Quirky South Philadelphia Funhouse!

House - Private room · Cantrell St, Philadelphia, PA 19148, United States

The Space

My house (affectionately dubbed XANADONT) is a quirky little three floor south Philadelphia row home who's permanent residents are myself,my Italian Greyhound Bailey and occasionally my girlfriend Julia.

The house is painted in lovely warm oranges and yellows and is full of Japanese monster toys, action figures, displayed skateboards and art. Some of the art is spooky but the house is so warm and friendly it all balances out!

Your rental fee includes the following amenities:
A private bedroom with a Full bed.
Shared use of the refrigerator/kitchen.
Use of a washer/dryer.
A private washroom (shower no bath tub)
The shower is a tight fight- Low ceiling and not a lot of wiggle room, but it gets the job done.
Free Street Parking.

We are close to a major bus route (one block to the 47N- which gets you into downtown Philadelphia for $2.25 in under 10 minutes) as well as five blocks or so from Target, Ikea, Best Buy and more.

The famous 'Italian Market' is quick walk (10 minutes north) from me- it's known for Charcuterie and Cheese shops, fresh vegetables, an exotic butcher shop (should you need fresh Reindeer meat) and a handful of authentic Mexican restaurants that are out of this world.

Equally close are several delicious Vietnamese Pho houses and Asian Supermarkets that have exotic produce and Asian specialties.

I tend to deny day of reservation requests, so try to get them in early. I work odd hours, so if you try to book day of there may be no one home to prep the room/house. I also usually deny any booking with an uncompleted profile. Photos, verifications, etc. Having guests stay in your home requires a lot of trust, so taking the time to fill out your profile is a great first step in booking.

The house next door is undergoing refurbishment. They have been starting early (8-9am) and keep changing their date of completion. I'd rather risk losing bookings than have people unable to sleep in, so if you're not going to be getting up early, this may be something to consider. I'll remove this when the project is done. I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

Personally, I sleep right through it! :D

Guest Access

A private bedroom, living room and bathroom (with a small shower) as well as communal use of the kitchen.

Interaction with Guests

Due to my work schedule, it's rare that I meet guests. My girlfriend (and our tiny dog) are more present during stays, and I'm reachable by phone 24-7.

The Neighborhood

My street is mostly made up of families that own their homes; not a lot of renters so we don't have a constant turnover of neighbors.

Getting around

We are one block away from two bus pickups- the Northbound 47 bus and the East/West Bound 79.

  • Unfortunately, my fella and I didn't have a chance to meet Shawn due to his work schedule, but we talked briefly with Julia, who is super helpful and friendly. The room was much more spacious than we expected. The bed was pretty large and there was plenty of space for our things since a dresser is included. The blackout curtains are a huge plus too. He left a packet of information that contained everything we'd need to know during our stay. We dug the location because it's similar to the spot where we live in Baltimore, but folks expecting a sanitized version of the city may not be as into it; that said, a 20 minute walk will take 'em there. The house next door was being refurbished so it was a bit noisy in the am, but he gave us a heads up, and we hardly noticed on the first floor.
Shawn has an impressive collection of horror DVDs that we took advantage of during our down time at night in the cozy basement. We'll certainly crash here on our next trip to Philly!

  • Shawn was a great host and very friendly and down to earth. Especially when I spilled tea within the first 10 minutes of my stay. He had a little packet with wifi info, transit info, restaurant recommendations and things to do all typed up and waiting on the bed. His place was a pretty convenient location to get around. Plenty of buses and a train station a 10 minute walk away. The bedroom was really quiet. The number pad entry was really easy to use and a great idea. Him and his girlfriend also have the world's cutest dog!

I would say if you are "high maintenance", this may not be the place for you. There was no outlet (that I could find) in the guest bathroom and no mirror in the guest bedroom, so getting ready for a wedding was a bit of a challenge. However, this would not stop me from staying again when it was a more casual visit to Philadelphia.

  • My boyfriend and I stayed at Shawn's place for one night. Quirky is the right word to describe Shawn's pad - there's an awesome collection of Japanese joys in the living room and the house itself feels like a spaceship (complete with door access code) with a home inside. Our room was great, towels were provided, private bathroom downstairs - wonderful for this price point.

Shawn + Julia + Bailey (I so wanted to meet Bailey the greyhound!!) provided a space heater for us though we didn't have the opportunity to do a meet and greet in person. Xanadont was a great fit for two budget travelers. I do feel a bit compelled to mention that I'm not sure if I would have felt comfortable in this neighborhood walking by myself, especially if I had to come back late at night. If you're careful about being attentive to surroundings and/or use public transportation to get into the center, this may not be an issue.

  • Shawn was very accommodating, the house was easy to find, the room as described, and even bigger than expected. The bed was good and large. My friend and I had access to the kitchen and bathroom downstairs. What was really convenient was the fact that the house was literally a 35-40 minutes walk to the historical center of Philadelphia. You could also take the 47 bus line a few streets away.
Also, Shawn had prepared a little guide of "how to get around the city" which proved very helpful !
The one thing that bothered us slightly was that the house was very cold. Shawn had warned us, but even with the heat on we sometimes had trouble warming up and eventually slept with sweaters on. Same for the bathroom, located downstairs: while we stayed there, it snowed, and taking a shower when it was this cold was not the best part of our stay (water itself was not that warm).

We did not see Shawn much, but for the few minutes we talked I can say he was nice and welcoming (and his dog, Bailey, is just so cute !).
Overall, we had a nice stay there, and I would recommend staying at Shawn's (just bring a big sweater if you'll be there during winter) !

  • Shawn's house is a great place to crash. Clean, easy to get in and out of, and quirky - in a good way! He was super flexible, providing plenty of clean towels, and was generally really mindful of my needs. I'd recommend a stay with him!

  • I was visiting Philadelphia for a convention and decided to spend a few extra days to visit. Since i hadn't planed anything, Shawn's apartment was a great place to set-up base. Wifi worked great, room was comfortable, easy access to the kitchen and a huge selection of movies. Communication with Shawn was effortless and when we actually bumped into each other we ended up talking for over an hour. I will definitely go back to Philly and will definitely contact Shawn! Thanks!

  • Shawn's place was great and we will definitely be going back next time we are in Philly. It was perfect because there was free parking on the street and we were able to walk to a bus to go where we needed. We did ALOT of exploring around the city so were only there to sleep but its nice because you have your own bathroom to use and a TV with netflix and such to relax to even laundry if you need it. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet him because he was working when we were there but I got to meet his girlfriend who was very nice and adorable dog Bailey.

  • Shawn's appartment was perfect! We couldn't meet him because he was very busy this weekend but everything went fine! He replied quickly at my email and text and we didn't have any trouble to get in the appartment.

  • We had a great time in Philadelphia!
It is very easy to communicate with Shawn, he is avaiable via text and you can open the door with a code he provides before your arrival!
The city centre is about 20-25 minutes away by walking. But there is also a bus which gets you there in about 12 minutes or so. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom is fine, too!
Shawn is a nice guy and for the money you make a great day! I would go there again!

  • Shawn's place was perfect.

He left us a code to get into the house and was easily reached by text when we had problems.

We had the private bedroom, basement and a small bathroom in the basement. Shawn had no problem when my friend and I decided to have one of us sleep in the bedroom and the other in the basement so we would have more space.

The bathroom is on the smaller side. You may want to bring your own towels. I'm sure Shawn had some, but he was working a night shift, so we were never in contact with him.

The place is just as he describes - "quirky". Loved his eclectic decor and the handwritten welcome note on the counter had a great doodle on it. Judging from his house, he's the kind of guy I would hang out with!

The neighborhood may seem sketchy at first. I hadn't been to South Philly in 10 years and I remember when anything south of Lombard or Bainbridge was considered "sketchy". However, the neighborhoods have really expanded. His area is a diverse mix of culture, but everyone I saw was friendly and there were plenty of children running about during the daytime. I left my car on 6th St. and had no concerns about it the whole time.

It's very convenient - we walked into Philly. It took about 25 minutes walking to get into Old City (15 or so to reach South Street). He left great instructions on public transit, as well.

Overall, it was a great stay. If you're looking for something different and a real artsy/eclectic place to crash while in town, go for it. He was a great house, his house was clean and inviting, the neighborhood is perfectly safe and the location is amazing for the cost!

I started hosting an AirBnB room last year with the idea of making a little extra money for household expenses. Instead, I’ve been lucky to have hosted dozens of amazing people who share the same love as I do for travel, good times and adventure and have added some new friends to my roster. It’s a strange thing, out of context, to want to stay at a stranger’s house (or to have strangers in yours) but once I started having people from all over the world stay a few nights and share their stories/adventures/personalities with me, it seems to me that I’d be missing out on something really special if I wasn’t a host. I’m Shawn; I live at the house (Xanadont!) with my middle-aged and somewhat creepy Italian Greyhound Mr. Bailey Papers. We’re frequently joined by my Southern Belle of a girlfriend and partner in adventure Julia Darling. The house is an ecclectic fun-land for travelers who’re seeking something a little out of the ordinary. The house is painted warm, happy colors and is filled with Monster toys, lowbrow art and old skateboards, with Bailey casually patrolling to keep us safe from stuffed animals shaped like birds. I’m not always home when guests are in town, so the house is set up complete with a wifi based lock that can be programmed with a unique access code for every guest, making it where you can come and go as you please without having to worry about a key. Your rental includes a private room, private bathroom (with the world’s tiniest shower; take note tall people) and living room with an offensive amount of DVDs and streaming services to watch. If you’re going to be in Philadelphia and want a fun, quirky place to rest your head, get in touch. Bailey and I are always glad to have you!
