A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
Eva made us feel very welcome by showing us the castle and litting up a fire for us. The castle was even more impressing than we had expected and Peter told us about his work on it, which was really interesting and impressing. We had a wonderful time, not at least when we woke up in the morning, went down to the living room and the fire was already lit up. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience
Great time staying with Peter and Eva! Everything was perfect and I got the relaxing, homey, historic experience that I was looking for. Walking in the trees next to the house, trying to shoot with a bow and arrows, and taking a hot bath was just a few of my favorite things. So glad I was able to cook and stay in for the evening and I stayed super warm all evening. You have to stay here! As a couple its romantic and as a solo person its so comfy. Peter and Eva are just the best most interesting folks!
Don't sell yourself short, book as many days here as you can! When I think about my dreamy trip to Ireland, Peter's place will stand in the foreground of my memories as the charming, delightful old ruin where I had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of eating and sleeping in a real castle. There is the additional experience of discovering the incredibly funky and artistic way he's brought the space to life. You could easily spend a whole day just hanging out there. I felt an incredible sense of attention to detail and that this delightful couple chooses to host because they love to share their space with others, not just for money. Staying here was an awesome experience, and I can't wait to come back someday. I would especially recommend this home for artists, hippies, and anyone seeking a quirky getaway. Peter is really knowledgeable about castles and there are tons of castle-themed books if you want to find out more about the subject while you're there and can really see and feel everything! For me, the best part was that Peter is clearly passionate about his work, and it is inspiring to live inside of what feels like a fulfilled life-long dream.
I cannot say enough great things about our stay in Peter's castle! Our only regret was that we could not stay longer. The castle itself is amazing and pictures can't capture what a cool space you have during your stay!
Peter is welcoming and an amazing host. He offered to carry our bags if we needed help when we arrived, he started our fire in the mornings before we were up, he had the fridge stocked with food for breakfast and he took time to tell us all about the castle and all of the work he did to fix it up.
We are already telling everyone back home to make this one of their stops if they ever visit Ireland. Such a wonderful experience!
We had an amazing time with Peter and Eva! The castle is exactly what you would expect and the hospitality made us feel like royalty. The fires were always lit based on our schedule and they accommodated all our requests. The grounds were beautiful, the views were breathtaking, the occasional music was delightful. We were extra late checking in (GPS got us lost along the way) and Peter was genuinely concerned about us. It really made us feel like friends.
We had the most amazing and magical time at Caher Castle with Peter and Eva. Just an absolutely lovely weekend escape! The pictures don't do the castle justice - it's even better than pictured. We arrived in the dark by car but it was still easy to find. Peter greeted us upon arrival, carried our bags up the winding staircase, already had a fire lit and gave us the lay of the land. He had the kitchen fully stocked as well. Both Peter and his partner Eva were a pure delight and just as charming as the castle that they have lovingly restored. We stayed for two nights with full plans to go into Galway and potentially drive parts of the coast. We threw all those plans out the window when we woke up the first morning in the castle. It was so cosy and such a unique experience that we stayed there for the duration - enjoying the nearby animals, the creekside tyre swing and the VAST collection of movies while sitting by the fire. We'll remember this experience for the rest of our lives!
I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
