SquawLodge™ is a wonderful 2600-square-foot, 3-story house with 5 rooms for sleeping and 3 full bathrooms on a quiet corner lot in Olympic Valley, home of top-rated Squaw Valley Ski Resort, site of the 1960 winter Olympics. Guest access

The entire house is available to you, except for locked storage.

Move items and light furniture as you like, but please return them to the original location upon check-out or you may be charged for resetting the house.

Interaction with guests

You can reach us by message, phone or email. Please let us know immediately if you have any questions or concerns during your stay.

The neighborhood

The neighborhood is very quiet. People enjoy taking daily strolls. Brush up on your astronomy by observing the many stars that are visible. Enjoy the chipmunks scampering around, but please keep your distance from other animals, domestic and wild.

Getting around

We recommend that you have a vehicle to get to the myriad of Lake Tahoe and Reno destinations. However, you can always walk, bike or take the bus into The Village at Squaw Valley to enjoy the food and entertainment options there.

The Tahoe Area Rapid Transit Hwy 89 bus will also take you to Truckee and Tahoe City. To get to the bus stop, head toward Squaw Valley Road, then turn left. The bus stops are a couple of blocks away, close to the Resort at Squaw Creek. Allot 10-15 minutes for a leisurely walk there.

During ski season, the free Alpine Meadows/Squaw Valley shuttle helps you experience both ski locations.

Other things to note

Please check out our recommended locations to visit by viewing our map/guidebook in this listing. A set of brochures of some popular activities are also available at SquawLodge. Books about the area may be found in the great room bookcase.

Check-in is after 4PM

SquawLodge™ is not a hotel. We offer our family home as a vacation rental. We expect you to do your part and learn about our amenities, follow the rules, and complete the check-out procedure in its entirety. Don't hesitate to contact us at any time with questions or concerns.

Check-in: 4 p.m.
Check-out: 11 a.m.
Failure to vacate on time may result in additional charges.

No smoking in the house or garage.

SquawLodge™ is in a quiet neighborhood where sound carries long distances. In consideration of our neighbors, please observe Quiet Time:
Weeknights: 10 p.m.
Weekends: 11 p.m.

Limit your water usage. California is in a prolonged severe drought and is under strict water conservation measures. Please limit showers to five (5) minutes. Wash full loads of dishes and laundry (or adjust the cycle/water level accordingly). Use one set of towels per person (one bath towel, one hand towel, one washcloth). You may be charged for using extra towels.

Supervise children at all times as there are stairs, wild animals, large boulders, and small rocks. The house is not child-proofed. You are welcome to move items to higher shelves to prevent accidental ingestion. Please return them to their original spots when leaving.

No camping or sleeping outside.

Do not use the toilets as garbage cans. Only bodily wastes and toilet paper should enter the toilets. A plunger is available for your use.

Tilt the shower head away from doors when turning on showers so that the spray does not flood the floors when doors are opened. Immediately wipe up any spills on the floors.

Be safe when working with open flames. One medium-sized portable charcoal grill is available, however neither charcoal nor lighter fluid are provided. Do NOT use on windy or high fire danger days. Do NOT use lighter fluid anywhere away from the grill. Do NOT use heat sources other than charcoal, due to the creation of hot ash that can disperse then set fire to surrounding areas.

You may grill either on the driveway or on the deck. Please barbecue away from the house and away from tree branches. Transfer the grills between floors by using the outside back stairs so as not to risk an accident inside the house. Fire extinguishers are located under kitchen sinks.

During periods of bear activity, please turn on the bear alarm and ensure that the radio is at a sufficient volume to be heard on the deck with the doors closed when leaving SquawLodge unattended. The timer is set to operate the white clock radio between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Please double check that the timer is set correctly when going out for the day. Do not leave food in your car as bears will break in. Wipe stove, kitchen counters and the dining table with Pine-Sol to mask odors so that bears do not break into the house.

As a courtesy, guests have access to a bear box for holding trash while at SquawLodge. Two garbage cans within are allotted for guest use. The third is reserved for the cleaners. To prevent odors from attracting bears, enclose your trash within bags before placing them in the garbage cans. Next, tightly seal the lids on each can. Please do not overfill the cans. Finally, check that the door and latch are firmly closed at all times.

Garbage pickup occurs Monday mornings (generally between 9 a.m. and noon). If you depart on Sunday, you may leave trash overnight in the bear box (two cans), for disposal the next day.

Remove all garbage from the premises upon check-out. Any trash that does not fit within the sealed guest usage garbage cans will be removed at a fee of $25 per bag. Additional cleaning time will also be charged at the cleaning company's current hourly fee.

Free amenities such as DirecTV and internet access are not guaranteed. Although we strive to maintain these conveniences for our guests, weather and other reasons may make them unavailable during your stay. Please assist us by informing us of any problem and by working with repair support.

Please respect our home by treating it carefully and letting us know if anything is damaged or is missing so that we can remedy it before your next stay at SquawLodge.

When You Depart:

1. Wash two loads of laundry beginning at least one hour before departure.
a. Remove used flat and fitted bed sheets and pillowcases and place them beside the corresponding bed, on the bedroom floor.
b. Fold the duvet, then leave it on the bed with the pillows.
c. Put used towels and bathroom rugs on the bathroom floor.
d. Sort towels by color.
e. Wash a load of towels first. Reminder: Don't mix light with dark colors (eg. red vs. white).
f. When the cycle ends (approximately 40 minutes), put them into the dryer.
g. Begin a second load washing (towels or if none, king sheets with pillowcases). If you start a load of laundry containing sheets, detail the sheet sizes on a note for the cleaners.
h. You do not need to wait for the second load to finish washing.

2. Wash dirty dishes by first scraping excess food off the items, then placing them in the dishwasher with dishwasher soap and turning it on. You do not need to wait for it to finish.

3. If you moved any items, return them to their original locations or you may be charged a fee for resetting the house. Futons must be in their seating positions.

4. Empty the refrigerator and pantry of your items. Wipe any spills or residue.

5. Wipe stove, counters and dining table. If bears are active, use Pine-Sol.

6. Close the stove gas line by accessing it under the breakfast bar through the small hatch next to the support wall. Turn the bar gently until it is perpendicular to the gas pipe.

7. Outdoor hoses should be disconnected and stored.

8. Check to make sure that no personal items have been left behind at SquawLodge™. We are not responsible for lost or forgotten items.

9. Set all 5 thermostats to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, then press the “Hold" button.

10. Turn on the bear alarm and small white alarm clock radio. Make sure that the bear alarm is facing the outside stairs and boulder and is not being activated by the wireless router. You may need to space them farther apart from each other until only your motion triggers the bear alarm. Plug the radio into the timer. The radio should be tuned to an audible radio station at a sufficient volume to make bears think someone is present. The timer should allow the radio to function between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.

12. At the white board in the garage, please update all categories to current statuses.

13. Close all windows. Lock ground floor windows.

14. Turn off all lights.

15. Close and lock all outside doors. If you are already outside of the house, keyless entry doors require you to input the code, then manually turn the deadbolt. Double check by trying the door knob to open the door:

Six Exit Locations:
Upstairs doors (3)
Garage rear door
Garage door
Front door

16. Remove all waste from the premises when vacating. You may take garbage to the public bins (community dumpsters) located at the Squaw Valley Public Services District (SQVPSD) offices at 1810 Squaw Valley Road farther into the valley. Please make sure the garbage is placed completely inside the dumpster. Never leave anything on the ground outside of the dumpster. Close and securely lock the dumpster before leaving. If your garbage does not fit, please take your garbage away. (Sunday departures may leave trash in the bear box overnight.)

Failure to follow instructions may lead to damage, additional cleaning fees or both—payment for which you are responsible. Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

SquawLodge™ User Profile

Hi! I'm SquawLodge™! I was built over several decades by a hard-working boxer, turned soldier, turned teacher and his engaging secretary, turned daycare provider, turned office manager, wife. He learned to ski in Olympic Valley BEFORE they had the Olympics there and taught his bride-to-be to love flying down the slopes. They hiked and camped all over the Sierra Nevada, sharing the expansive views of the forests and mountain peaks with their friends and family. Now, their children are welcoming everyone to share their parents' love in the home they built with their own hands in the mountains they cherished.
