A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
Peter is an amazing host, neither me or my other half could drive and he offered to give us a lift to the Castel right in our first messages here on Airbnb. He is very friendly and talkative, I'm still amazed by all his hard work to bring this Caher back to life and make it this amazing place where we stayed.
Everything looks exactly as in the photos and I'm very glad I had the opportunity to stay there.
I definitely recommend this place and would definitely visit again.
Thank you Peter and Eva for beings such amazing hosts! Tiago.
Peter and Eva were the most wonderful hosts! The castle speaks for itself and is absolutely amazing! It is very much Peter's love and passion, other than Eva that is, and you can sense that very quickly! My boyfriend and I had an absolutely charming time in this beautiful place. Peter and Eva were also so helpful with reccomendations and directions and anything you could have asked for. Very much exceeded my expectations and would recommend to anyone for a special weekend away!
Arrived at Peter's castle with my girlfriend and he immediately made us feel welcome. The place is very cozy and like some other reviews said the pictures don't do it justice. We had a wonderful time, slept great, and were kept nice and warm by the fire. We also woke up to a nice fire in the morning that Peter prepared. It would have been nice to stay longer but we could only do one night. Peter was generous and made some suggestions for us in terms of traveling to our next destination. Very nice overall experience.
We loved our night at Peter's castle! It was an amazing and unique experience, and Peter and Eva were incredibly friendly, showing us around the castle and telling us some of its history. The space is even more comfortable than it appears in photos, and we had a wonderful evening and an even better sleep. We feel incredibly lucky to have gotten to stay here.
Peter was a very good host very interesting man and knows a lot about history, listing is actually much better than in the pictures, and castle is beautiful and brings you back in the past, we had an amazing night and I will definitely go back!!
Our stay at Peter's Castle was truly unique and memorable. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The castle and accommodation is different than anything else you'll come across, due to Peter's creative touch. Peter is a fantastic host. Very patient, open and welcoming. We loved the time with you Peter, and our time in the castle, thank you. We will remember this unique experience & highly recommend it to others with a sense of adventure
Awesome location and awesome hosts!
We had a lovely time with Pete and Eva. I wish I had you closer to go there every month :)
I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
