The Space

1 BR, full bath, living room, in garage apt with separate entrance. Right by Shem Creek and Patriot's Point, at the foot of the Cooper River Bridge. Incredibly convenient location: 4 miles to downtown Charleston, 5 miles to Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms beaches. TV has broadcast channels and a DVD player, but no cable. WiFi in the apt is a little spotty, don't say you weren't warned! Dock, fabulous views of Ft Sumter and the ships in the harbor from the back porch. Refrigerator, coffeemaker, microwave in the apartment (no cooktop or oven). Breakfast not included, but there will be coffee you can make in the morning, and orange juice, and bagels or English muffins, and butter and jam. Hairdryer is in the bathroom. Iron, steamer, ironing board available. Easy walk to a Starbucks, also Shem Creek restaurants and Waterfront Park. There's a Water Taxi service from Shem Creek to Patriot's Point to downtown Charleston. I have 3 bikes that can be used (not fancy), and they can go on the Water Taxi so you can explore Historic Charleston by bike. I have 2 small kayaks for guests to use to explore the creek. NEWS FLASH! I HAVE A STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD YOU CAN USE! You can fish from the dock, and/or catch Blue Crabs. Or you can just enjoy the dock with the Green Herons and the Black Skimmers flying up and down the creek. Dolphins and Brown Pelicans, too, of course. Weather and tides permitting, I love to take people out for a boat ride in my little Boston Whaler. Stand-Up Paddleboard rentals available right nearby. Oh, and Patriot's Point golf course is less than a mile away, along with the Yorktown.
p.s. Bring your camera :)

Guest Access

The best part about this place is the delightful and relaxing back deck, with comfortable chairs and a fantastic view of the giant container ships and the sailboats and shrimp boats and long-liners and Ft Sumter and Castle Pinckney and Ft Johnson (which is now a marine lab) and Crab Bank and Patriots Point and Shem Creek and oh, I could go on and on about the birds and the otters and the Diamond-backed Terrapins but thankfully no alligators in our creek!

Interaction with Guests

I try to be there when guests arrive, so I can show off the place, but it works out ok if they arrive and let themselves in. I do enjoy interacting with guests, but sometimes it just works out that we barely see each other. When schedules and tides allow, I like to take guests out on the water in my little boat Catnip, but mostly they just take the kayaks out on their own.

The Neighborhood

This place is so peaceful and quiet, it's like living in the country, but it is literally ten minutes from the heart of downtown Charleston, and less than that to the beaches. So it's the best of both worlds!

Getting around

Public transit is not very good in Charleston. There is a water taxi to downtown that you can bike over to, and then ride bikes around the city which is really fun. But to enjoy all Charleston has to offer, from the historic district to the beaches to the plantations, you need to have a car.

Other Things to Note

•The back porch (email hidden) to relax and enjoy the view. Take your coffee out there in the mornings, or your wine in the evenings, and make yourselves at home. 
•The dock has a bench out at the end of it and you are welcome to walk on out there. It is an old dock, though, and the boards are a bit loose, so watch your step.
•Kayaks: There are 2 kayaks for your use: the big yellow/red one and the little blue one. Please ask where the paddles and the life vests are. You are required to have a life vest and a whistle with you. A cel phone in a waterproof bag could come in handy, hopefully you won’t need it. These are basic kayaks, and they are not good for long trips or open water. Please enjoy them in the creek here – at high tide you can paddle all the way up to Coleman Blvd and it is amazingly remote and otherworldly. Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, it’s wonderful. Or you can paddle out the creek and turn left to go up Shem Creek. You can even stop for a bite to eat or a drink at the restaurants along the creek. Watch out for shrimp boats or long-liners or commercial fishing boats: stay to the edges of the waterway.
•Weather and tides and schedules permitting, I would love to take you out for a short boat ride in my little Boston Whaler. Charleston from the water is a whole new experience, always different, always fun… We’ll just have to see if we can work it into your trip.
•I have 2 bikes you can use. It is really fun to bike across the little Shem Creek bridge around the old Village, and out to the very pretty Pitt Street bridge park which looks out on the IntraCoastal Waterway and across to Sullivan’s Island (about 2 miles to the Pitt St Bridge each way). Or you can ride out on the new Town Dock on this side of Shem Creek (very close by, less than ½ mile), or head over to Patriot’s Point which has a nice bike path and you can ride out to the marina that’s right on the harbor, or if you’re intrepid, you can bike over the giant Ravenel bridge. Ask and I’ll show the bikes to you and tell you the combinations to the locks. There are 2 helmets for you. Please use them!

•Lots of people walk up to the top of the Ravenel Bridge; the views are spectacular. It’s about 3/4 mile to the foot of the bridge. Bring a windbreaker, it’s usually windy up there.

•Whole Foods is only a half mile away, and Trader Joe’s is just a little farther past it. And there is a huge Harris Teeter grocery store across the street from Whole Foods.

  • Charleston locals who needed a quick hometown vacation spot. Staying downtown is always nice but not as relaxing. This is a great little place to get away, right on the creek. Bike riding or walking distance to several local restaurants, whole foods, seafood market, but tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. Easy to get to downtown as well by car, or you could just walk or ride over the bridge. Plenty to do or not to do, your choice.....Hanging out on the dock during the sunset is highly recommended.

  • We had a wonderful time in Charleston! Susan's apartment is cozy and private. One of the coolest parts of our trip was the incredible boat ride that Susan took us on...we stumbled upon several dolphins just a few feet from us! Kayaking and biking were awesome as well! Great location and great host!!!

  • Great stay. The views you see in the pics posted is just around the corner of the home. The owner shares her porch for you to enjoy at your leisure which is nice. We hardly used our car while there. Mostly walked and biked where we wanted to go. Very convenient location. We would stay again :)

    Response from Susan:

Thank you for letting me know in this private way, Brooke. I will try to be sure to have the apt cleaned more thoroughly when I'm away. Thank you for leaving the ring. The previous guests had asked me to look for it, so now i will send it back to them.

  • We had a wonderful time staying with Susan! First of all, Susan is extremely accommodating and welcoming. Susan was always on hand to provide beach towels, an iron, or local advice. She even offered to take us out on her boat (next time!). She invited us to spend time on her back porch which has an incredible view of marsh and water. The pictures don't do the view justice!

The apartment was spacious, clean, and temperature controlled. Also, while not right in the downtown area, it was a quick cab ride away. We also biked into the downtown area on bikes Susan provided. The property is also right near Shem Creek which is where a lot of the shrimp boats are as well as several restaurants.

Overall, this was a fantastic experience, and I would highly recommend it if you are staying in the Charleston area for a few days! Thank you, Susan!

  • We had a wonderful time staying with Susan. She (email hidden), greeting us and making us feel at home -- even though we arrived after midnight due to a late flight. Southern hospitality indeed!

The room was like out own private apartment. Very quiet and clean and the local craft beer she left in the fridge for us was a nice touch. We enjoyed bike riding to the nearby ferry as well. You can take it straight into Charleston if you don't feel like driving.

There's a beautiful pier surrounded by marsh lands which is ideal for stargazing and relaxing. The view was stunning. We also enjoyed relaxing on the spacious deck overlooking the bay.

This is (email hidden) and we can't wait to return.

  • We traveled to Charleston for a quick getaway and Susan's place was perfect. Close to downtown, an amazing view overlooking the harbor. Unfortunately didn't have much time to spend there, but we did get to hang out at the end of the dock in the evening and enjoyed the peaceful serenity of the night. Wish we had more time to enjoy the other perks but I'm sure we will be back. Thanks again Susan.

  • What a gem this place is! It's located in a quiet bayside suburb, just across the bridge from Charleston. The gorgeous views and peaceful atmosphere were a welcome respite from tourist crowds of downtown Charleston.

We wished we had time to take advantage of the kayaks and bikes that Susan generously offered for guests to use.

If you're looking for a fussy B&B where details are everything, this isn't it. Susan was incredibly down to earth, gracious, and generous with her time and home.

  • This is the perfect base in which to get the most of both worlds--city and water (website hidden). Mount Pleasant is a lovely area and you can reach Sullivan's Island fairly quickly which is a beautiful locale to enjoy the ocean & beach. A water taxi from Patriot's Point Park is a great way to be transported to historic Charleston. Susan (email hidden) and makes you feel like a friend visiting her.

About
I love to enjoy the fantastic views from the house which change so dramatically with the daylight and the seasons. Kayaking and motorboating are extra fun here. I do have 2 bikes and 2 kayaks that can be used to explore. The wonderful Cooper River bridge is only a 1/2 mile walk from the house. Seafood restaurants also less than a half (website hidden) and shrimping and crabbing, too, right from the dock. It's like staying in the country, quiet and contemplative, but you are 10 minutes from the high life of the city.
