A beautiful, original medieval castle experience can be yours for a weekend, a week, or even longer. You'll be staying in the master bedroom, the highest room in the castle.
This castle has been restored to its original state by using traditional materials, and also by using cutting edge technology. We used traditional local stone, limestone, as well as oak beams, to make the castle as traditional as possible, but it also has modern conveniences, such as solar water heating. The castle was built sometime in the 1400's but was refurbished in the last decade. It is comprised of a master bedroom upstairs, with access to the turret, a living room and dining room, two guest bedrooms, and some storage rooms. I'm Peter, your host, and I spent the last ten years refining and refurbishing the castle - the pictures can attest to how well that has worked out. Two room in the castle are still under construction - the storage room downstairs.
Remember, this is a castle that is over 600 years old. That means it's not perfect. Castles were never designed with bathrooms and showers, so we've improvised. You'll have to come downstairs to have a bath which is located in the living room - this is the quirkiest part of the castle. (see pictures of the in-floor bath) You have full private access to the living room/bath and your master bedroom, so don't worry, as we live in the "Petit Maison" downstairs when guests are here. However, we will be up in the kitchen in order to prepare your breakfast, and make a fire, etc.
Castles are bult with solid stone, so there is a huge fireplace with a cooker to keep the place warm.
The castle has lots of quirks, its a great and fun place to stay the night.
Galway City is a 25 minute drive from the castle which is a very beautiful city. The castle is around a 20 minute drive from Galway Airport, a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport and Dublin is two hours away.
What to expect: lots of winding staircases, a castle that has been lovingly restored, but there are some cobwebs, and it gives you the real Irish castle experience. It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle. There are lots of sheep and cows in the nearby fields - but lots of peace and quiet.
This is a very unique place to stay. There's nothing like it around, where you can say that you stayed in an actual castle. It's not a tourist attraction (like Blarney Castle) and it's not pristine like a hotel, but you'll have a great time visiting.
You'll need a car. The castle is about two miles from the nearest public transport. (Craughwell has both train and buses running regular schedules)
I can help with anything like lighting a fire or answering any of your questions.
We were pleasantly surprised with Peter's castle. We had not really known what to expect, but this was the perfect way to end our visit to Ireland! Peter even lit a fire and candles in our bedroom on the top floor of the castle! Very romantic! Know that there are 65 steps up to the bedroom! Someone with physical limitations could not stay here, unfortunately. Peter will happily share stories with you about the castle. I am in awe at the work he has done to restore this treasure. If you have the chance to stay here, do not miss this!
I stayed in the tower and had a lovely time. Peter, Eve and the boys are wonderfull people and it was a great experience. Everything in the tower is perfectly done with love to details and taste. The kittchen, the bathtube and toillets are lovely exemples how you can turn space into inginous.
I could use the kittchen and all what was in the fridge to cook diner what we all shared together. It was great to listen to Peters stories and he is an wunderfull artist and real craftsman with a warm, interessing, intelligent and openminded caracter.
Morning sun on the bed gave me a warm and lovely wakeup.
It is a place to come back and one night is much to short. Thanks for all and specialty the visiting tips!
Truly a memorable experience. Peter is a big part of the magic of the castle, and has restored it beautifully. He provided a warm and genuine welcome and we quickly felt at ease to make ourselves at home. This was a real retreat, so restoring to the soul, and a welcome change from all the tourist traps.
In case you are wondering like we were, it is possible to take a cab from Craughwell to the castle, but it's best to book it in advance. Craughwell is a small village, but there is a train station there. Note all the Craughwell dining options close their kitchens around 7pm, so plan around this if you are eating out. We definitely recommend bringing some food with you to enjoy in the castle.
We had a great time with Peter! He made us feel welcome, not to mention staying in a castle is the opportunity of a lifetime!
Truly amazing. We feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to stay in the castle. Once in a lifetime. Peter and Eva are wonderful hosts and we truly enjoyed talking with them. This was an experience I am sure we will be talking about for many years to come. Tip: the local pub stops serving food around 7:30pm but there is a fast food restaurant and grocery open later.
Great stay with very friendly people! Spending the night in an old tower was a fantastic experience, very romantic though. Everything is selfmade, everything is clean. Want to come again
Our stay in the castle was definitely a great experience! We enjoyed talking to Pete and Eva about the history of the castle and about each other's traveling adventures. Very nice couple. The castle is quite bigger than we expected and very cosy. We recommend staying here for a unique experience.
Peter's castle began as a beautiful, romantic vision across the fields and ended up being the fulfillment of our dreams. The accommodations were cozy and comfortable with every amenity we needed. The location was perfect -set in the country providing beautiful walks and a 5K run, while still being extremely well situated for hopping on the road that took us to Galway in minutes. Peter and his family took a personal interest in our care. One of our party came down ill and Peter saw to it that she had the medicine and peaceful rest that she needed. Peter went out of his way to arrange an incredible cross country horseback ride as a birthday present for us. We couldn't have been more pleased with our visit. We highly recommend Peter's Castle to anyone wanting a warm home base while visiting Galway.
This was absolutely the best place I've ever stayed. Peter, Eva & Ri'on were wonderful hosts. They made us feel so welcomed. I wish we could have stayed longer. If I'm ever back in Ireland, their castle is where I'll stay!!
Such an amazing experience! We stayed here for two nights during our honeymoon and it was perfect. The bath in the floor was so cool and the bedroom with the fireplace and all the candles lot was very romantic. Peter and Eva were wonderful hosts and made sure we had everything we needed. Definitely go to rafertys bar, the staff there are wonderful and the food was really good! Thanks again!
