My BNB was originally named after my beloved dachshund Earnest who passed away in early January 2013. He loved to meet new people and have them in our home and I strive to stay true to that memory by providing the best experience I can for my guests. Jasper is already proving to love meeting new people and will be helping me fulfill Earnest's memory as we host our guests from around the world.

Best wishes,

Guest Access

Guest have full access to the apartment, including use of refrigerator and cooking in the kitchen if desired. There is a coffee machine set-up in the guest room for use whenever desired. Because the guest room is on the smaller side, I encourage guests to use the living room area to relax, watch tv, etc. whenever they are back in the apartment.

Interaction with Guests

I live in the apartment full-time with my dog Jasper. I tend to be home most evenings. I am happy to hang out and chat with guests as much as they like or give them more privacy if desired. I am very easy going and am happy to follow the guests lead.

The Neighborhood

The Lower East Side is a great neighborhood with a wide variety of people from all different walks of life. Within close proximity is a wealth of restaurants, clubs, bars, etc. My block is quieter, without as many bars or clubs which I prefer as it is possible to avoid the crowds on busy night and weekends. The neighborhood is very safe, with lots of people around and I have never had any problems in the over 14 years I have lived here. None of my guest have had any problems in the over 3 years that I have been hosting on Airbnb.

One of my favorite local sites is The Tenement Museum. An old apartment building that is now used for tours to show what life was like in this neighborhood in the early part of the last century. It is a great way to get some history on this neighborhood and compare that to what it is like today.

Getting around

My apartment is located a 5-7 minute walk from the nearest subway/metro station. From that station it is easy to get to any part of the city, Brooklyn and Queens using the trains available at that station or with one easy connection to another train.

There is a lot of street parking nearby. I've only had a few guests with cars over the years but they have all had success finding a spot nearby without having to pay for parking.

There are many options for getting to my apartment from the three nearby airports. Once the booking is made and the guest sends me their arrival plans I provide detailed directions and maps to make it as easy as possible to travel into the city.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • David and his delightful Jasper were such great hosts. We found the apartment clean and comfortable and enjoyed its easy walking distance to both the subway and many local restaurants. David was extremely helpful with local advice and we enjoyed many conversations about New York and life in general. I would absolutely stay with David and Jasper upon returning to Manhattan and will be recommending the listing to any visiting friends.

  • David was out of town while we were staying in his apartment, but he arranged for a neighbor to be available to give us his key, which went seamlessly. His apartment was spotless and very pleasant, and in a great location close to lots of bars, restaurants and great coffee shops as well as very accessible for the sightseeing trips. I would definitely recommend The Dappled Dachshund and hopefully next time we come we will be able to meet David and his dappled Dachshund.

  • We had a great time at David's apartment. Pity he wasn't there himself, but it was really good, he had it all perfectly arranged. We strongly recomment it and will return there for our next visit, because we liked New York very much. It is the perfect location for a visit of the city: close to the metrostation and nice restaurants in the neighborhood. And the quick glimpse we had of Jasper when we collected the key was also adorable dog. Thank you David!!

  • Great experience at David's LES apartment. I wasn't around much but felt welcomed when I returned "home" to his clean and well appointed place. The bed was comfy, wifi fast, and host(s) hospitable. The area is super: check out The Black Cat for cappuccino and a croissant, Essex Market for a unqiue shopping/dining experience and Tiny's Giant for a late night sandwich. I'd stay there again.

  • David's place was the perfect base for exploring Manhattan, especially with the really cool East Village on his doorstep. His place is very neat and clean with everything you could need, and David was such a brilliant host, full of recommendations and tips for our visit. Anytime we go back to New York we'll certainly be giving him a call, and we'd recommend him highly as a great host for your New York explorations.

  • David and Jasper, thank you for being the perfect hosts. Your welcome and warmth made my NY experience of the lower east side complete. David's attention to detail like in room coffee machine and tips on things to do and ways to get around helped me feel just like a local. The area feels surprisingly safe and quiet for downtown. The funky bars on Rivington St were a wonderful way to finish a day out with only 500yards to travel home. Definitely check out the tenements museum - a brilliant insight to the history of the area. A wonderful start to my AirBNB experience all around. Thank you David and big hug for Jasper.

  • I loved staying at David's place. The bedroom is small but it has plenty of space because there is a little cupboard in which to hang clothes . It's close to the subway and lots of things are within walking distance. LOVED the coffee machine in the bedroom. Jasper is adorable. David was very helpful with directions and since we got into town very late (bus was cancelled due to weather) and had to go straight to a rehearsal dinner, he even dropped off the keys to the apt at the restaurant. by the end of four days there, I felt a little like I lived there which was wonderful for me. Thanks David!

  • My visit at the Dappled Dachshund was lovely. The space is exactly as described and David and Jasper were welcoming and friendly. David was so helpful with my myriad of questions about why it's like to live in the city. The lower east side is an awesome place to see NYC, with lots of restaurants, cafés and bars within walking distance. The subway entrance is just a quick few blocks from the apartment. I have no qualms recommending them to anyone looking for a cozy, quiet place to stay in manhattan. Thanks guys!

  • David and Jasper are great hosts! Very friendly and great with communication.
He was very attentive and helpful in making my trip a great one, offering to hold onto my belongings so I could roam unburdened before leaving town.

David had some great insights and recommended some nice restaurants and sights to see while I was in town and I was not disappointed.
The bundle of maps and guidebooks was helpful to peruse and the town guide magazine he picked up had a great slice of trendy and new spots to hit.
I had never been to the LES before and it was a really relaxed and safe neighborhood to stroll around in and easy to navigate.

The room and apartment was clean, warm and the bed super comfortable after a long day of travelling. Jasper is adorable and very loving right off the bat, eager to welcome every guest :)

  • The Dappled Dachshund (the place) is a convenient comfortable stay on the Lower Eastside. The DD (the dog) is very cute and friendly. David is a very kind and considerate host. I was especially happy about the fastidiously clean bathroom and good shower. Would happily stay here again.

Costume Design Assistant
Hi, I'm David and I have lived in this apartment for over 14 years. I work as an Assistant to a Tony Award winning costume designer - working on Broadway plays and musicals and operas at the Met Opera and other theaters and opera companies around the world. I became an Airbnb host because when I travel to other countries I want the experience of living like a local and have stayed in people apartments for that purpose and to save on travel costs. I am pleased to offer that to travelers coming to New York and work very hard to make my guests stay as comfortable and easy as possible. I also love food and cooking and can offer suggestions on restaurants you will enjoy in the city and provide homemade treats like banana bread for breakfast and ice cream for dessert whenever possible. Since I work in the theatre I am happy to give help and advice on shows you might be interested in seeing and ways to get discounted tickets. Thanks for reading and I hope i will have a chance to host you very soon!
