Experience NOLA's True Mystique....

House - Private room · Annunciation Street, New Orleans, LA 70130, United States

Stay in a Home instead of a Hotel for the convenience of the city with the serenity of the river's edge....

If you walk out the front door to the right, you are Uptown with all it's splendor, & if you walk to the left, you experience Downtown!

The Space

Greetings! Brandi and Greg here - New Orleans and Minneapolis natives, respectively - we are both owners of our unique house, which we open up to those who want a home, not a hotel.

ABOUT THE HOUSE & ROOM:
We have a Private Room on the second floor in our restored 1880's Victorian home.

While it is not most grand room offered in the house, it has many charms with 12' ceilings, fireplace, ceiling fan, wood floors, lovely light from 3 windows overlooking the courtyard located in the 9 Muses section of the Lower Garden District.

It is one of the *most convenient* spots in the city.

The room itself is complete with fresh sheets on a pillow top Double Bed, two 1960's vintage arm chairs, an Underwood typewriter for keeping in touch, a coffee table, WiFi and closet space.

As a cooperative house, the bathing and cooking facilities are European-style, *shared*; however, the house is quite large and you may feel like you have the place to yourself.

There are two full bathrooms available on the lower level. The main bathroom for the lower level has a separate shower and tub. The other (usually used by this room's guests) has a combination claw foot tub with shower.

This bathroom contains the laundry facilities which you are welcome to use. In addition you are welcome to either of the two full kitchens – one on each floor.

Although the house was not flooded it was restored by its two on-site owners shortly after Hurricane Katrina as a cooperative, eclectic home of artists, musicians, filmmakers, writers, photographers and designers busy in the Nola community. It is a large house with a rich history as being at one time the New Orleans Maternity Home for Unwed Mothers.

We have friendly dogs and an indoor and outdoor cat.

AREA FEATURES:
Many restaurants, bars and coffee shops are just blocks away, such as Annunciation, Cochon, Butcher, Emeril's Delmonico, Emeril's, Eleven Seventy-Nine, Commander's Palace, American Sector, Maya Latin Cuisine, Miyako Sushi & Hibachi, Irish House, Surrey's, Blue Plate Cafe, Mojo Coffee, Bridge Lounge, Circle Bar, Avenue Pub, Juan's Flying Burrito and Slice Pizza among many others.

Museums: The WWII Museum, Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Contemporary Art Center are a close 5 minute walk as is the gallery rich, Julia Street Arts District.

Live Music: Howlin' Wolf, The Republic, Tipitina's, The House of Blues and the Rusty Nail are easy access to live music and Frenchman St. is just on the other side of the French Quarter.

The Superdome (Saints) and New Orleans Arena (Hornets) are a 20 minute walk from our front door.

Shopping is convenient with the Shops at Canal Place, Riverwalk, and Magazine Street all within short walking distance.
__________

We welcome like-minded people who want to enjoy our cultural city, enjoy the wrap around porch from where you can watch the carriages clippity-clop by on their way to the Quarter, or perhaps lazily swing in the hammock by the pond under the bougainvillea in the tropical courtyard.

Guest Access

The common areas of the house - living room with the piano, kitchen, the courtyard (hammock, pond, breakfast bistro area), front porch, etc.

Interaction with Guests

We are only here to enhance your experience. My partner and I are actively involved in our businesses (art, graphic design & music) and we understand there is nothing more annoying than an overeager host (wink), so we will not be in your way.
We will do our very best to make your stay charming!

The Neighborhood

I love the diversity of the people and the splendid architecture! It isn't completely gentrified yet, even though it is the most convenient neighborhood in the city.

Getting around

LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION:
We are centrally located in New Orleans, just off the Mississippi River near Coliseum Square. It is 4 blocks from historic St. Charles Avenue, the Convention Center/River, as well as the Mardi Gras Parades and a short 15 minute walk through the Warehouse District to the French Quarter.

One of the best ways to get around New Orleans is on a bike. Street Parking is available and the Bus Stop is on the corner.

The St. Charles Streetcar line (a few blocks away) can take you Uptown to the Garden District, Carrollton, Tulane and Loyola Universities, and the Audubon Zoo and connects on Canal Street to the Marigny, City Park and the City Park cemeteries. Cruise Ship terminals are a few blocks away. We're only 20 minutes from the airport.

Cabs at the airport are a flat rate starting at $35. Shuttles are around $22.

Other Things to Note

Staying in someone's Home is always an interesting experience; we have some splendid spaces in our antique house, which is much like the city - forward thinking with deep ties to the past.

Basically, we want you to feel comfortable and leave Nola charged with a positive vibe....

Cheers!
Brandi and Greg

  • My stay with Brandi and Greg was excellent. They have a very lovely unique home with cute friendly pets. Its in a great location close to everything but still quiet and pleasant. I could come and go as I please, the room was perfectly suitable and I very much enjoyed my stay. Brandi and Greg were terrific hosts.

  • Brandi has very nice and cozy place. My girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay very much.

  • The house was is located perfectly between the French Quarter and the Garden District. We were able to walk to all of the sights we wanted to see and do in the Garden District and Magazine St. Bikes were also available. We drove 5 minutes to the French Quarter to experience the nightlife and felt that was pretty painless. The room is quirky and the house is eccentrically decorated. I felt like I saw something new to stare at each time I entered a room. Definitely an art project in itself! We left the windows of our room open and the curtain closed the entire time and we needed the fan on to be comfortable. I could see needing an extra fan during the hotter summer days. It was perfect for spring. Because the two bathrooms are shared with housemates and another guest room, I felt like I needed to make my bathroom trips short and infrequent, but there was never an actual issue. At least one bathroom was always available.

Brandi was there to greet us and very welcoming. I loved having the pets around!

We ate at Cochon for dinner #1, Surrey's Cafe for breakfast #1, Dat Dog (get the alligator dog) for lunch, Cafe Du Monde for a snack, had hurricane slushies on Bourbon St, a late night calzone from Magazine Pizza for dinner #2, and the most amazingly fancy and affordable donuts & coffee from District Donuts for breakfast #2. I recommend them all!

Go see some burlesque and get lost exploring! We had a wonderful time.

    Thanks, Brandi!

  • Fantastic and mindblowingly comfortable space in a lovely home in a safe neighborhood with graciously accommodating hosts. Brandi has excellent taste, so be sure to check out her recommendations (Surrey's, Cochon, Mojo, etc.) and scrounge for treasures at the nearby Bridge House thrift store. It was somewhat out of the way from where I needed to be (that's on me for having no knowledge of the city beforehand) but a nice 20-25 minute walk never hurt anyone.

    March 2014
  • We stayed at Brandi's for only a night as I was attending a conference at the Convention Centre and all the nearby hotels were fully booked. It is conveniently located near the Convention Centre- takes about 15 minutes to walk there and there was a huge bonus for me. One step into the house and you will know that Brandi is an artist as lots of beautiful paintings and artwork adorn the place.
Brandi has been helpful with regards to our questions. The washroom and shower is located on the first floor though so it was a tad troublesome for the boyfriend who had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

  • Great host, lovely house, cute pets! Sadly I had no time to get any closer contact with my hosts or the other guests, but I really enjoyed the stay and teh proximity to the convention center.
Will consider staying there again if a trip to NOLA is required.

  • We had a very nice stay in the house, nice chatting with Greg, and we could use the bikes, which were very convenient to visit New Orelans and the French quarter.

    March 2014
  • Brandi's house was such a special gem of a find. Wandering around the house was like engaging in an Easter egg hunt--everywhere you turned, there were small surprises of art and whimsy that reflects the creative spirit of the house! The lodging itself was exactly as pictured and described, and one is only a 15 minute walk away from the French Quarter. Brandi was such a gracious host and was very prompt to respond or reply to any inquiry or question that I had. I would certainly recommend any independent traveler stay here and will likely return to Brandi's when next I travel to New Orleans!

    March 2014
  • Brandi and Greg were responsive, detailed with information and very welcoming. Their place is central for people looking to explore several neighborhoods in the city. I especially appreciated their creativity and unique home-highly recommend staying at their place.

    February 2014
  • This was a great place to stay, innumerable number of things to do within moderate walking distance. The dogs and cats were very friendly! Everything regarding the reservation went smoothly. I'd book it again on my next trip to New Orleans.

About
Greg, my business partner, and I own and live in an artistic Victorian home in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans - a neighborhood with great diversity. We are positioned conveniently between Uptown and Downtown living. I am more than happy to answer questions you may have about the city and try to have the city's weekly cultural guides available for you. I suggest going to searching gambitweekly and noladefender. Oh and Nola dot....(they hide sites) We have a grand old house, complete with a relaxing parlor (complete with vinyl records), front porch, courtyard, pond, raised gardens, hammock... We are walking distance to the Art District, French Quarter, Street Car Line, Convention Center, Cruise Ships, Uptown and beyond. I love meeting new people with an artistic or cultural passion and I adore the city from which I hail (and want you to, too!). I even worked in Historic Architectural Preservation for several years before pursuing my art. I have my art studio here and my business partner is a graphic designer and musician. We restored the home from an almost blighted state to it's historic grandeur - uncovering 13 foot coved ceilings and original plaster medallions. We both split our time living here, with other like-minded people, and travelling. I work as a found object artist designing Jewelry and Assemblage. If you are interested, you can find more about my work and house by looking up The Waregarden Studio. I love traveling; I have been to Europe several times but can't wait to carry the adventures further. I have lived between Nola, Houston and New York. I adore classic films and art, in its many forms. Oh - they ask for a motto. Well, I guess it is have a well-meaning heart and treat others as you would like to be (email hidden)d maybe follow the rabbit hole if that's what calls to you! Ciao for now! B
