Description

The space

A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.

This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.

Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room, kitchen , bath and your master bedroom

Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.

The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.

Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.

What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.

This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.

You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)

I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.

Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. Now this is not a hotel or a prison and we do have cobwebs and a little dust so if you are expecting a pristine five star hotel then go to one , This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay with Pete and Ava at their castle. They were friendly hosts and Pete shared the history of his restorations. I would recommend this stay!

This castle stay was an extraordinary opportunity. The effort and skill and passion that Peter has poured into renovating this castle shows, from the stone carvings to the modern kitchen tastefully hidden within a wooden cupboard to the in-floor bathtub. Our payment bought us much more than an overnight stay, we got to share in the experience of one man's decades long project. I can not recommend this experience highly enough!

Pete and his castle are a MUST to experience in Ireland! The castle was built in the 1400's and he's done all the renovations himself! Just an incredible experience to stay in a medieval castle. Thank you Pete for being so gracious and kind to our group and accommodating us. What an Easter morning in front of your castle!

Pete's castle is everything you could hope for. When you arrive you find yourself in front of a proper castle, set in Irish farmlands. Peter and Eva were great hosts. Gracious with their time, advice and stories. Nothing was too much for them. The castle's two top floors are lovingly furnished. The place is really comfortable. There is a large living area and a fully kitted out kitchen. The beds are super comfortable. There are fires to keep you warm and while the castle has lots of light there are candles at night that give it amazing ambiance. The food in the local pub is terrific. It only takes about 30 minutes to get to Galway. So if you are up for a really unique get away I highly recommend Pete's castle!

How many listings in AirBnB are castles? How many of them are hosted by amazingly friendly people that will greet you with a smile, share stories with you, let you know about Galway, and will invite you to their parties? The intersection of these two sets is has just one element. Pete's castle! Key word: castle! Everything about this place was 5 stars. Thanks Pete and Eva!

Peter User ProfilePeter is a superhost.

I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
