About this listing
Dar Al Bahar is certainly the name it deserves: the house by the sea.
Built on the ramparts of the city of Essaouira in the "San Dion" area, she faces the ocean and its trade winds. From the terrace the view is one of constant movement, winds breaking against the rocks of the coast, offering an amazing spectacle. From there, you can also enjoy the panoramic view over the medina with its northern fort of the ancient Scala and the Mellah (the former Jewish quarter). In the distance, you can see the sand dunes, which actually touch the northern outskirts of the city.
Jean-Claude and Lise, a french-dutch couple, have completely renovated this house which was built at the turn of the last century. At that time, this part of Essaouira was much more animated thanks to the presence of an authentic windmill which formerly provided flour for the city and the back country. At this place, a new hotel has been built but the street name remained: Touahen, which means mill in Arabic.
Today, the peacefulness of this place is only disturbed by breaking waves and shrieking seagulls.
You will certainly have a pleasant stay in Dar Al Bahar !
The published room rate refers to a twin room without sea view. If you wish to find out the rates and availabilities for other room types, please send us a message and we will return with a swift reply. Breakfast is included.
Rate does not include the tourist taxes applied by the city (23 dirhams/person/night), to be settled in cash at the front desk.
A lot of good things have been written about this small hotel and I would not want to cast any doubt on the reviews of others. However our experience was not the same. It seems that not all the rooms are offered through airbnb. We were told it was just the two twin rooms. We were given room 1 which is situated on the ground floor, behind the checkin desk. It was very very small. Not that this particularly bothered me. I didn't even mind the street noise. What Did annoy us was the constant noise from the water pump which came on every time someone upstairs used water, the door bell which guests had to ring to gain access every time and the conversations of every guest as they came and went. If we could hear everything that was said in the hallway, we assumed they could also hear everything we said and did. Not conducive to privacy? Also, the bathroom, although having beautiful tiles, was extremely and unbearably smelly. The hotel is run by staff who were nice enough. But we didn't meet the host and our issues were dealt by a third party. After a couple of hours in the room, we had had enough and chose to find somewhere else to stay. We were pleased that we were offered a full refund on request. We have advised the owners that we do not feel room one is suitable for occupation. Both of us were quite ill in the 24 hours after we left the hotel and I do wonder if the bathroom and the noxious fumes were anything to do with that. We had been well up to the time we arrived, had been fastidious about cleanliness and careful about where we ate. But who knows, it may be unrelated. If you are offered room 1 in the lobby, I suggest you turn it down. Ask for an upstairs room and hopefully you will have as good an experience as everyone else seems to have done.
Wir wurden freundlich empfangen. Das Riad ist super gelegen. Das Frühstück auf der Dachterrasse ein Hit. Mohamed ein fröhlicher , aufmerksamer Kellner. Wir fühlten uns sehr wohl. Die Aussicht auf der Dachterrasse, einmalig. Wir würden wieder kommen.

Really nice warm welcoming team, perfect location in the old medina, and awesome view during breakfast on the ocean and the skala. The rooms are very clean, and decorated with taste. I recommend Dar Al Bahr to anyone who wishes to have a pleasant stay in Essaouira.
Wir haben es nicht gleich gefunden, die Begrüßung war unspektabel.
We had a wonderful new years eve on the terasse of this fantastic accomodation. It is quite easy to find, the room was super nice and the breakfast, which you can choose to have on the terasse or the dining area was great. Afterwards we heard from friends that we stayed in the best place in Essaouira and we're not going to argue with that.
The staff were very nice and accommodating. Our room was very tiny but the spacious terrace made up for it - such an incredible view!
