  • Lots of info to share from our 3-day stay:
    1. Ethel and Barry and Luna (dog) are wonderful hosts. Great conversations with them, about architecture and TV and other topics. They are very helpful; they were very responsive to us when we needed A/C in the room (portable unit) or when we asked that the loud TV (which was on the other side of our bedroom wall--not the best place for it--be turned down.
    2. The location was perfect for us--just up the hill from our daughter's place in Over-The-Rhine.
    3. There is a reason they show the across-the-street PARK in the photo, and not the house: You need to know that the house may be in renovation, but after 2 years of ownership the house still needs a ton of it. The dining room will be pretty once it's done--nice overhead beams and pretty wainscoting. We were told the kitchen's under renovation, but the guests don't usually see that and from what I noticed not much has been done in there. The exterior is really dilapidated; Barry said that some who rent simply drive away once they drive up and see it. The master bedroom is well appointed; not fancy but comfortable and it has a side room that's useful. The bath is shared by the whole house (not just by the other bedroom that's for rent), and while it has a new and pretty sink and toilet, the tub and walls are old, stained, chipped, etc. All the windows in bedroom and bath are nailed shut, which bothered me, as I like fresh air and because the house seemed too warm to me most of our stay (but in the bedroom they brought us a portable A/C unit, which was great). There's no insulation in the interior walls so you'll hear everything downstairs if the A/C unit is off.
    4. The n'hood is a mix- some very run-down places, and many wonderfully rehabbed old homes. We parked on the street and there seemed to be at least a small level of risk in that, but the car was fine.
    5. Breakfasts are home-cooked and quite good, and they joined us for some fantastic conversation. I just wish the house were further along in the renovations. I love the hosts but probably won't go back until the renovations are further along. Not up to usual airbnb standards, currently, at least based on the airbnb places we've stayed at so far. Compared to the dozens of B&Bs we've stayed at, this house's overall "finished quality" level would be very far down at the bottom, and that includes the few places at which we've stayed where the places were also under renovation. All in all, it's probably wrong to be renting this place now. The rates are lower, however, probably to reflect that, so you'll need to make your own decision.

  • Ethel and Barry were lovely! We booked less than 24 hours before our arrival and also brought a dog; they were more than happy to accommodate. We stayed in the larger room with the sitting area suite - it was perfect. We will definitely return.

  • I spent four nights at Ethel and Barry's while attending an educational summit. I had early mornings and wasn't able to enjoy the breakfasts that other reviewers praised, however, they were thoughtful enough to leave out food and coffee so that I didn't have to try and grab something on my way in the morning. They have a very friendly dog (Luna) and a nice house with character. The weather was frigid the first couple days of my trip but I stayed plenty warm in my room. The shower had good hot water. If you need a place to stay in Cincinnati and want to avoid the overpriced run-of-the-mill hotels/motels and enjoy the company of nice folks, I recommend it.

  • If you (email hidden) online it looks like you would be staying in a nice big hotel. But it's not. It is a house that is being remodeled. It is nothing like the pictures show it. The room is just like the pictures, but that is just it. I stayed there in October and yes it was chilly/ cold. The only heat we had was an electric blank. You had to share a bathroom with one other person that was staying in the other room. We couldn't even lock our room door. There were no curtains on the windows, I couldn't wait to leave. I'm sorry, but where I could not lock the door I did not feel safe, and being that I didn't feel safe I did not get very much sleep because I was scared that someone was going to come in our room. In my opinion, if I had to stay there again, I would go somewhere else.
