About this listing
A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
Truly unique...amazing experience. Peter and Ava invite you into their world.
Nothing is a problem to them to ensure your stay is truly memorable. You are treated like royalty and its THEIR Castle.
Their generosity include ample provisions for a hearty breakfast to start your day.
Would have to be a highlight in anyones travels.
What can you say? It's a castle!!! I love my very short stay. What really made it great for me was that Peter came in and we chatted for a couple of hours about the castle, adventures we'd both been on, etc. It instantly felt like catching up with an old friend. Being able to spend time in such an historical setting with someone who has put their pure love into the place was amazing! Thank you Peter!
We were welcomed in person and shown around the castle; renovation was well explained. The area is very quiet and pleasant, we especially liked this. We had not expected a kitchen so that was a bonus.
It was a great experience to stay at Peter's Castle. His restoration of this old beauty is simply amazing, very talented. The Castle is charming. Our quarters were well appointed. Hosting was perfect, Peter and family give you privacy and space, but are there if you need something. I could go on and on but one word describes our stay Excellent!
There are a few things on my "to do befor i die" list, sleep in a castle was one of them. After Peter accepted my intend, we placed the whole Holidays around that Night. The little Family will welcome you very warm Hearted. We Had a Look around and saw a lot of things we Had questions about. After that Peter told us his life story and you have to consider, he does that every day! And oh My good he is a great storyteller!!!
When you are intersted in castles you will find countless Books which you can read while taking a bath ;)
And one importent sentence he told me "After the bath, go upstairs, light the candles and the fire, that does wonders" and it did;). What a unforgetable athmosphere.
We will keep the castle and Family in good memory and can recommend this Place with all our Heart.
It was incredible.
Peter was an amazing individual who goes the extra lengths to ensure you enjoy your experience.
If you stay here, make sure you do at least 2 nights. 1 just isn't enough
About the Host, Peter
I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
