A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
What a great experience!! This was the first time I booked through airbnb, and absolutely loved the fact we stayed with friendly company! Peter and Eva were amazing, but it was also nice to be able to spend time with their two teenage sons! Eric got to ride a dirt bike, I got to go on a roof of a castle! But better yet, it was wonderful to compare stories, photos, and "life" experiences with these fabulous people of a variety of cultures! Highly recommended!
Staying at Peter's Castle is an experience on its own. It's worth the visit to Galway to take Peter up on his offer to stay in his authentically renovated castle from the 1400s. Both Eva and Peter are lovely people, and we enjoyed their boys as well. The directions were perfectly easy to follow and the views from and of the castle are quintessentially Irish. The hosts are charming and the stories they both tell are unforgettably unique. Oh, to have such a life! I appreciated the tub experience after Peter came in to fuel the fire in the morning (Thanks!!). I also enjoyed having a spot of tea in front of their old-fashioned stove. There were no ghosts to haunt us during our night's stay, so everything turned out fantastically well. I thoroughly recommend this experience to the intrepid traveler. Thanks again!
It was everything we'd hoped and more. Peter and Eva were wonderful hosts who made us feel right at home. We really enjoyed the opportunity to cook in the castle after a lot of non-homemade meals in our travels. This would be a great base to explore Galway or the Cliffs of Moher!
Every girl needs to be a princess in her castle, at Peters we both got that!! Peter and Eva were wonderful hosts, very friendly and the history of the castle was fascinating. Well worth treating ourselves. Thanks for everything! :)
The castle was great and Peter and Eva were such gracious hosts. They made us feel right at home. We had a wonderful time!
A once-in-a-lifetime stay! Stone steps, thick walls, gorgeous doors, beautiful beams... this is the place for anyone who has passed a castle or tower and dreamt of the romance of living there.
The tower is absolutely gorgeous; painstakingly restored and lovingly decorated. It was such an incredible experience to walk into the highest room, lit by candle- and fire-light, and know that we got to sleep there...in a castle! In the sitting room, we had access to a warm and wonderful old stove, a full kitchen, and an absolutely beautiful - and unique! - bathroom.
In addition to the inherent romance and comfort of the place, we adored getting to know Peter, Eva, and the boys. Although we were there only one night, our conversation was such that we now feel like old friends! These are great people - warm and friendly and absolutely interesting!
A truly memorable stay - it was a real experience to spend a night living in a castle. We loved hearing about how Peter and his family have been renovating the castle over the years, we left feeling inspired to find our own run down castle to restore (one day hey!)
Staying at Peter's castle is truly a memorable experience. On top of his beautiful castle, Peter and his family were very accommodating. We felt more like we were and staying with friends than as guests. Highly recommended!!
My boyfriend and I spent a night in Peter's castle as part of our week-long trip in Ireland and it was a trip highlight! Peter and Ava welcomed us from a somewhat chilly and misty day with hot tea and great conversation. The guest room at the top of the castle feels very private and we enjoyed taking in the views from the roof. One of the best parts of staying in the castle was talking with Peter about his work on the castle. He is a very interesting and engaging host and obviously loves what he does a great deal. We had a rental car so we drove in to Craughwell for dinner at Raferty's pub which was tasty and close by, though a kitchen and cooking supplies were available at the castle had we wanted to cook in.
Once we returned for the night we chatted with Peter and his boys for a few minutes but then they went downstairs leaving us the top two levels of the castle to ourselves. With the woodstoves and creative bathtub in the living room floor we had a cozy and enjoyable evening. We also got to carve our names into one of the castle stones which was really neat. In the morning the weather was so beautiful and we took a stroll around the garden and enjoyed the beautiful flowers nearby. Peter, Ava and his two boys were gracious hosts and helped us with anything we needed.
I would recommend Peter's castle to anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind AirBnB (I mean how often do you get to stay in a 600-year-old castle?!) with lovely attentive hosts. Thanks for a great stay Peter!
It was perfect! Perfect place, perfect instalations, perfect view, perfect hosts! We got engaged in this magical Castle, in front of the fireplace! Amazing and unforgettable!
Defenitly worth a visit! Peter and Eva were lovely! They lighted candles everywhere for us! Beautiful!
We hope to come back soon! ;)
Miss it already!
