The space
Built in 1945 our guest house is about 1,000 square feet. With few rooms it feels much larger.
There is lots of storage space and an open feeling in the living room and kitchen.

When I was about 5 years old I decided the rules in my home were unacceptable and I was going to run away. My big sister and her friends were loud and wouldn't let me play with them. Mama helped me pack my suitcase. I was leaving and getting my own house with my own rules.
When I got to the street I knew I could not cross. I went back to the house and asked Mama if I could cross the street. She said, "No" and invited me in for milk and cookies.
No one left our home until 1963 when I was 12 years old and she died leaving me behind. I am so glad I have such fond memories of her.
We bought the property in 1998. Soon we got to know neighbors who told fond stories of the original owners.
We remodeled the old house in the back for rental property . I loved the history of the house. I often thought about my own story. I wanted the house to be that dream home of peace and quiet and my own rules.
The history of the guest house is endearing. It was the original house. It was going to be the servants quarters some day.
The couple moved into the house as soon as it was built and planned on living there while the big house in the front was built. Very soon their dreams were put on hold as War World II broke out and there were no building supplies available.
One disappointment after another kept the young couple from building their dream home.
The lady of the house was so friendly and welcoming there was almost always a guest or two. She loved to have guests.
Children were born and eventually the couple raised 5 children in the small home. Then there were college expenses and children left home one by one until eventually the lady was widowed.
In the 1970's a daughter built the big house in the front and took care of her elderly mother who continued to live in the original house.
We have been told story after story about the kind lady who was never bitter about not being able to build the big house. She was a wonderful host and made everyone feel at home in her small house in the back.
One day the daughter suggested she invite her guests to the daughters house in the front as it was larger. The lady declined. You will never guess why. It was because she wanted her own house with her own rules!
The lady lived many years and passed away in hospice where she continued to have guests to the very end.
We updated the guest house and rented it to college kids and single mothers. But, it never felt right. You see, no one went by my rules. They did not know to appreciate having the peace and quiet the house naturally affords its visitors.
We have such a good experiences renting to short term guests. They all know they are welcome and they all love the house. The guest house is appreciated as it should be!
In 2016 we moved my mother in law into the guest house where she stayed for three years before moving to a nursing home.
We’ve completely remodeled the house. At one time the joke was the toilet sat so close to the tub you could soak your feet in the tub while sitting on the toilet. Well no more!
If you have stayed with us in the past you are going to be pleasantly surprised when you return!

Where you’ll be

Amarillo, Texas, United States

Our neighborhood is part of the history of Amarillo. You will see a blend of very old homes and newer homes built around what was formerly the farm lands of the mansions. Many homes have what was formerly servants quarters.
Most homes have beautiful yards. In the early morning and late after noon on to around 10PM you will see families out walking or individuals jogging and biking.

My husbands name is Steve Stanhope. We attend Washington Avenue Christian Church. We were married 50 years June 19,2020. Where does the time go? Everyone loves the story of the guest house. We live in the historic part of Amarillo. It used to be the "rich neighborhood". What we call the guest house was originally called, "The servants quarters". However, the servants quarters were built by the original owners who moved into the servants quarters with plans of building a grand home for themselves in the future. World War ll broke out and there were no building supplies. The family stayed in the servants quarters and raised 5 children. In the 1970's a daughter of the original owners built a larger home in front and lived there where she cared for her mother who lived the rest of her life in the servants quarters. We bought the property in 1998 and redid the servants quarters into what we once called “The Gate House". We live in the larger home in the front. We recently sold our business , Alpha Lock Amarillo, INC a full service locksmith company. We offered safes and vault sales, service and moving as well. I was president of that company. Now Steve works for VTI Security. He is still a locksmith BUT now he isnt on call 24 hours a day! I am a neuromuscular massage therapist with no plans to retire. After having that business in my home for almost 30 years I have grown close to my clients and hate to let them go. So, I don't. We are like family. We have three children. Our oldest daughter is married to a pastor in Coffeeville, KS and they have three wonderful children. Not to be out done our son lives near us in Amarillo and has four wonderful children and a very special wife. Our third child is a special blessing as she is much younger than the other children. She is 18 , a redhead with lots of energy who plans to join the Air Force. We rented The Gate House for 3 years through Corporate Housing By (Website hidden by Airbnb) and have enjoyed getting to know our guests so much. In 2015 we joined AirBnB. While we don't see them every day we remember they are with us when I cook a pot of red beans and ham with my home made corn bread, or my husband smokes some meat on the smoker. We don't forget to include them. We welcome you to our quiet neighborhood. Like I always say in all our advertisements, "Let us know you are coming. I'll bake you a cake!" Hotel life got ya down? Let us put ya up. It's time to come home now.

During your stay

As soon as you book with us I will be welcoming you by text messaging. We have a Superhost rating because we really care. The house is clean, quiet and ready for you before you come.
I'll ask for a four digit code to put in the door lock. I'll ask about your diet. If you are a vegetarian or need lactaid free milk I really do want to know before you get here.
We respect your privacy. We do not "bother" our guests. You are not pressured to meet us or entertain us. We probably wont meet face to face except talking over the fence or delivering your mail and deliveries.
While the guest house is on our private property we seldom see our long term guests unless they let us know they are home. We are often out on our private patio where we can hear the guests drive up.
When we cook out we often take the guest a plate. We are friendly, and want our guests to feel at home yet we don't have daily interaction with them.
