About this listing

The space

A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.

This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.

Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room, kitchen , bath and your master bedroom

Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.

The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.

Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.

What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.

This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.

You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)

I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.

Please respect the castle. It's a national monument so we can't have anyone taking artifacts. Also, please try to leave your bedroom before 1pm. We'll take care of the rest. Now this is not a hotel or a prison and we do have cobwebs and a little dust so if you are expecting a pristine five star hotel then go to one , This is our family home, so please be respectful of that, but apart from that I think you'll have an amazing experience here.
We like to make guests aware coming with young children that the castle is not a child friendly place ie
Unforgiving spiral stone stairs, unprotected hot stoves , no child locks on doors and numerous other hazards inside and out for the very young
Now if you feel that you can enjoy your stay without being stressed worrying about your children then why not
Also five people can be accommodated but it on the couch for one person

Hands down the highlight place for our trip throughout Ireland! We were welcome so graciously and treated to a wonderful tour and history of the castle. The bedroom suite was comfortable and spacious and the kitchen/sitting area was a great way to relax after a long day driving. Would highly recommend to anyone

What an amazing and memorable time we had, in the most unique accommodation we've ever stayed in! Peter and Eva are very kind, interesting and helpful hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. The castle that Peter has worked so tirelessly on is a true work of art. If you are thinking of booking this castle, do not hesitate! It will be a wonderful experience. Thank you, Pete, for sharing your castle and your story with us. It was a highlight of our two weeks in Ireland.

We spent a magical night in this castle with our three kids en route from Dublin to Connemara. Peter and Eva couldn't have been more welcoming, and shared their passion for the restoration of this exceptional building with us. We all loved it and wouldn't hesitate to return!

Peter User ProfilePeter is a superhost.

I am an eccentric stonemason, father, and proud castle owner. I used to be a clothing designer, but turned from designing cloth to cutting stone. I now work on castles all over Ireland and live with my French girlfriend in the castle.
