About This Listing
1 BR, full bath, living room, in garage apt with separate entrance. Right by Shem Creek and Patriot's Point, at the foot of the Cooper River Bridge. Incredibly convenient location: 4 miles to downtown Charleston, 5 miles to Sullivan's Island and beaches. The TV has broadcast channels and a DVD player, but no cable. WiFi in the apt is a little spotty, don't say you weren't warned! Dock, fabulous views of Ft Sumter and the ships in the harbor from the back porch. Refrigerator, coffeemaker, 2-burner hotplate, toaster oven, & microwave in the apartment. Breakfast not included, but there will be coffee you can make in the morning, and orange juice, and bagels or English muffins, and butter and jam. Hairdryer is in the bathroom. Iron, steamer, and ironing board are in the closet.
I try to be there when guests arrive, so I can show off the place, but it works out ok if I'm away when they arrive and they let themselves in.
•The dock has a bench out at the end of it and you are welcome to walk on out there. It is an old dock, though, and the boards are a bit loose, so watch your step.
•Lots of people walk up to the top of the Ravenel Bridge; the views are spectacular. It’s about 3/4 mile to the foot of the bridge. Bring a windbreaker, it’s usually windy up there.
This place is so peaceful and quiet, it's like living in the country, but it is literally 10 minutes from the heart of downtown Charleston, and less than that to the beaches. So it's the best of both worlds!
•The back porch is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the view. Take your coffee out there in the mornings, or your wine in the evenings, and make yourselves at home.
•Whole Foods is only a half mile away, and Trader Joe’s is just a little farther past it. And there is a huge Harris Teeter grocery store across the street from Whole Foods. And about a million great restaurants in this town...
•Kayaks: There are 2 kayaks for your use: the big yellow/red one and the little blue one. Please ask where the paddles and the life vests are. You are required to have a life vest and a whistle with you. A cel phone in a waterproof bag could come in handy, hopefully you won’t need it. These are basic kayaks, and they are not good for long trips or open water. Please enjoy them in the creek here – at high tide you can paddle all the way up to Coleman Blvd and it is amazingly remote and otherworldly. Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, it’s wonderful. Or you can paddle out the creek and turn left to go up Shem Creek. You can even stop for a bite to eat or a drink at the restaurants along the creek. Watch out for shrimp boats or long-liners or commercial fishing boats: stay to the edges of the waterway.
•Weather and tides and schedules permitting, I would love to take you out for a short boat ride in my little Boston Whaler. Charleston from the water is a whole new experience, always different, always fun… We’ll just have to see if we can work it into your trip.
•I have 3 bikes you can use. It is really fun to bike across the little Shem Creek bridge around the old Village, and out to the very pretty Pitt Street bridge park which looks out on the IntraCoastal Waterway and across to Sullivan’s Island (about 2 miles to the Pitt St Bridge each way). Or you can ride out on the new Shem Creek Park Dock (very close by, less than ½ mile), or head over to Patriot’s Point which has a nice bike path and you can ride out to the marina that’s right on the harbor. Or if you’re intrepid, you can bike over the giant Ravenel bridge. Ask and I’ll show the bikes to you and tell you the combinations to the locks. There are 2 helmets for you. Please use them!
NEWS FLASH! I HAVE A STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD YOU CAN USE! (Just one, though-you can rent them nearby). You can fish from the dock, and/or catch Blue Crabs. Or you can just enjoy the dock with the Green Herons and the Black Skimmers flying up and down the creek.
Oh, and Patriot's Point golf course is less than a mile away.
Interaction with Guests
I do enjoy interacting with guests, but sometimes it just works out that we barely see each other.
The best part about this place is the delightful and relaxing back deck, with comfortable chairs and a fantastic view of the giant container ships and the sailboats and shrimp boats and you can see Fort Sumter and Castle Pinckney and Fort Johnson (which is now a marine lab) and Crab Bank and Patriots Point and Shem Creek and oh, I could go on and on about the birds and the otters and the Diamond-backed Terrapins but thankfully no alligators in our creek!
Public transit is not very good in Charleston, to put it mildly. There's a Water Taxi service from Patriot's Point to downtown Charleston that you can bike over to. I have 3 bikes that can be used (not fancy), and they can go on the Water Taxi so you can explore Historic Charleston by bike, which is really fun. But to enjoy all Charleston has to offer, from the historic district to the beaches to the plantations, you really need to have a car. That said, it's an easy walk from the apartment to a Starbucks, also Shem Creek restaurants and Shem Creek Park.
Please help us to make a smooth transition for the next incoming guests. Checkout is 12pm if other guests will be arriving on the same day. So please ask, we are flexible when we can be.
This is a very casual, comfortable place to stay. We have a small dog, (7 lbs), and 3 canaries. They don't go into the garage apartment.
This was the perfect place to stay for a weekend getaway in Charleston. The BEST part is he beautiful back porch overlooking the dock and beautiful water. Be absolutely sure to wake up early enough to enjoy breakfast and coffee on the dock or porch!!
Susan was so wonderful and welcoming, and her home is just gorgeous. We went kayaking in the creek, and spend mornings and evenings sitting on the beautiful back porch listening to the birds, and even met her adorable little dog. The location is wonderful -- a 5 or 10 minute ride to downtown or the beach. We would definitely stay here again!
We had great time staying at this house. The location is excellent, the room exceeded our expectations. There are many things to do, the kayaking alone gives an excellent view to the harbor and to the seabird sanctuary. Biking to the bridge is another great activity, the bridge is very close and you don't have to drive through any busy streets. Both downtown Charleston and Isle of Palms beach are very close.
Overall, highly recommended.
Host had great communication, complete with email pictures, since she wouldn't be there when we arrived. Location is perfect with a quick drive to many restaurants, Patriots Point, downtown Charleston, Sullivan's Is., IOP, and Folly Island. Sadly, we didn't use the bikes nor kayaks, but the view from the deck is just lovely. We didn't sleep well and had to purchase pillows so we could sleep the next 3 nights, and the mattress sagged toward the middle. Bathroom toilet and sink could have used a better cleaning before arrival. I wouldn't let these items keep me from staying again, and if there were a new mattress and pillows, I would give it 5*****!
This was the most amazing experience for booking a place to stay on any vacation we have ever had. Susan was an amazing host, around enough that you could get some inside tips of charleston and have some good chats, but hands off enough to not be intrusive.
She offered us a ride on her boat through the harbor, and it was the best part of the trip. We saw dolphins, got great views of the sunset, and got to hang out with Susan herself (and she is a blast!)
This is an experience you will never get with a random hotel or lodge. The kayaks she had available let you explore the area on water, and were all included. You really got the feeling you were staying with family!
Her deck is amazing, and the views are spectacular. We have been to Charleston before, and we would prefer to stay in the mount pleasent area over being downtown. Less stress, more laid back, and minutes to the beach, downtown, and tons of shopping for my wife.
The icing on the cake was the book she got my wife after hearing about her west virginia river roots (unfortunately she already had it.)
Susan, thank you for an amazing time. We love your place, You're an amazing person, and wish you the best. Hopefully well stop by again on our travels.
This was an amazing find on airbnb. The host was very welcoming. She made us feel right at home and was accessible when we had any questions. It was a great deal for a cute apartment right on the marsh, close to downtown and mt pleasant beaches. Very spacious, nice bathroom, great kitchenette. Extremely quiet and peaceful. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Very relaxing visit at Susan's. Our son enjoyed the paddle board and we loved being able to walk around to Susan's deck with our wine in the evening and our coffee the next morning. Everything we needed was either on hand or a quick drive to a number of restaurants or markets. Super great communication from Susan both before and during our stay.
About the Host, Susan
I love the fantastic views from the house which change so dramatically with the daylight and the seasons. Kayaking and motorboating are extra fun here. I do have 3 bikes and 2 kayaks, and 1 StandUp Paddleboard (SUP) that can be used to explore. The wonderful Cooper River bridge is only a 1/2 mile walk from the house. Seafood restaurants also less than a half mile. Fishing and shrimping and crabbing, too, right from the dock. It's like staying in the country, quiet and contemplative, but you are 10 minutes from the high life of the city.
