The space

A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.

This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.

Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room, kitchen , bath and your master bedroom

Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.

The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.

Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.

What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.

This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.

You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)

I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.

Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. Now this is not a hotel or a prison and we do have cobwebs and a little dust so if you are expecting a pristine five star hotel then go to one , This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.

Our stay at the castle was near the end of our family trip to Ireland and it was definitely the highlight of our vacation. My 8 and 6 year old daughters were thrilled with the castle and surrounding gardens, and my husband and I loved the castle and the wonderful hospitality of Peter and Eva. We cannot say enough good things about Pete's castle!

Our stay at Peter's Castle was magnificent. I only wish it could have been longer. Peter and his wife Eva were great hosts, we are so happy to have met them. The Castle is so impressive... Plus we slept so comfortably, and there was everything we could have ever wanted for a proper breakfast in the morning! My husband and I will be staying again in the future for certain, and we highly recommend others stay here!!

Peter's castle did not disappoint. He was a graciou host, taking time to show us around and give us the history of the structure. The area is beautiful, and he has done amazing work updating the castle. If you want a 5 star hotel, stay elsewhere. But if you want a unique experience that brings all the necessities (a bed, a bathroom, a kitchen, etc) then give the castle a try!

One night ( or also some more) at this wonderful castle - it's like a dream came true. Peter and Eva were wonderful hosts. The castle is great - we (4 persons) were really impressed! We have learnt many things about living in a medieval castle. All the ideas of Peter for Restauration in modern convenience are wonderful and sometimes really funny! We all felt very well! And we we will come back you can expect a lot of surprises in Peters castle!

If you are in the Galway area or even if you weren't planning to be, staying at Pete's Castle is a MUST! This place is absolutely amazing! Everything about the stay was a once in a life time opportunity and I am so glad we did it. Pete and his family were so warm and inviting, we even got to see something else special as a bonus and that memory we will always cherish. They will answer any and all questions you have. There were four adults and one 8 year old which the castle accommodated just fine. A word of caution as the stairs are plentiful so my parents in their later 60's only did the stairs up once a day which was fine for them as their were so many pictures and books to look at to keep them busy. If you are looking for something truly unique this is the place for you. We wish we would have booked more days there. We hope to be back some day and get to spend more time with this lovely family and their home (castle). Thank you Pete, Eva and the boys for making our first trip to Ireland one we will never forget.

This is hands down the most wonderful stay we experienced in ireland! Pete has really put his heart and soul into restoring this castle to its former glory! If you choose to stay here, give yourself a few days to enjoy! We only had a reservation for one evening and it wasn't enough! The beds were comfy, the ambiance with the fire places in each of the rooms could simply not be beat, there is space in the yard for kids to play, and even a trampoline! The Panoramic view from the roof of the castle was breathtaking! If there is availability to book this property, do not hesitate! It's the best!

Peter User ProfilePeter is a superhost.

I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
