About This Listing
A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
Staying in Pete's Castle was great! He and Eva were very accommodating and kind. Pete popped by to share his story of how he acquired the castle and how much he has done with renovations; very cool! Stovetop/fridge available for food prep, wood stove is also available, but temp is not regulated so it takes a bit longer. Be prepared for an awesome experience with quite a few stairs(but it is a castle after all!)
This is really an experience. Staying in a castle is a very different travel experience. Peter has done an incredible job and he and Eva were warm and welcoming. The fires were always lit for us when we came home and before we got up. Attention to detail great. Definitely a unique experience. Highly recommended..
Peter is an incredibly interesting man. Maybe one of the best story tellers I have ever heard. I enjoyed hearing his passion for his work and excitement for the future.
Now about the castle: We pulled up to it and there was a massive mural covering an entire wall of it. This definitely took away from the "castle" experience as it was being used as a political statement. It is Peters property to do with but I would be lying if I said it did not take away from the experience.
My wife and I were looking for an authentic castle experience and we did find it in some areas most definitely. However, there were a couple of things that definitely made us second guess our stay.
I have nothing but good things to say about how accommodating Peter is and is truly a wonderful host.
However, our with our overall experience I would not say I would recommend this as a must stop.
We greatly enjoyed a 2 night stay with Pete and his castle. I was a bit concerned about the stairs at first but quickly got used to them. It was very clear the love Pete has for his special home. He was a great host. The castle is warm and very interesting. Very comfortable and roomy. My only suggestion would be that a shower would be a good idea. Although the underfloor bath was quirky, we would have preferred a shower to be available. However we knew when we booked that there was only the bath and therefore have no complaints. Good luck with everything Pete! I really hope you can keep your dream alive.
Our night in Pete's castle was amazing! He was a great host. He left us alone when we wanted to be, but when we wanted to hear about the work he had done on this gorgeous castle he was incredibly informative. A must if you plan to stay near Galway.
Because we came in a different route than the instructions we got a bit lost but Peter graciously came and met us and guided us to the castle. When we arrived we were given a guided tour and shown to the room(s). Well, what can you say about staying in a medieval castle. The atmosphere was out of this world! Peter's many years of tireless work restoring the castle are very evident. Hes an amazing craftsman! We also enjoyed our conversations with Peter and left wishing we could have stayed longer. Be sure to book early for an unforgettable experience in Ireland!
Staying at Pete's place was an absolute dream. We are so grateful for the experience and his hospitality. The place is just as described--authentic, clean and quirky. And just as great was the company. We spent the evening chatting and hearing Pete's stories about renovating the castle. It was so interesting and inspiring, and truly one of the coolest nights of our lives. Many thanks for giving us something so unforgettable.
About the Host, Peter
I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
