About this listing
Available mostly year-round. Both long-term and short stays are welcome.
I am a musician, lots of fun, and enjoy meeting new folks. I have a cozy private bedroom with a double bed and private entrance in a 1919 bungalow in Hyattsville's historic and arts district, which is less than two miles from the D.C. border and within five miles of the University of Maryland College Park, Catholic University, Howard University, Gallaudet University, and Trinity Washington University. Also about 20 minutes from NOAA, NASA, Discovery Communications, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington Navy Yard...It's one mile from the West Hyattsville metro on the Green Line, which is 1 stop outside of DC (15 minute ride to Gallery Place, 10 minute ride to U Street). A shuttle bus to the metro is just a block from the house, which operates on weekdays.
The house is within just a few miles of major thoroughfares such as 495/95, 50 (to Annapolis), and 295 (to Baltimore); 30-40 minutes from BWI; 25-35 minutes to Reagan National Airport, and about an hour from Dulles International Airport. We are about 20 minutes from Union Station.
Two neighbors also rent rooms on Airbnb, so groups of friends, or guests of our guests, can stay next door and still be close!
The house is also walking distance to the new Arts District development - Busboys and Poets restaurant and events venue, Yes Organic Market, Tara Thai, Franklin's Brewpub, Chipotle, Elevation Burger, a frozen yogurt place, and a yoga studio. We also back up to Magruder Park, with walking and bike trails connecting to DC. We are within a few miles of the Chocolate City Brewing Company, New Columbia Distillery and new Union Market. On Sundays, you can go a mile away to Arrow Bicycle and join a 32 mile group ride for free.
We are also in the middle of the burgeoning Gateway Arts District, with the Washington Glass School and Studio, Glut Food Co-op, & Joe's Movement Emporium (drop-in yoga!) just a mile away.
Parking space available.
Interaction with Guests
I like to spend as much time as I can with you or as little time as you like.
Basically, please clean up after yourself, no smoking in the house (outside is fine) and that's pretty much it!

Thank you so much for your hospitality. It was a great experience and you have been a great hostess.
Thank you for making us eggs with bacon, coffee, and the amazing banana bread as breakfast, picking us up in DC, and for letting us feel at home. It was a wonderful stay and we really liked it. Thank you again!
It is real ya good experience living in Janine's house. The room is really lovely and the host is really easy-going so we have a good communication with each other. I am really recommend it!
Janine was just a wonderful host and even took us out to her favourite local restaurant/ watering hole on our last night. We loved our late night chats over glasses of cinnamon whiskey and it definitely felt more like staying with an old friend than a stranger!
As for the house it was decorated beautifully and was so creative. Her cats are cute and everything was clean and comfortable. The garden is a fab place to hang out also- just don't forget your mosquito spray!
Can't recommend Janine's place highly enough. Stay here for a proper DC experience!
Our stay with Janine was purely and simply perfect ! Janine is more than a great host, it feels like you've know her forever : she's kind, very thoughtful and put you at your ease. Her exceptional house straight out of a fairy tale. We stayed in a beautiful room, with a pleasant temperature during the nights, we ate her marvellous muffins AND banana cake in the morning and she always offered to give us a ride to downtown DC. Stay at Janine's place if you visit DC!!

About the Host, Janine
I am an award-winning performing musician and songwriter in the region. I love flea markets, thrifting, vintage styles, cooking, gardening and just having loads of fun in general. I originally had two cats, Henri and Blanche, but earlier this year got suckered by an adorable stray that started coming around the house and I decided to take him in. His name is Georges. And, yep, I'm a big ol' Francophile - and with good reason, my great grandfather was from France - so it's in my blood. I wave the French and Ohio State Buckeye flags proudly (I'm an Ohio girl). Yes, I've had folks from Michigan stay in my guest room...
I love meeting folks from all over the globe and making them feel welcome in my home. I've been told numerous times that my home is cozy by friends and people visiting for the first time. That makes me smile.
I love traveling as well. I am comfortable traveling in style or low budget. It's more about the experiences instead of wear I lay my head! My favorite places are Paris and Texas so in tribute I like to say my house has the style of Paris, Texas. Still need to take a trip there!
