My house (affectionately dubbed XANADONT) is a quirky little three floor south Philadelphia row home who's permanent residents are myself,my Italian Greyhound Bailey and occasionally my girlfriend Julia.
The house is painted in lovely warm oranges and yellows and is full of Japanese monster toys, action figures, displayed skateboards and art. Some of the art is spooky but the house is so warm and friendly it all balances out!
Your rental fee includes the following amenities:
A private bedroom with a Full bed.
Shared use of the refrigerator/kitchen.
Use of a washer/dryer.
A private washroom (shower no bath tub)
The shower is a tight fight- Low ceiling and not a lot of wiggle room, but it gets the job done.
Free Street Parking.
We are close to a major bus route (one block to the 47N- which gets you into downtown Philadelphia for $2.25 in under 10 minutes) as well as five blocks or so from Target, Ikea, Best Buy and more.
The famous 'Italian Market' is quick walk (10 minutes north) from me- it's known for Charcuterie and Cheese shops, fresh vegetables, an exotic butcher shop (should you need fresh Reindeer meat) and a handful of authentic Mexican restaurants that are out of this world.
Equally close are several delicious Vietnamese Pho houses and Asian Supermarkets that have exotic produce and Asian specialties.
I tend to deny day of reservation requests, so try to get them in early. I work odd hours, so if you try to book day of there may be no one home to prep the room/house. I also usually deny any booking with an uncompleted profile. Photos, verifications, etc. Having guests stay in your home requires a lot of trust, so taking the time to fill out your profile is a great first step in booking.
UPDATE APRIL 11-
The house next door is undergoing refurbishment. They have been starting early (8-9am) and keep changing their date of completion. I'd rather risk losing bookings than have people unable to sleep in, so if you're not going to be getting up early, this may be something to consider. I'll remove this when the project is done. I'm sorry for any inconvenience.
Personally, I sleep right through it! :D
A private bedroom, living room and bathroom (with a small shower) as well as communal use of the kitchen.
Interaction with Guests
Due to my work schedule, it's rare that I meet guests. My girlfriend (and our tiny dog) are more present during stays, and I'm reachable by phone 24-7.
My street is mostly made up of families that own their homes; not a lot of renters so we don't have a constant turnover of neighbors.
We are one block away from two bus pickups- the Northbound 47 bus and the East/West Bound 79.
I'm friendly, clean and respectable, and prefer my guests to be the same.
The house does have a dog (Bailey the Italian Greyhound) who's very affectionate, but isn't fond of other animals, so no pets are allowed. Smoking indoors isn't allowed, but there is a back patio available to smoke on as well as smoking being allowed out front.
We stayed at Shawn's for one night and it was really convenient, location-wise with several places to walk to. There's a separate bathroom and the bedroom is tucked away behind the kitchen; it really felt like we would have had the first floor to ourselves, had Shawn been home. He described it as feeling like you're "crashing with a buddy" and he was absolutely right.
The only warning I would give is for parking- I forgot that Philly itself has really tiny and cramped streets and people just seem to park where ever their car will fit. We came back late at night and couldn't find parking close to the house- it wasn't a problem, but we were tired and just wanted to sleep. If you are able to find a good parking spot, I would just leave the car there for as long as you can and walk everywhere or take a cab!
I have to say, Shawn and Julia have a welcoming, comfortable home! It's exactly as described, easy to find, and a good base camp for exploring South Philly. Parking is a touch on the tight side (I had a little rental car), but if you follow the lead of the neighbors and park slightly on the curb, it's a perfect fit! Thanks for making my first night in Philly comfortable!
We did not meet Shawn, but through messaging and texting he was very welcoming and accomodating. He has a lot of dvds which we didnt have time watch, but was very impressive nonetheless. His street very small and a lot of cars park on the curb. There was no trouble finding parking. If youre looking for a no frills place with a good price, this is for you. If youre a little more high maintenance I would look elsewhere.
Felt very private, we basically had the place to ourselves the whole time. Felt right at home!
Shawn's place is conveniently located between two bus routes, its clean, comfortable, and unique. In case you don't run into him while you're there check out the spots he recommends in the house guide.
My friend and I spent two nigths at Shawn's place and the house is very very nice and it is well located ! You can take the bus easily near the house !
We had the chance to meet Shawn and Julia and Bailey and they are really welcoming and really friendly and we wish we could have stayed a bit longer !
Jess and Mel ! :D
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time staying at Shawn's place. We did not meet Shawn, but he was always available to assist us by text. We did meet his girlfriend, Julia, who was very friendly and helped us work the downstairs TV, although she was mostly out of the way. We definitely felt like we had the place to ourselves for the 3 days we were there.
The room was a bit small but was clean and welcoming and suited our needs just fine--same with the bathroom. We loved the quirky paraphernalia and coloring of the room and bathroom.
The neighborhood is certainly not luxurious, but we were well prepared for that from our knowledge of South Philadelphia. It was walking distance to Passyunk, where we had brunch and shopped around.
We did experience some construction activity next door, but Shawn had warned us about that in advance. He apologized again during our stay, even though it was totally out of his control. We didn't mind but appreciated his consideration!
I started hosting an AirBnB room with the idea of making a little extra money for household expenses. Instead, I’ve been lucky to have hosted dozens of amazing people who share the same love as I do for travel, good times and adventure and have added some new friends to my roster. It’s a strange thing, out of context, to want to stay at a stranger’s house (or to have strangers in yours) but once I started having people from all over the world stay a few nights and share their stories/adventures/personalities with me, it seems to me that I’d be missing out on something really special if I wasn’t a host.
I’m Shawn; I live at the house (Xanadont!) with my wife Julia and our middle-aged and somewhat creepy Italian Greyhound Mr. Bailey Papers. The house is an eclectic fun-land for travelers who’re seeking something a little out of the ordinary. The house is painted warm, happy colors and is filled with Monster toys, lowbrow art and old skateboards, with Bailey casually patrolling to keep us safe from stuffed animals shaped like birds.
I’m not always home when guests are in town, so the house is set up complete with a wifi based lock that can be programmed with a unique access code for every guest, making it where you can come and go as you please without having to worry about a key. Your rental includes a private room, private bathroom (with the world’s tiniest shower; take note tall people) and living room with an offensive amount of DVDs and streaming services to watch.
If you’re going to be in Philadelphia and want a fun, quirky place to rest your head, get in touch. Bailey and I are always glad to have you!
