The Space

Cozy apartment at the heart of Jing'an District, Shanghai; near Line 2 Jingsu Lu Metro station (which is an intersection of line 2 and line 11) and two major bus stops (goes to french concession area in 15 minutes by 2rmb bus); 5 minutes bus to Zhong Shan Park.15 minutes walk from Jing'an Temple.

Located in a complex lined with beautiful Chinese parasol trees, with local Shanghainess street structure. This is probably more of the real Shanghai people's day-to-day life, with old typical shanghai flats buildings and Mom-dad shops at the corner. Also bars, cafes, medium to affordable range of food around (from 0.8USD clean n yummy Shanghainese noodle to 20USD Sichuan Restaurant to 80USD French gourmet). Free Wi-fi (20M broadband), hot shower, kitchen with all equipment except oven (you really don't need oven in Shanghai :P), bed room balcony, we have plenty books and movies and really good collection of exotic tea if you would like a cozy and quiet day home.

Enjoy free enjoy-shanghai advice. We have tons of books, maps, and good advice that will take you around to see the real Shanghai. Where we are at is close to lots of cheap and yummy local take-away restaurants (including take-away best veggie bun store in Shanghai, 0.2USD per bun); we collected a range of really good take-away menus, and they are supreme. Great security with complex guards, safe bicycle packing and a bike that can lend you but be aware it's easy to lose your bikes in Shanghai: ).

We offer flexible accommodation options here. A private room with one single bed; or you can stay at the cozy couch which can be unfolded to a comfortable 1.6m x 2.4 m bed for more affordable options, TBD). If you really want an authentic Shanghai experience, not going to another place hanging with people with same faces of your own country and you are easy going, willing to explore and make friends, maybe it's the way for you to go (website hidden) by Airene and Gregory: Airene has studied and worked in Australia, a world traveler with genuine curiosity to people, art and culture, now working in an international NGO on building management; Gregory is from Edmonton, Canada and has been living and working in China in sustainable design and user experience design industry for almost 5 years!

Interaction with Guests

We used to at some point not live here at the apartment which becomes our biggest regrets because that way we can't hang out with guests often. We are glad that we finally move back!! As both of us have day job, we won't be around much during the day, but will be there at night in the room next door~~ We are happy to chat and go out with friends, however if you need more privacy, we can also be very quiet : ).

The Neighborhood

West Wuding Road was rated last year as one of the most romantic roads in Shanghai mainly because of the history and the nice street view. Opposite the 1398 Nong (which is where we live), a old English Kaina Apartment Building that China's famous author Eileen Chang used to live in her earlier years. The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra is just 3 minutes on the west side. There are lots of old lane houses with interesting stories- the older Shanghaineses are very friendly so you can go and explore yourself.

It's a bit different from French Concession as you access more the real Shanghai today- a mix of few high-rise, local restaurants, old lane houses, grand shopping malls and easily accessible public transportations. Oh, we even have a police station 3 mins from here, in case you need to register and of course no worries even more of safety.

Getting around

Metro: 5-7 mins walk to Line 2 Jing Su Road Metro station. At Jiang Su Road Station you can take Line 2 and Line 11.
Bus: Two major bus stops - takes 10 mins to french concession area and 5 minutes bus to Zhong Shan Park.
Walk: 10 minutes walk to West Yan'an Road; 15 minutes walk to Jing'an Temple;
Taxi: Within 30 RMB (5 Dollars), you can also access to everywhere all the way from Downtown to the Bund.

  • Airene was very friendly and her house was very decorative and cool! I enjoyed my stay at Airene's. Also, the location is very convenient and can quickly access Jing'an temple. I will definitely recommend staying at Airene's stay.

  • Airene and Greg are more than nice, they are amazing. I felt they were family in just a couple of hours. And when in Shanghai the best thing to have is family who speak mandarin! The apt is ok: well located, next to line 2 (crossing east to west) in an area where you can live the real Shanghai life. Don't expect many confort or a fantastic bed but, hey, you are here to enjoy the city!

By the end of the day I reccomend the place.

    Response from Airene:

Hey Flavio, thanks for it. You are actually the first guest using the hard bed --we just changed the side of the matt recently as I started to have problems with my back with the soft side and I loved by the end of Yoga the last pose was sleeping on the wooden floor and we often sleep so well and refreshingly~~ I thought about asking how you feel with the bed but somehow forgot about it. Thanks for coming too.

  • I loved my stay at Airene's! Her appt is well-located and not far from Jing'An, one of the liveliest areas of Shanghai, all the more for (email hidden), she & her boyfriend kindly helped me with my luggage and also took the time to introduce me to the surroundings (also the rest of the city if needed).
Room was very clean and tidy, perhaps just a bit cold during the night (probably to consider if you're travelling during winter season).

  • Airene is one of the most friendly and welcoming people I've met. It's exactly what you need when arrive in Shanghai and don't speak mandarin! She has a wealth of local knowledge, with good recommendation on places to eat nearby. She can answer any random question you have and good company to chill out with in the evening. The apartment is homey and full of inspiration with quotes, illustrations and photos. She also has a great collection of authentic Chinese tea to try out. Thanks for the pleasant stay Airene!

  • Airene, firstly I feel sorry about my late comments here because I'm crazily busy during this travel. Secondly I have to say sorry because I couldn't say goodbye in front of you and Gregory. I like you guys both very much although we only had one night talking. I'm interested in what are you are doing and all the travel experience of yours, so we leave it next time to talk and I'm so disappointed that I don't have time to hang out with you guys for dinner or afternoon tea which I were indeed eager to. So I'm thinking we could leave all these pending things to the time I come to Shanghai again! It's a promise! See you guys then and many thanks for your hospitality and also please say thanks for me to Gregory.

  • An amazing person in a really homelike and well located appartement. I had such a great time at Airene's home. She helped me to buy traintickets, recommended me places to see in Shanghai but also in whole China, where I went afterwards. She also took me to her yogaclass and we spent the evening together. The room is sunny and spacious, the heaterblanket makes the big bed warm and comfortable. I would definitively recommend this place and I'll hopefully stay with Airene someday again.

  • Great location, very nice place. Unfortunately, we weren't able to spend much time with Airene but she was easily accessible. The heated blanket also helps a lot during the winter cold!
