Sid has been a great host. He checked with us regularly to make sure we're comfortable and replied our questions promptly.
The unit and amenities are exactly as described. The unit is a block and a half away from the subway station and only a few stops away from midtown ("A" train is your best friend).
The neighbourhood was very alive and full of character (with many great cafes).
Sidney's place was exactly what I expected, a cozy one bedroom apartment, on the first floor of the building and very close to a subway station. Me and my dad stayed there for a week, with no inconveniences at all.
The apartment has everything anyone could need, except for a microwave, but we really didn't need it that much. Sidney was there on time to check us in and give us quick directions about everything. He even was attentive enough to leave us the coffee maker ready, and provide us with directions of the nearest super market and phone numbers of taxi services, which was very helpful.
Overall, we had a good time and left very pleased.
This comfortable first floor apartment is just 30mins away from Times Square via the subway. Neighbourhood is a very safe and quiet spot in Harlem. We go back often late at night and has never felt unsafe. Sid has everything included (except toiletries) to make us feel instantly comfortable and even bought us a new coffee machine when I accidentally broke the lid of his old one! A communicative and helpful host, indeed. I would definitely book with Sid should I visit NYC again！
Sid, is a great host. He helped us with tips and even some cash for the taxi when we arrived (don't take this as a general service :-) )
The location is also good since it is very close to the A/B/C/D lines on 145th street and enough shops/restaurants nearby.
All in all a comfortable stay for 2 persons during a week.
What a sweet place to stay! Sidney was very helpful and accommodating and the apartment was clean and tidy. The neighborhood is pretty quiet and is really convenient to the subway. We will be back!
Sidney was great with communication prior to visiting and although he was not in town when we arrived, his wife Lisa was able to get us the keys. The flat itself was basic although suitable for a short stay. The flat is also very convenient for the subway (one block away).
This was our first experience with airbnb. I was in town for a conference at Columbia on Friday, and then the family came in for the (long) weekend. We really didn't relish the idea of spending $300 per night to stay in Manhattan, or staying out in the outer boroughs. Sid responded quickly to our initial request, as well as to my questions about the location and neighborhood. He was waiting for me when I arrived and gave me some good advice about places to eat in the neighborhood. We didn't see him or his family after the first night, but didn't really need to.
The place was nice; a one-bedroom basement apartment, close to the subway, within walking distance to Columbia, with a coffee shop, a couple of delis, and several restaurants nearby. The kitchen is fully appointed (though in the end we didn't use it much; a pity, as there were some interesting cookbooks in the apartment). The kids slept in the pullout beds in the living room while we slept in the bedroom; everyone was comfortable and slept well. The TV only works with DVDs, but for us that was an advantage. Also, free high speed internet helps. The walk down to Columbia was nice; I wish I'd had more times to check out the parks (there's a lot of natural beauty in Manhattan if you know where to look).
Someone in another review I read complained that it was more than two stops on the subway to midtown; I can only imagine that they took the local train. It's two stops on the express (and always on the D train). There's a cool fruit stand that sets up outside of the subway.
Bonus: check out Sid's music here: http://(email hidden)/thesidwhelanband. Nice modern update of traditional blues.

My goal is to provide a private, safe, clean, convenient, inexpensive, comfortable, well-appointed and well-designed property for the traveler or the local person in need of temporary furnished housing. I am available when needed but I do not intrude on my guests. In addition to being an AIRBNB host and property owner in both New York and Vermont, I am a real estate agent by professsion and have a passion for matching people with properties. I am a lifelong New York City resident and know the City well - ask me for tips. I speak enough French and Spanish to assist travelers in those languages if need be. English is my primary language. I am a culinary enthusiast. Also I am a guitarist and love many kinds of music. I have recently re-started my music career so if you're interested you can check out Sid Whelan Band on Bandcamp, (website hidden), (website hidden) or Reverbnation. My band is inspired by roots American music form before 1960, primarily blues but also folk, country, tin pan alley, jazz, early rock'n'roll and Broadway.
I like to run and have joined New York Road Runners. I know some good routes in the area for runners.
