A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
Peter was the most welcoming host. Inviting us in right away and making us coffee. We could have listened to his stories all night. The castle was so charming. The most interesting place we have ever stayed.
Ok, so .. I did some trip in my life ... but this one ... THIS ONE was A-MA-ZING.
The place itself is incredible. It is so cosy and resting. Everything is though, home and love made by Peter. The place is even better than on the pictures.
You should do whatever it take to goes to the castle!
Peter and Eva are the persons you want to meet, they will have some stories to tell you, they will teach you something and share dreams with you.
On my 2 weeks in Ireland, that was the best experience I had ! Thanks you again so much Peter and Eva!
The place is amazing, but it's the people we will miss. We had a wonderful night there and left the next day feeling like we were leaving friends. The castle is a truly a work of art, and we were honored to meet the artist.
If you are looking for a stay which will stay with you forever as a unique travelling experience, this is the place to go. The castle is a home and made to be so with lots of things made with love and care and its owner, Pete, made our stay even more cosier by sharing his stories and making fire for us. Lovely hospitable place, the true highlight of our short trip to Ireland! Will certainly recommend!
Peter was wonderful and we enjoyed him greatly. He had lots of information on the area and suggestions about where we could best spend our limited time.
The castle was great and I would not have enjoyed myself as much in Galway had I not stayed at Peter's castle.
This stay will not disappoint. Worth every penny for the experience and for meeting Pete and Eva. The night we stayed at the castle was a top highlight from our trip around Ireland. Pete went out of his way to make sure we were settled and comfortable. Would definitely recommend!
An amazing experience. Peter went out of his way to make sure we had everything my fiance and I needed to enjoy what truly is a step back in time.
P.S. The archery lesson in the morning was a nice little surprise as well.
I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
