Large, light-filled bottom level flat: The beauty of this place is LOCATION 50' from the Russian River and 1/2 mile to town. Rough wood floors w throw rugs; wet bar; bunk beds and sofa bed in 1st bedroom, walk thru to queen futon in 2nd bedroom.

The Space

Light and airy, rustic spacious flat featuring redwood wet bar, large dining area, 2 bedrooms and full bath. Floors are painted plywood with oriental rugs. The home is only a stone's throw away from the beautiful Russian River, 1/2 mile upstream from Johnson's beach in Guerneville. Armstrong Redwoods and several world-class Sonoma Co. wineries are within biking distance. Designed to be dog friendly, the flat is especially ideal for families or a couple plus their single friends.

Your space: the entire first floor of a 2-story home, with views of the river. Your backyard is a sunny grass area ringed by willows, alders and fruit trees The redwoods across the river add some shade and provide homes for a variety of birds - which early risers can view from your private riverside patio porch swing. There is a gas bbq. and table for riverside picinicking.

Your living area: a large dining/entertainment room equipped with TV monitor, and dvd/vhs players (+ wifi). Sunlight floods your breakfast table dining most mornings by 8:30 am....or enjoy board games or a poker party around this 6' round table (seats 10!)

Your kitchen AREA: an elegant wet bar with 2000 yr. old heartwood Redwood slab counters, this area is equipped with blender, coffee maker, bean grinder, microwave, bar sink, and mini fridge (Please note: no stove;no indoor cooking.)

The bathroom is a full bath with shower/tub.
Bedroom #1 is extra large (13' x 15') with a plush oriental rug, 2 single bunk beds, and a full sofa bed. It is designed to be a sitting room/lounge area, or a "bunkroom" for kids/extra single guests.
Bedroom # 2 is the master bedroom. It is standard size, with a futon bed (full size) The entrance to this back bedroom is a full-length, sound and light insulated curtain (vs. a permanent door.)

Bedding and bath towels are included;bring your own beach towels Let's be sure we connect a day or so before your stay so I can set you up with some custom breakfast supplies; you will want to "laze around a bit" here on the river.

This is a home designed for recreation in nature, for happy people activites...not just on the water but on land too... like horseshoes and frisbee, or just sitting on the double swing checking out the early morning herons and osprey fishing while you sip coffee.

I live upstairs with my 2 cats. I will be honored to direct you to the "hot spots" of Sonoma County that only us "natives" can share. Come escape (only 1.5 hours drive from the Bay Area) to my little piece of paradise!

Guest Access

wi-fi, DVD/VCR player and screen, bbq in back yard...For extended stays or with pre-arrangement, (so I can spiff it up :)host's unit kitchen with standard stove and oven are available.

Interaction with Guests

We share an entrance hall; I live in the upstairs portion. I am often gone during the day but like to meet, greet, then give you as much privacy as you would like. My policy is to stay available (by text, phone or in person) during your stay at my home.

The Neighborhood

I have a very sunny location with lots of redwoods across the river and other shade trees. By June 15, the temporary dams are in, allowing for lots of fun interaction with people enjoying the river by boat or float.. One can retreat to the flat or be part of the friendly recreating group on the river. There is always something going on 1/2 mile away in town and the ocean beach is just 20 min. drive so the weather choices and nearby hike/bike/swim opportunities are rich. It is in the heart of the RR wine country for winery explorers as well.

Getting around

Don't count on public transit. There is space to park 3 cars in front of the unit. Summer can bring traffic congestion on River Road, especially Friday nights. Using 116 might be a better alternative depending on the day. It's handy and fun to have a bike to access town. Be sure to ask your host about back roads to circumvent traffic- especially if checking in on a Friday between 2 and 6pm or on a holiday weekend.

Other Things to Note

Please do not expect to cook in the unit. I am usually happy to share my fully equipped kitchen in my flat upstairs but need some heads up at time of reservation if your heart is set on that.. Most people find the breakfast bar adequate for breakfast, snacks, drinks but please read the description of how the kitchen is equipped.

  • If you’re looking for 5-star luxury accommodations, keep looking. If, instead, you’re looking for the true Guerneville / Russian River experience, look no further. This place is perfect. So is your host, Suz Mayo.

The house has two stories with a common entrance / hallway. The guest quarters consist of the entire lower floor, with French doors that close it off from the hallway and ensure your privacy. Suz lives on the upper floor, along with her two cats. Suz is one-of-a-kind, an absolute gem. Her overriding goal is to make sure that you enjoy your stay at her home.

The guest quarters are very large and comfortable, and look directly out to the Russian River – not a “peak view”, but a full on view -- which is about 50 feet away. There’s a large yard behind the house that leads directly to the River. There’s a dock so that getting in and out of the River is easy. A bench, a BBQ grill and horseshoe posts are among the yard's other features, with water toys (floats, kayaks, etc) available for your use at no charge. The shops, bars and restaurants in downtown Guerneville are within easy walking distance.

The place has a charming, cabin feel. It provides the ultimate Russian River experience. It’s my kind of camping – indoors, with virtually every modern convenience that you could want. Although it does not have a full stove, the kitchen is fully stocked and includes a coffee maker and grinder, a junior refrigerator and a nice microwave. The floors are rough, painted wood, which avoids any need for you to clean up after a day at the River before entering the house, and makes it perfect for pets. Although the house is right on River Road, we didn’t find it noisy. Indeed its location makes it quite convenient. There’s plenty of free parking to boot.

Suz loves pets and welcomes them, but please advise her ahead of time that you're bringing your pets. That allows her to make arrangements to keep her cats safe and out of the way. We brought Melba, our Goldendoodle puppy, and there were no issues.

Please be sure to read the house rules and the property description before booking. The few criticisms that show up in the other reviews are largely attributable to the reviewer not having done so.

Suz respects your privacy and will not impose herself on you. She will make herself available, however, to give you any information you’d want regarding the property, Guerneville and the Russian River.

Suz made us feel at home, and we’ll be forever grateful. We needed a break from The City, and she gave us a magical weekend. Scott, Melba and I look forward to returning there.

  • The house was great with river access and grill in the yard. As stated in the description, the rooms are separated by a curtain. But it was great for me and my friends!

  • My family enjoyed staying with Suz on the Russian River. The entire floor of the home was very large and comfortable with a view directly of the river. Suz was very nice and helpful, picking up coffee, local bread- which we loved!, organic bananas, popcorn, and a cupcake! We found the location fantastic for exploring local wineries, the nearby redwood forest, and the coast. Suz gave us great advice on local dining and area highlights. We truly enjoyed our stay with Suz! Thank you!!

  • Suz (email hidden) to me and my four friends. The place is cozy and right on the river. It was the perfect retreat for a weekend away from the city. We will definitely be back again!

Thank you Suz for taking the time out to chat with us and make sure we were doing alright!

  • Suz was great! Decided last minute to stay there and felt very welcomed and was very accommodating with our last minute request. The fact it was walking distance to town was the big plus. Didn't need more than a comfortable bed to sleep on (which it was) so I can't speak for other amenities provided and whether it would fit others' needs.

  • Suz (email hidden), she personally greeted us and gave us a tour of not only the place, but also showed us her place and took us down to the river despite it being pitch black and freezing outside!

She also stocked the kitchen with snacks, which was really above and beyond!

This place was perfect for our group of 4 adult friends. These weren't issues for us, but some guests might find this useful:
    - The house is right on the main road, and you can hear cars passing at most times
    - The bedrooms are separated by a curtain
    - The second queen bed is a pullout couch, and comfort is consistent with that of a pullout couch

But here are some great things you might also find useful:
    - The backyard literally IS the Russian river, you can walk right down to it.
    - The house was nice and toasty and plenty of hot water even though it was chilly outside
    - Our small dog was a welcome guest, and loved walking around the backyard and the river

  • We were looking (email hidden) to get away with our dogs for a few days and Suz's house was the perfect place for us. It is quirky and full of history. It sits right on the river and is just a short walk from the cute town of Guerneville. The unit we stayed in is the bottom floor of the house where Suz lives upstairs. The floors are rough, painted wood, covered with rugs where it counts. This was perfect for us because we could let our dogs play without worry. It was a totally relaxing visit.

Suz is an amazing host. She loves dogs and played with ours any chance she got. She also loves people, and we enjoyed talking with her. She went to every effort to make our stay positive, stocking the mini-fridge with thoughtful staples and recommending a beautiful hike we could take our dogs on with us. Our comfort and enjoyment was clearly important to her.

We will definitely be returning for another visit!

  • Suz was very welcoming and accommodating. She (email hidden) to stay, with plenty of room for the six of us. There wasn't a lot of privacy between rooms, but there was plenty of hot water and towels for us, a convenient location, accessible river front, thoughtful supplies (coffee and bananas!), and all for a good price. Thanks Suz!

  • We were so grateful to find a place to stay last minute on Labor Day weekend, and Suz was impressively responsive.

Suz was very welcoming and clearly very invested in ensuring we enjoyed our stay. In the morning she left us fresh fruit and cream for our coffee and let us borrow her bike helmet and left us a nice thank you note upon our departure.

The place was clean and as described (the fellow who was upset about the floor material and lawn maintenance seemed a little over the top), but the smaller bedroom was indeed just a bed, really, and no closet space is available. The two bedrooms are indeed separated by a curtain, the smaller one accessed through the larger. The larger has two twin beds and a futon foldout, described as "really comfortable," so i think our expectations might have been a bit inflated. It was fine for a couple of nights, though.

It should be clear that there is only one entrance to the house; the entrance hallway opens to the stairs leading up to Suz's part of the house, and a french door closes off the rental portion of the house.

The backyard goes right up to the water with a lovely bench to sit on, which was wonderful! Bring your bathing suits.

Upon arrival, Suz spent some time showing us the house, including some dog gates, as we were heading for a dinner that evening. We left for our dinner and opted to leave the dog in the bathroom as we normally do when we travel with him. When we returned, she had left a note indicating that she heard him whining and thus gone to visit him, and she asked that we keep him with us for the rest of our stay (on the back of a printout of the house rules with that same request highlighted). We were a little surprised, as we could not imagine a scenario of employing dog gates while we were in the house and assumed she was telling us about them in the context of the dinner we planned to attend. As a result, we were forced to leave the dog in the car with the windows cracked when we went to (and rushed through) dinner the following night rather than with his bed and water in the house, which was a bummer.

Thus, it bears mentioning that the arrangement with the host living directly above and, as the above indicates, keeping an eye on us, left us feeling a bit "chaperoned" during the stay.

We found it a bit pricey for the offering but assume that was a result of the holiday weekend, as the billed rate is much lower than what we paid.

Nonetheless, I reiterate that we were very grateful to find this place and found Suz quite hospitable. This would (email hidden) for a single couple or family to stay without a pet.

I am a teacher (2-adult), naturalist and a Sonoma County native. I travel widely; love meeting other travellers...In fact, I often work with ESL students so i can travel "vicariously." My two cats are quite independent but i dearly miss having a dog and to tell you the truth, this place needs more dog visitors to ward off the racoons! I'm as quiet as my cats and just as independent. Even though I love my river home, I work out of town and often like to "get away" myself... I continue to perfect my hosting after the first very successful year. If you don't love your stay for any reason, I am happy and usually able to do what it takes to "make it so." ...either during or afterwards; just let me know. I do look forward to meeting you!
