My BNB was originally named after my beloved dachshund Earnest who passed away in early January 2013. He loved to meet new people and have them in our home and I strive to stay true to that memory by providing the best experience I can for my guests. Jasper is already proving to love meeting new people and will be helping me fulfill Earnest's memory as we host our guests from around the world.
Guest have full access to the apartment, including use of refrigerator and cooking in the kitchen if desired. There is a coffee machine set-up in the guest room for use whenever desired. Because the guest room is on the smaller side, I encourage guests to use the living room area to relax, watch tv, etc. whenever they are back in the apartment.
Interaction with Guests
I live in the apartment full-time with my dog Jasper. I tend to be home most evenings. I am happy to hang out and chat with guests as much as they like or give them more privacy if desired. I am very easy going and am happy to follow the guests lead.
The Lower East Side is a great neighborhood with a wide variety of people from all different walks of life. Within close proximity is a wealth of restaurants, clubs, bars, etc. My block is quieter, without as many bars or clubs which I prefer as it is possible to avoid the crowds on busy night and weekends. The neighborhood is very safe, with lots of people around and I have never had any problems in the over 14 years I have lived here. None of my guest have had any problems in the over 3 years that I have been hosting on Airbnb.
One of my favorite local sites is The Tenement Museum. An old apartment building that is now used for tours to show what life was like in this neighborhood in the early part of the last century. It is a great way to get some history on this neighborhood and compare that to what it is like today.
My apartment is located a 5-7 minute walk from the nearest subway/metro station. From that station it is easy to get to any part of the city, Brooklyn and Queens using the trains available at that station or with one easy connection to another train.
There is a lot of street parking nearby. I've only had a few guests with cars over the years but they have all had success finding a spot nearby without having to pay for parking.
There are many options for getting to my apartment from the three nearby airports. Once the booking is made and the guest sends me their arrival plans I provide detailed directions and maps to make it as easy as possible to travel into the city.
I'm very easy going but do have a few rules...
No smoking at all in the apartment.
No additional guests without prior notification.
Please be sure to properly lock the door when coming and going. (Should be obvious, but...)
You are welcome to use the kitchen, but please clean up afterwards.
Please help me recycle - I can show you where to put paper and bottles/cans/etc.
Lost keys will incur a $50 charge.
I stayed in David's apartment for five nights and had a wonderful time. David was always very welcoming and helpful if I ever had questions and he provided very detailed directions to find the place when I first arrived.
The apartment is well located in the Lower East Side neighbourhood meaning your just a short walk away from some great restaurants including Russ & Daughters and Katz Deli. Also very conveniently located for public transport with a metro station just a couple of minutes walk.
I can't recommend this place enough, definitely worth staying here - and you'll have an amazingly friendly dog for company!
David was there to greet me at the exact time agreed to. He had a nice cozy apartment and the neighborhood was fine. I was able to park on the street for the entire time without a problem. I would recommend staying with David to anyone.
We stayed in David's lovely apartment for four days in April. Despite being away he made us feel very welcome, providing everything we needed and making arrangements for us to find our way and collect the keys. The flat is really homely and in a great area, a perfect base for a trip to NYC. We'll be back!
David was very welcoming. Fresh banana bread prepared upon my arrival. Smelled wonderful. He was very welcoming but also respected my privacy. The neighborhood is typical lower east side Manhattan. Real neighborhood bars and restaurants, not overrun with brand names (Starbucks, etc.). Walking through the neighborhood, I felt like I was on the set of All in the Family or Welcome Back Cottar. The space was clean, well cared for, and well decorated. When I come back for my annual trip, I will try to book in here again.
"The Dappled Dachshund" was the ideal lodging for my recent trip to New York. David is a kind, conscientious, and extremely accommodating host. In addition to providing all necessary amenities, he made excellent dining recommendations, shared interesting details about life in the dynamic East Village, and fashioned a warm and comfortable living environment. (Also, due to a delayed flight, I did not arrive until around 2:00 a.m., and he remained completely unflustered and inviting!) Jasper, of course, is an adorable companion, who made sure that all affairs were in order! I will definitely make arrangements with David and Jasper when I return to the city.
About the Host, David
I'm David and I have lived in this apartment for over 15 years. I recently ended a 10+ year career working in the New York theatre. I am now a Program Administrator at a new company that teaches children how to build and create using real tools and materials.
I became an Airbnb host because when I travel to other countries I want the experience of living like a local and have stayed in people apartments for that purpose and to save on travel costs. I am pleased to offer that to travelers coming to New York and work very hard to make my guests stay as comfortable and easy as possible.
I also love food and cooking and can offer suggestions on restaurants you will enjoy in the city and provide homemade treats like banana bread for breakfast and ice cream for dessert whenever possible.
Thanks for reading and I hope I will have a chance to host you very soon!
