Mary was a fantastic host. It was a pleasure spending time with her and at her lovely home in Langkawi. Mary welcomed me in to her life of friends, laughter and good music. It was a highlight of my trip!
We stayed here for four weeks and it was a pleasent stay. A real Malasian wooden house on stilts with all comfort and very good fans. And always cool water from the "waterworldmachine". Very important in a tropical country. Mary is a good hostess and doesn't bother you, but if you need something she is there. Last but not least: she has good music and two beautiful cats: Pink and Floyd.
Mary is a great host who gives you a perfect balance of friendly information with plenty of privacy. As well as coming out with us to local restaurants, Mary gave us plenty of information about the local area and helped us to hire a car at a very reasonable rate. The fridge and larder were stocked with useful essentials plus plenty of toiletries in case you may have forgotten something. Her cats Pink and Floyd were regular visitors.
Mary's traditional kampung home is as lovely as the pictures promised with lots of tasteful decorative touches. Sitting on the verandah and enjoying the surrounding natural wetlands with birds, butterflies and monitor lizards was perfect! :-)
Sadly, this little piece of paradise is no longer quite so perfect as it was :-(. On an immediately adjacent beautiful wetland meadow (which would so definitely be protected in many other countries) the local landowner has started construction and isn't minded to tell anyone what he intends to build - no planning permission, no courtesy, no information. At present the damage is limited to an unsightly area of landfill. Inevitably this intrusion is slowly starting to destroy the balance of nature and the monitor lizards already seem to have moved out. In due course Mary has decided she too will be moving out and setting up another Air bnb elsewhere on this lovely island.
In the words of Joni Mitchell . . .
"Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone?
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot"
Mary was amazing! Her home is truly beautiful and it was fantastic being with the langkawi nature which is all around. Mary picked us up from the airport so we didn't have any trouble finding the place. She is very knowledgable about the area and took us to some fantastic bars and her friend's brilliant restaurant, Sopranos! By the time we had to leave (and believe me we didn't want too!) Mary was a true friend not just a host!
Staying with Mary was lovely. The day started with meeting Mary at the arrival hall at airport. We have been to Langkawi numerous times and getting around was not a problem. It was such a coincidence that we love the same hang out places as Mary. The house is situated at the end of the road, therefore we had a lot of privacy. You get a 1 bedroom, living hall, dining area, kitchen, bathroom and terrace with view. Mary stocked up the fridge well with milk, juice, eggs, bread, butter, jam, yogurt, etc... You can do simple cooking if you want to, but it was so much easier to eat out. Personally, I don't want to cook during vacation. The bathroom is also well provided with toiletries in case you forget to bring your own. There's spot for us to park our rented car. I love it that Mary has recycling bins for paper, cans and plastics. The reception was good for my mobile phones and portable internet. Her cats, Pink and Floyd will make their regular rounds to the house. Floyd particularly will follow me around the house and accompany me. Lady luck was shining on us as Mary took us to her friend's restaurant opening called The Sopranos. We had a wonderful time there and met so many nice people in Langkawi. Also check-in and check-out time are flexible. I enjoyed my last day at Mary's without worrying about check-out time which i usually do at hotels. Thanks Mary for having us! xoxo
The house is exactly as described traditional style overlooking rice paddy and water buffalo. The house is quite dark but has all the basic needs. Mary did meet me at the airport as promised. Taking the main road to the house the beach is approx 800m away, or a 5 min cycle if you take the bike. Penang chenai is a very populated Beach with bars and water sports along most of it. I hired a car on the 3rd day and checked into a resort with a pool. Depends what you're looking for. I wasn't sleeping very well at Mary's and needed a good night's sleep.
I am originally from England but have lived in many different countries including Australia and the Middle East. Married for too many years and have three grown up children all living in different countries. Now single and enjoying a very different life in Langkawi! My first love is music, live if I can find it! I enjoy bars, restaurants and good company so Langkawi is perfect for me. I have two devine cats, Pink and Floyd! Hosting with Airbandb has been a real success so far and I have been lucky in having some great guests!
