Anna and Peter's place is a real find! Nestled in the bush on the Otago Peninsula, it is perfect for those wanting to curl up with a book and a view, or those wanting to explore the scenery and take in the local wildlife. The house is private and secluded (loved the indoor/outdoor shower!) and very comfortable. Gorgeous breakfast supplied - homemade bread and spreads were a real treat. Anna and Peter were super friendly and made our weekend away very relaxing. Couldn't recommend more highly!

After a scenic drive along the bay to the remote area of the peninsula, we were greeted by Peter upon arrival--he was very welcoming, showed us around the cabin and the grounds, and brought in trays full of food they grew on their property. There are easy and short hiking trails on the property and the seals are just a short drive further down the road. The retreat was the perfect place to relax, drink wine by the fire, and enjoy the views. A must stay in Dunedin.

The Hereweka Garden Retreat was one of the highlights of our trip! The little home is gorgeous inside and out. From the cute and warm fireplace, to the stunning views, comfortable bed, delicious breakfast and amazing shower, we had an amazing stay and would love to come back for more. Anna & Peter were exemplary hosts and made us feel welcome the whole time. Even after arriving quite late for check-in, Anna made sure to come say hello and make sure we were comfortable. We even got to say hello to their gorgeous brown labrador. All in all, the home is perfect for a romantic getaway and we will be recommending this to all our friends and family.

This place is absolutely stunning and not your average airbnb--it's a luxury experience. Everything is modern, gorgeous, impeccably clean, and so comfortable. Most beautiful shower of all time. The area is private and secluded but also close enough for exploring the peninsula area--not a long drive from the Albatross Centre, where we loved seeing the blue penguins at night. The setting is breathtaking and peaceful. All of the extras--the wonderful breakfast, DVDs, books, magazines, and high quality New Zealand-made bath products--made this beautiful place even more special. We didn't even want to leave the retreat, it's that amazing! Anna was so pleasant and helpful as well. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Your hosts at Hereweka Garden Retreat are Peter Cooke and Anna Moore. Peter is the local Portobello General Practitioner while Anna works as a psychotherapist in Private Practice in Dunedin. Both now work part-time so they have opportunities to follow their other passions.

Anna and Peter met at University, and right from the start shared a passion for the natural environment, gardening, organics and sustainable practices. In 1983, with two young children, they fell in love with this property and felt that many of their dreams could be realised here. They purchased the property and named it Hereweka Garden.
Building a Luxurious Garden Retreat on the Otago Peninsula
Quite apart from the beauty of the surroundings there were many other aspects to this property which gave it huge potential. It was situated on a sheltered north-facing slope with a unique micro-climate allowing for a huge variety of plants to be grown. A ridge of original native forest had miraculously survived the plunder of clearing, burning and logging. There was abundant wildlife; both on the property and within easy reach of it.

Everything fell into place. The general practitioner for the area had recently left and Peter began practicing medicine as the local doctor. The medical practice had run down, so initially Peter was working part-time and spent his precious free hours developing Hereweka Garden Retreat. Anna stayed at home to look after their growing family - two more children were born here - and helped Peter develop the garden and nursery.
Stunningly Beautiful Ecological Accommodation
Since then, Peter and Anna have turned their dream into a reality. Today Hereweka Garden Retreat has a three acre garden, including a large organic vegetable garden and orchard. The ridge of native trees is protected by a QE II National Trust open space covenant, with the rest of the property planted out in several hundred exotic trees, many of which are rare and unusual. The property is managed by organic, sustainable methods. Open by appointment to visitors, it has become well-known and has been featured several times in major New Zealand garden magazines.
