Description

The space

A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.

This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.

Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room, kitchen , bath and your master bedroom

Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.

The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.

Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.

What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.

This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.

You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)

I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.

Guest access

full sole use of the top two floors , which includes ,bedroom with two double beds one being in the mezzanine ,the living room, kitchen, bath , and toilet and access to the parapet

Interaction with guests

We like to be here to welcome guests
So on or before the day you arrive if you could give us an idea of around what time you are expecting to arrive, so we can organise our day accordingly and be here to welcome you

Getting around

Buses or train from Galway to Craughwell just let us know how ye will be arriving and at what time your bus or train is arriving in Craughwell and we can arrange to collect you from Craughwell and bring you to the castle

Other things to note

Now we do have wifi but its limited so
Not really good for streaming or Netflix

House Rules
No parties or events
Check in is anytime after 3PM

Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. Now this is not a hotel or a prison and we do have cobwebs and a little dust so if you are expecting a pristine five star hotel then go to one , This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.

It is hard to say anything that hasn't already been said. This place is just as advertised and reviewed by so many others. Definitely worth every penny. One recommendation... if you are traveling south after staying here get Peter's hand drawn map through the Burren. It is an experience that you will not want to miss.

Probably the most romantic Air B&B I have ever visited. It is the place you have dreamed about. This is more than just a room. It's a trip up a stone, spiral staircase to a medieval wonderland. And that bath....

When you first book the castle you already know you are in for a treat, what we got was so much more as Pete and his family shared the story behind the restoration in what has to be one of the best examples of creative genius. Honoured to have stayed there

Pete's Castle is truly amazing! It looks grand and imposing from the outside, but feels cozy and warm on the inside. Pete gave us helpful advice and directions for our explorations of the surrounding area. It was a great experience. Thanks Pete et Eva!

I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
