Olomayiana Private Bush Camp

Olomayiana is a private self-catering bush camp in Kajiado County. It's our home, but we often can’t be there, so we offer it out on Airbnb. The five bedrooms are either en-suite tents or en-suite cottages and are spread out throughout the camp. There are staff at the camp to help you with cleaning, food prep/re-heating and washing-up but we do not have a chef/cook who can do elaborate meals.

The space
Olomayiana is located in the Maparasha Hills 75 minutes drive from Nairobi airport and 45 minutes from the border with Tanzania and the road to Amboseli National Park. The Maparasha hills are on a migration corridor for Amboseli National Park. During the dry season, there is insufficient grazing to support Amboseli's wildlife population. As a result, there is migration out of the park as far, and beyond Olomayiana. Take a look in our wildlife book to see what has passed through the farm, and please do add to it should you come across any game (large or small!) during your stay. Entries include porcupine, aardvark, leopard, kudu, lion, zebra, eland, buffalo, impala, monkeys, wild dogs, elephant and baboons as well as a host of different birds.

Mary and Emily will come each day to clean the rooms and wash-up. The kitchen is large and well-equipped and a social space. The kitchen is fully equipped including two solar fridge/freezers (ice made by the sun!), a gas oven and hob. There is also a gas bbq, safari oven, and a charcoal pizza oven in the outdoor kitchen - with a seating area and 'Big Bertha' our large chiminea.

There is a large charcoal cooler which is perfect for vegetables and other foods you want to keep cool (if you don't have enough fridge space). We have a lot of cheeky monkeys so please don't leave food out as they will help themselves!!!

All power is solar (so no hairdryers or electric kettles!); the water is safe to drink coming from our own borehole, and water is also heated by solar power for showers. We have good sunshine hours so it's generally hot, but late night showers mean it needs a couple of hours in the morning to heat up again. We can heat water by fire for a bath (in the Glass Cottage) or a hot shower in the single bathroom (which is not attached to any bedroom).

The pool is a short walk from the main campsite. The 2 cottage bedrooms and 3 tent bedrooms are spread out to allow privacy. There is a 5-minute walk to a purpose-built sundowner spot with views of the whole valley or you can take a 20-minute walk to pride rock. There are a lot of cut paths for walks on our property. Alternatively, take a ride through the Bush on one of our horses.

Guest access
Set on 80 acres you can access all parts of the farm and camp - either on foot or on one of our horses (there are extra charges for horse riding). There is covered parking for 3 cars (if you get your car to breathe in when you park) but two is easy!

Other things to note
Ideally, you need a high clearance vehicle to access Olomayiana. It can be done in a saloon car (we've frequently done it in our old Toyota Corrolla) but it is bumpy! There are wild animals on the farm and so the owners assume no liability for damage to person or property of visitors from wildlife or accidents. Having said that walking on the paths and around the farm is fairly safe - just be careful if you venture into denser bush. It is a good idea to ask what animals have been around in the previous 24 hours. Our horses sometimes wonder up to the campsite to see what's going on and to see if a carrot might be on offer. They are all friendly but if you're not familiar with horses, please don't walk close behind them where they can't see.

Sit and watch the wildlife, go for walks, groom the horses and donkeys, collect eggs from our chickens, go horse riding, have a badminton match, play ping pong, take a swim, enjoy the stunning views. As well as the wildlife, and nearby trips to Amboseli National Park, you can walk further afield - our neighbours are very welcoming but please be respectful, and seek permission to go on their land.

You can buy vegetables and basics in Bisel, the nearest supermarket is in Kajiado which is a 35-minute drive. There should be some eggs and veggies available for you to use.

I have been traveller all my life and get itchy feet if I am in one place for too long. I am a married mother of 3 who works full time and likes to be busy. I love the outdoors and Africa is home but I also spend time in Ireland and UK
During your stay
We have 4 staff who live in a house near the stables. Mwangi is our farm manager. Mary looks after the camp, keeping things clean and can do a bit of cooking and she is helped by Emily. Richard number 1 looks after the horses and our donkeys. Richard number 2 (who does not live on Olomayiana) is the night guard. If you think the staff did a good job, please leave them a tip, it helps them feel appreciated for their hard work.
