About this listing
A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
A+++! None of the excellent reviews before exaggerate the tiniest bit! Pete and Eva are magnificent hosts with a spectacular place to spend the night or maybe even longer! They are a beautiful couple who literally make you feel like king and queen in their castle. Everything is impeccably clean, kitchen well equipped, futon bed beyond comfortable and the atmosphere...priceless. More important than the castle itself, however, are Pete and Eva! We could have listened to their stories right until dawn...told with so much passion and devotion. We would have loved to stay longer and hopefully will be back some day!
Extremely welcoming, wonderful people, beautiful home, and overall just one word: spellbinding
Peter was a fantastic host. He was so very welcoming and generous with his time and knowledge. Our visit with him and a stay his castle at greatly enriched our trip to beautiful Ireland. It is a stop not to be missed.
Peter and Eva were fantastic hosts! What a wonderful experience to stay in a castle...but what added to the experience was the understanding of the passion and love put into the castle restoration. Peter is a very interesting guy to talk to and his thirst for information and knowledge is contagious. Eva is a kind, gentle person who was very welcoming and shared some stories with us. The castle was right out of a romance novel and the ambience was lovely. Thank you Peter and Eva for truly unique experience!
Pete was very friendly. The castle was a fun unique experience. You can definitely see the passion he has for his castle in the work he has done. We only had enough time to stay one night, but did enjoy our time there.
This was our first night in Ireland and it was a great experience! We had to change our schedule to arrive later than planned, then got lost on our way, but Pete went way out of his way to help us navigate in, even coming down to meet us in town so we could follow him back up to the castle. We thoroughly enjoyed his stories about the history of the castle, and the process he has been going through over the years to renovate it. A truly amazing place to stay, I wish we had more time to spend there. Pete was a very hospitable host and went out of his way to make us comfortable and feel very welcome. We would stay here again in a heartbeat, and would very much recommend staying here to anyone coming to Ireland for a visit.
About the Host, Peter
I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
