A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
I honestly could not think of enough positive ways to describe the experience of staying here aside from saying from start to finish it was absolutely perfect. We (myself and my girlfriend) were made to feel welcome at the very beginning and believe me the castle itself is entirely faithful to the pictures posted but much more impressive when you are there. Peter and Eva are fantastic hosts, charming, polite, genuine, kind, thoughtful and have countless stories to tell both about themselves and the castle itself. They are also interested in you and where you have come from and enjoy hearing your stories as well.
The amount of work Peter has put into the castle is simply astonishing and a credit to himself and his character. Make sure you take a look at the before and after pictures to really grasp the magnitude of his accomplishment and the breathtaking attention to detail. It really is the perfect place just to relax and soak up the atmosphere - it's not everyday you get to sleep in a castle. I would recommend venturing to the roof at night as on a clear night the views of the stars are amazing.
If you are feeling a little more adventurous the surrounding area is a lovely area to go for a walk and the nearest town has a bar and restaurant if you would like to get out (although I don't know why anyone would want to leave). Alternatively you can ask Peter to show you his archery bows and test your skills out.
As amazing as this castle looks I assure your expectations will be surpassed and you will not want to leave when the time for checkout comes. I would whole heartedly recommend a stay at Peter's castle and would just like to extend another heartfelt thank you to Peter and Eva for their hospitality. It truly was an experience we will never forget and we will hold on to the memories forever (or at least until we decide we want to book again!).
Staying in Peter's Castle (and meeting Pete and Eva) are the kind of unique experiences that keep us coming back to AirBnB. We never expected to have the opportunity to stay overnight in an actual, real 15th century castle but Pete and Eva were nice enough to share their home with us. After many of the memories of this trip through Ireland begin to fade a little, our evening in the castle will continue to stand out. The castle (which is amazing) is surprisingly only a co-star to the hosts. Pete and Eva showed us friendship and generosity from the moment we stepped out of our car. So much warmth and honesty and humor and storytelling. This is truly an experience not to be missed.
It is hard to put into words how wonderful our experience here was. The castle isn't just a lovely home, it is a standing work of art and a perfect example of the amazing things passion and determination can produce. Pete and Eva are two truly inspirational people and we consider ourselves lucky to have met them. They welcomed us like old friends, shared stories with us over tea, and made us feel at home in every way possible. If you have the opportunity to stay here, even just for a night, you will never forget it.
Staying at Peter's Castle has been an amazing experience! Meeting him and Eva has been a great pleasure, listening to the genesis of the castle and all the stories behind it was so nice. The welcome has been warm, they made us feel at home. Every corner of the castle is a surprise, every word of Peter a story. A great pleasure staying with them, strongly recommend
Our stay with Peter and Eva was fantastic. We stayed one night at the castle and felt very welcome the moment we arrived. The castle itself is beautiful and well cared for. Peter is incredibly talented as is his whole family!
We spent lots of time talking with Pete learning about the history of the castle and generally enjoying each others company.
Pete even gave us an archery lesson during our stay! We would definitely return!
This is a second time that we return to Peter's castle and is always a pleasure to come back. Peter is an amazing story teller and a fantastic host who makes our experience a real Airbnb experience. The castle is amazing and magic and Peter makes everything for us to feel at home. Will definitely come back :-) Thank you for being an amazing host!
This castle is AMAZING!! We stay here for a night during our honeymoon and wish we would have stayed longer. Peter is a wonderful host and full of great stories. He was very welcoming the moment we pulled up. He even let my fiancé do some archery. The amount of work he has done to the castle is impressive. We will forever remember this once in a lifetime opportunity! I HIGHLY recommend staying here if you get the chance!
I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
