A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
We LOVED LOVED LOVED this place! A great castle, a great family to meet and a wonderful experience to end our journey. The castle is everything we thought it would be, the winding staircase, the brick walls and lots of history. Great hosts, they let us explore the castle and allowed us to use whatever we wanted. The fire place in our room, the candles everywhere and the swing were something to make this experience one to remember. Thank you Peter! We even got to carve our names on stones that will be used in the castle ones one day! We will for sure return here and recommend the castle and its hosts 100%.
First off, you're staying in a castle... wow! The accommodations were breathtaking, from the fireplace in the master bedroom at the top floor, to the candle-lit bath; carving your name in a castle stone to practicing archery. However, the true magic of this B&B lies with Peter and Eva. Their laid back, easy-going attitude makes you feel at home immediately and they ensure you have everything you could possibly need. Peter and Eva were excellent hosts. Our only regret is that we only stayed one night!!
Love first, money second.
Our stay at the castle was amazing. Peter and Eva greeted us right when we got there and settled us in and explained how everything worked. The castle and its area is an amazing place to explore and Peter made the whole experience even better by telling us the history of the castle and how he came about it. The rooms were nicely set up and the bedroom was perfectly set so you woke up to a lovely morning light. You can also go up to the outside top of the castle and enjoy the amazing view both in the morning and at night where you can see the stars.
Breakfast was also provided for us before we left and since we walked to castle (although is was 2 miles it was a nice walk so it didn't feel that long!) Peter and Eva dropped us off at the bus station. So not only did they host us in the castle but they made our experience in Ireland amazing and we hope to go back one day!
Hi Peter and Eva, Thank you for a memorable visit. It was definitely one the highlights of our vacationin Ireland. Regards Didi and Jens.
This is an awesome place to stay, and Peter and his family are very welcoming. Definitely recommended!
Peter and his family were lovely. So much care and work and love went into maintaining the castle. Staying there was an awesome priveledge and experience I highly recommend. Awesome!
If you have never stood atop a castle before, stay here. What an amazingly recaptured treasure of history, hand by hand, stone by stone. And you won't find more hospitable hosts than Pete and Eva who will immediately make this your "castle away from home." Big smiles welcomed me, even after I got myself lost on backroads for hours. The sleeping chamber (like the rest of the castle) has been painstakingly rebuilt and is both an adventure and oasis in the (website hidden)te is full of wonderful tales and if the weather is lousy it is easy to curl up round the main room's fire or play a game of pool, or if better weather, survey his limestone projects or shoot the bow and arrow. After staying with Eva and Pete, they have become family. I would happily return and hope to soon! A wonderful stay.
A very authentic and unique experience with Peter, his family and his castle. He is the real deal and is quite a character, funny, interesting and loves to talk. He has done an amazing job restoring the castle and making it cozy and comfortable inside, with the fireplace and the decor. The outside of the castle is a bit overwhelming with stuff (mostly limestone),the surroundings area is of farm pastures in the beautiful country side of rural Galway. We had to get directions from the local gas station, and passed it due to it being on the driver side and tall hedge lined road. Having a sign out front would help a lot. We got there in the late afternoon and was greeted by Eva and shown around. We went to the local pub to eat and when we came back Peter and his sons greeted us as well. We chatted with them for quite awhile in the living room of the castle. The boys stay in their room and we had the other two levels for the night. The stairs are straight up and very narrow so you can't bring a big suitcase with you upstairs. The bedroom was lovely, lots of candles, but the futon is very hard and only one sheet and a duvet ( ask for two if you get hot like me) We slept fairly well except for the smoky air coming from an outside chimney. Overall it was a very cool experience, but very rustic. Go to meet Peter and his lovely family, whom we wish well in their future endevors . See what can happen when someone wants something so badly, they make it happen through talent, passion, love, perseverance and strong will power and probably a bit if stubbornness.
Peter was an amazing host! I traveled with my friend Kristin and we really enjoyed spending time in his cool castle with his great family. He went out of our way to make sure we had a memorable stay, shared great stories and even offered to start the fire in our room before we went to sleep. I would highly recommend a stay at Peter's castle. Its one you will always remember!
We enjoyed our stay in the castle. Peter really made us feel at home from the time we arrived till our departure. He has worked very hard at restoring the castle and it shows.
