House - Private room · 40th Pl, Hyattsville, MD 20781, United States

The Space

Available mostly year-round. Both long-term and short stays are welcome.

I am a musician, lots of fun, and enjoy meeting new folks. I have a cozy private bedroom with a double bed and private entrance in a 1919 bungalow in Hyattsville's historic district, which is less than two miles from the D.C. border and within five miles of the University of Maryland College Park, Catholic University, Howard University, Gallaudet University, and Trinity Washington University. Also about 15-20 minutes from NOAA, NASA, Discovery Communications, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington Navy Yard... The house is one mile from the West Hyattsville metro, which is 1 stop outside of DC (15 minute ride to Gallery Place, 10 minute ride to U Street). A shuttle bus to the metro is just a block from the house, which operates on weekdays.

There is a shared bathroom and kitchen - please let me know if you are interested in cooking. You will have access to a grill or fire pit as well. The room has a flat screen TV with FIOS, Wi-Fi, mini fridge and lots of windows with lovely views of the trees and local wildlife.

The house is just off of Rhode Island Avenue/Route 1. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, craftsman bungalow with a nice-sized backyard, patio furniture, grill, fire pit, and front porch. It's walking distance to the new Arts District development - Busboys and Poets restaurant and events venue, Yes Organic Market, Tara Thai, Franklin's Brewpub, Chipotle, Elevation Burger, a frozen yogurt place, and a yoga studio. The house also backs up to Magruder Park, with walking and bike trails.

We are smack dab in the middle of the burgeoning Gateway Arts District, with the Washington Glass School and Studio, Glut Food Co-op, Joe's Movement Emporium (free yoga twice a week!) just a mile away.

  • Janine was an amazing host who offered us tasty homemade muffins, cookies and banana bread in the morning and that was a lovely treat. She also has the most creative, amazing and antique like space. Everything is so perfectly placed and full of color and life. Even her guest book was an antique relic from the 1940s-- truly capturing the spirit of her home. Refashioned vintage!

Our view from our room was awesome and she, of course, put up some cool curtains, but the windows are all around and emit a nice sunny room in the morning. There are also wind chimes to wake you. It was cute, quiet and quaint.

My partner and I drove from New York, so your car can safely be parked in this cool house in the back yard, which is super awesome as well.

She has wifi, a comfy, creative space and a positive vibe that I would suggest to anyone traveling in the DC/Maryland area with a car. She's fun and so giving, as well as a great listener!

You don't want to miss out!

  • Janine is a great host. I stayed at her place for one night. She took care of me in best way possible. Her room is comfortable for one person or a couple. It is in a good area of town. Thank you Janine, I will definitely come back to your place if I come to Maryland.

  • Janine was an awesome host, she was incredibly accommodating and super chill. Our only regret was that we didn't stay longer! We had a lovely day in DC and when we got back we shared some drinks and wonderful conversation with her. If you're going by yourself or as a couple she has the perfect place to stay

  • Janine is super super nice!!!
Prior to our arrival, she has given us detailed information about the transportation, eateries nearby, and how to get into the house. She is willing to drive us every day to and from the Metro station - we highly appreciate that!
Owing to the unusually cold weather during our stay, she had tried her best to heat the room up with different heaters; she even went to the store early in the morning the next day just to buy us a better heater for the room!
She is more than nice as a host, we like her very much!!
I would highly recommend Janine to anyone:)))
    Thank you Janine!!

  • This was our first airbnb experience and could not have been better!
The home is eclectic and artsy. Cozy & charming. The bed was so very comfortable. Janine is wonderful hostess. The bar has been set high for our future airbnb stays. The metro was easy and perfect for visits into DC. When you stay at Janine's house ask her for directions to Franklins. Great food and delicious craft beer and close to her house. Felt like we were staying with a friend instead of someone we were meeting for the first time!

  • A fantastic stay in dc! Janine was the best host you could ever ask for- she made the best blueberry muffins for us, provided a wonderful room, and equally great conversation. the home was 15 mins or so from the heart of dc's main attractions, and the home was just as described. the bed was a full, which my husband and i were fine with, and the room was a little smaller, which she was perfectly upfront with, but was extremely cozy.

Janine also was kind enough to let us put our baby in a pack and play in the adjacent dining room which worked out well. I would highly recommend Janine and her home to any and all, and would ad our word of caution to beware of the photo enforced traffic laws in DC!! lol :)

  • We arrived on Halloween evening in time to enjoy the trick-or-treaters. This was especially fun, since we don't get them where we live. Janine's bungalow was a real treat. Every room (that we were in) contained a treasure trove of eclectic things just waiting to be discovered. We would revisit Janine again, if we find ourselves in the DC area again. Janine gave us great directions, that got us right to her doorstep, and checked in with us as we neared Hyattsville, just to make sure everything was going well. This was our first experience with airbnb, and we didn't really know what to expect. But this worked out perfectly. With such a positive first experience, we will definitely try it again!

About
I am an award-winning performing musician and songwriter in the region. I love flea markets, thrifting, vintage styles, cooking, gardening and just having loads of fun in general. I originally had two cats, Henri and Blanche, but earlier this year got suckered by an adorable stray that started coming around the house and I decided to take him in. His name is Georges. And, yep, I'm a big ol' Francophile - and with good reason, my great grandfather was from France - so it's in my blood. I wave the French and Ohio State Buckeye flags proudly (I'm an Ohio girl). Yes, I've had folks from Michigan stay in my guest room... I love meeting folks from all over the globe and making them feel welcome in my home. I've been told numerous times that my home is cozy by friends and people visiting for the first time. That makes me smile. I love traveling as well. I am comfortable traveling in style or low budget. It's more about the experiences instead of wear I lay my head! My favorite places are Paris and Texas so in tribute I like to say my house has the style of Paris, Texas. Still need to take a trip there!
