted this space, not just to get up and go, but to also help you for relax after a long day exploring. It even has a slow cooker so that you can settle down for a tasty hot pot and then watch DVD or listen to Lakelands radio to round off the day. Spot On! Thanks Sharon
My boyfriend and I stayed at Mysty for 5 days and loved it! What a cosy, cheerful little place. It is small, not indifferent to a caravan but acts as a perfect base in the heart of Windermere, close to some good restaurants and pubs and also the local train station and bus depot. We will certainly stay again when the sun returns come spring. Thanks, Sharon.
A *very* small space for two people with a suitcase each, but neat and well presented. We really only needed a place to sleep (and eat), and Mysty was great for that. Close to pubs, cafes, restaurants and the supermarket, and well positioned for general Lakes district tourism. Recommended, especially for those with a car.
This is a cute tiny apartment suitable for 2 people. The kitchen is functional and well-equipped. The location is convenient for the train station and for getting around the Windermere area by bicycle, foot, or bus. (I don't have a car, so no comment on that aspect) The check-in and check-out hours were a little inconvenient. We learned in the Info Center that you can leave your bags at the Fish N Chips around the corner from Natwest for 2.50 per bag (posted hours 11:30am - 5pm). Also, the host contacted me a few days before my arrival about the internet possibly not working. I could detect a couple networks that asked for a password and a couple that wanted me to pay, but it was not clear which (if any) of these I could have attempted. Also, the cable TV signal was very poor and generally unwatchable. If either of these is important, I suggest verifying with the host beforehand. Fortunately, there is an eclectic DVD collection that we enjoyed. Also, the host has some useful guide books.
This is a perfect location in the heart of Windermere in the Lake Country. There is excellent access by train and bus, and the town has many good places to eat and shop. Mysty is very tiny with room for the bed, a tiny kitchen, and a bath. Sharon has made the most of it with lighting and places to place things. Two people with luggage have to coordinate well and it might be easier for one person. We loved being there, however, and especially recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding at the Grey Walls Pub nearby.
Perfect little 'hole in the wall' for the solo traveller, or a couple who don't mind close quarters.
Excellent location that is close to all that Windermere has to offer and with great transport links to the rest of the area I can highly recommend Mysty for a stay in the Lakes District.
We had a good time in a perfect location
Brilliant location and fantastic that it has a parking space outside. My suggestion would be to leave the car where it is and utilise the buses (dog friendly). You need to make sure you are very comfortable with the person you are sharing with as you are in each others way alot.
Thank you very much Sharon for arranging early access for our stay and sorry once again for interrupting your ride because I transposed the keysafe code !
Mysty is accurately described. It was ideal for us and good value because we had family staying in an excellent park in Bowness (but it cost them more than £40 a night for caravan parking).
It was lovely to be able to follow in the footsteps of Wainwright up Orrest Head, which was his first ascent in Lakeland.
My 3 point turning skills were good enough for our 2009 Seat Leon (a much larger car might be a bit tricky) so the parking space was another welcome bonus.
