1 BR, full bath, living room, in garage apt with separate entrance. Right by Shem Creek and Patriot's Point, at the foot of the Cooper River Bridge. Incredibly convenient location: 4 miles to downtown Charleston, 5 miles to Sullivan's Island and beaches. The TV has broadcast channels, but no cable. WiFi in the apt. Dock, fabulous views from the back porch of Ft Sumter and the ships in the harbor . Refrigerator, coffeemaker, 2-burner hotplate (it's in a drawer in the kitchen), toaster oven, & microwave in the apartment. Breakfast not included, but there will be coffee you can make in the morning, and orange juice, and bagels or English muffins, and butter and jam. Hairdryer is in the bathroom. Iron, steamer, and ironing board are in the closet.
I try to be there when guests arrive, so I can show off the place, but it works out ok if I'm away when they arrive and they let themselves in.
•Lots of people walk up to the top of the Ravenel Bridge; the views are spectacular. It’s about 3/4 mile to the foot of the bridge. Bring a windbreaker, it’s usually windy up there.
This place is so peaceful and quiet, it's like living in the country, but it is literally 10 minutes from the heart of downtown Charleston, and less than that to the beaches. So it's the best of both worlds!
•The back porch is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the view. Take your coffee out there in the mornings, or your wine in the evenings, and make yourselves at home.
•Whole Foods is only a half mile away, and Trader Joe’s is just a little farther past it. And there is a huge Harris Teeter grocery store (it's open 24/7) across the street from Whole Foods. And about a million great restaurants in this town...
•Kayaks: There are 2 kayaks for your use. Please ask where the paddles and the life vests are. You are required to have a life vest and a whistle with you. A cel phone in a waterproof bag could come in handy, hopefully you won't need it. These are basic kayaks, and they are not good for long trips or open water. Please enjoy them in the creek here – at high tide you can paddle all the way up to Coleman Blvd and it is amazingly remote and otherworldly. Herons, Egrets, Ibis, Cormorants, Pelicans, it's wonderful. Or you can paddle out the creek and turn left to go up Shem Creek. You can even stop for a bite to eat or a drink at the restaurants along the creek. Watch out for shrimp boats or long-liners or commercial fishing boats: stay to the edges of the waterway.
• Weather and tides and schedules permitting, I would love to take you out for a short boat ride in my motorboat. Charleston from the water is a whole new experience, always different, always fun… We'll just have to see if we can work it into your trip.
•I have 3 bikes you can use. It's really fun to bike across the little Shem Creek bridge around the old Village, and out to the very pretty Pitt Street bridge park which looks out on the IntraCoastal Waterway and across to Sullivan's Island (about 2 miles to the Pitt St Bridge each way). Or you can ride out on the new Shem Creek Park dock (very close by, less than ½ mile), or head over to Patriot's Point which has a nice bike path and you can ride out to the marina that's right on the harbor. Or if you're intrepid, you can bike over the giant Ravenel bridge. Ask and I'll show the bikes to you and tell you the combinations to the locks. There are 2 helmets for you. Please use them!
You can fish from the dock, and/or catch Blue Crabs. Or you can just enjoy the dock with the Green Herons and the Black Skimmers flying up and down the creek.
Oh, and Patriot's Point golf course is less than a mile away.
Interaction with guests
I do enjoy interacting with guests, but sometimes it just works out that we barely see each other.
Please help us to make a smooth transition for the next incoming guests. Checkout is 12pm if other guests will be arriving on the same day. So please ask, we are flexible when we can be.
This is a very casual, comfortable place to stay. We have a small dog, (7 lbs), and 3 canaries. They don't go into the garage apartment. Sorry, we don't accept pets as guests.
I love the fantastic views from the house which change so dramatically with the daylight and the seasons. Kayaking and motorboating are extra fun here. I have 3 bikes and 2 kayaks that can be used to explore. The wonderful Cooper River bridge is only a 1/2 mile walk from the house. Seafood restaurants also less than a half mile. Fishing and shrimping and crabbing, too, right from the dock. It's like staying in the country, quiet and contemplative, but you are 10 minutes from the high life of the city.
