About this listing

The space

A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.

This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.

Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room, kitchen , bath and your master bedroom

Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.

The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.

Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.

What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.

This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.

You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)

I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.

Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. Now this is not a hotel or a prison and we do have cobwebs and a little dust so if you are expecting a pristine five star hotel then go to one , This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
We like to make guests aware coming with young children that the castle is not a child friendly place ie
Unforgiving spiral stone stairs, unprotected hot stoves , no child locks on doors and numerous other hazards inside and out for the very young
Now if you feel that you can enjoy your stay without being stressed worrying about your children then why not
Also five people can be accommodated but it on the couch for one person

Must climb stairs

One more item on the "bucket list" was checked last night. The loving restoration and attention to detail gave us a magical experience we will always remember. We could have listened to Peter all night. We admired his artistry evidenced in various media including woodwork and stone masonry. We were surrounded with treasures created by Peter or left by previous guests. Peter's library (both books and DVD) seemed to explore every pursuit imaginable. Thank you Peter and Eva for enriching our lives.

This was a fantastic, stupendous, unforgettable experience. Pete and Eva are warm and welcoming, generous and kind, and they go far above and beyond the norm for Airbnb hosts in making sure guests are comfortable and happy. I cannot praise them or the castle highly enough! The castle is incredible.

My husband has always wanted to stay in a castle and we were excited to experience Pete's Castle. It was everything we'd hoped for and more. Pete and Eva are wonderful hosts, ready to offer enlightenment on the history of the castle, the renovation, the ongoing upkeep, history of the area, recommendations of off the beaten path places to visit, and so much more. Our teens loved exploring the place and experiencing the grounds. Highly recommended.

Stay here! If you are reading reviews debating whether or not to stay, look no further! This place is fantastic! It really is a castle - with indoor plumbing that works better than most B&Bs we've stayed at during our trip across Ireland Our only regret is that we did not stay another night! According to my Fitbit (that tracks my sleep) this was the best night of sleep I had the whole trip. It was comfy, cosy, relaxing etc. Peter and Eva had even left some breakfast items in the kitchen for our use. It was lovely to make our own breakfast and sit and relax in a castle!!! Peter and Eva are also so sweet, kind, and helpful. I wish we had more time to chat with them. So - my advice to you fearless reader - stay at least two nights, if not more! :)

Peter User ProfilePeter is a superhost.

I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
